Who are you picking on the mens, womens, doubles sides?

A couple of milestones are up:

Rafa would become the only man tennis history to win the French Open 5 consective times.

Fereder could become the 6th man to win a career grand slam. Has never won at Roland Garros.

Sharipova is back and a win would give her a career grand slam.

Will the knee injuries stop Serena's quest?

Will we see an All Williams' Women's Final?

    What do you think?

Lots of milestones that could happen here, however ...

Rafa should win the French, no question at all. I'd like to see Federer or Murray break through (I've never liked Novak and his constant DRAMA), but unless Rafa is hurt, he won't lose this title. At least, the US men are winning matches this year in Paris!

The women's side is completely wide open ... Safina is the hottest player on tour right now, but she seems to be afflicted with Russian Head Trauma at the Grand Slams. Her win over Venus on Rome's clay gives me some faith that she could beat a Williams at a Slam ... on clay. Marata's draw is completely open until the quarterfinals, at the very least.

Venus is my sentimental fave, but her draw is very tough. Safarova, Vesnina, and Szavay are all competant clay court players. If she can navigate through this section of the draw, she has a solid chance. The bottom section of her quarter is wide open ... Petrova aside.

The third quarter (Jankovic-Dementieva) ... pretty open, IMO. I'd love Dokic to do something here, but her draw is tough and Sprem will probably oust her in the 1st round.

Serena's draw is brutal too. I want to think that she will win the French, but her knee injury is worrisome and her draw is as tough as Venus'. Zakopalova beat her in Spain a few weeks ago, Vaidisova (when on her game ... which seems to be rare) can cause problems, Kuz and Schnyder are wicked smart on clay if she gets to the quarters, etc.

    Roland Garros ... WOO HOO!

i'm going to have to go with Fed for the men's title

Women a bit more complicated. I do expect to see Safin in the final even if she doesn't win

I don't expect an all Williams final. They are not terribly good on this surface

It's so damn tough to bet against Rafa here. I'll take him and Serena to win.

No... there won't be an all-williams final...
Venus' footwork on clay is horrible...
I'm expecting Safina... and maybe Kuznetsova in the final..

I'm so happy Sharapova is back!!!

And i'm hoping roger can win it

i wish Roger will win this, but i'm afraid Rafa will prevail..

on the women's side. this is harder to predict. there won't be an all Williams final. I guess it is Safina's turn to win a grand slam. But it is hard to pick a favorite.

Serena really gutted out the match against Zakopalova, although she has had some really scratchy early round matches in Paris over the past few years. The thing that confuses me about Serena is that she completely attacks her opponents on other surfaces, but she can be incredibly passive on the clay. Granted, she's dealing with injuries and a lack of preparation this year, however ... in each of her losses, she failed to attack the ball. Serena, think of this as red grass!

Glad that Wozniak beat Niculescu for all of the Canucks on the board, she was down 1-3, 30-40 (her serve) in the 3rd set, yet managed to come back to win the match 6-3. Canucks need love too!

Dokic managed to beat Sprem in 3 sets, *happy dance*.

Blake and Fish lost in the 1st round AGAIN on clay. *bangs head against wall* Poor matches against relatively weak opponents. At least Roddick has won a match this year!

I'd like to see Rafa win a 5th straight French title before Roger completes a career slam. A few more years of humility and humbleness will do him some good. I have no doubt he will eventually surpass Sampras for most grand slam titles, but I'm not in any hurry for him to do so. With him beating Nadal a few weeks ago in Spain, commentators are already dubbing him favoured to win this year, but he's not necessarily a shoo-in to make it to the final. There are plenty of players who have beaten him in recent years, and clay is definitely not his best surface. A healthy Rafa will win...

Being Canadian, we don't really have any top players who could possibly win it, although Wozniak has been playing really well and making a name for herself lately. So I'd be happy to see either of our American cousins, the Williams sisters win it. Sentimentally...Venus, because she has never won a French. Serena...just because she rocks...

Glad to see Maria back playing, though it's a tall order to expect her to win. She isn't yet match tough, and I really hope she has fixed that suspect serve of hers...

Sad to see Mauresmo out in the first round, AGAIN. I wonder how many years she's going to continue to play...

The tennis headline in my local paper on Tuesday was "How does a guy with 55 aces lose in three sets?" That was asked after Lleyton Hewitt beat the guy and he answered "I don't know".

I know. He got outplayed. icon_biggrin.gif

    Rafa & Roger final

Women's final hmmm I doubt if it will be Venus vs. Serena final neither are playing great tennis. I could be wrong.

I want Sarfina to win her first Slam. So she can shut up the naysayers regarding her ranking!

All the Americans are out except Roddick and a guy Ive never heard of-Robert Kendrick...

Ok, I will go on record

    Who I want to win:
    Men-Rafa
    Women-Venus

Doubles and Mixed Doubles later and who I think will win later as well. More study.

    What a HUGE day!

Rafa lost! Soderling played a monster match against him a few years ago at Wimbledon, but on clay ... WHAT THE HECK?!?!?!? Kudos to Robin and now, the draw is WIDE open for Federer. *knock on wood* I know that there is going to be an asterisk next to Roger if he wins this title, but ... meh, he earned it!

Azarenka outsed Ivanovic rather handily. Ana has been off of her game for awhile ... another headcase who hasn't been able to handle the pressure.

The Williams sisters lost in doubles to Petrova-Mattek ... *gasp*. Clay isn't their surface, but it's still surprising.

The more that I read about the match, it's even more surprising since Nadal DECIMATED Soderling on clay 1 and 0 a few weeks ago in Rome. The biggest difference between the match in Rome and the match in Paris is that Rafa didn't much damage on the Soderling serve, although Robin served much better in Paris. Bottom line, HUGE surprise for Rafa in Paris.

Now that I saw Nadal lose, Im, hoping for a Murray vs Federer championship. I love both and as much as i want Murray to win a slam, I rather see Fed take Roland Garros this year!!!

As for the Womens, Safina vs Serena will be an awesome final. Im going to take a risk and shoot for Safina to take home the tittle!

Well, both my picks are out and it has come to pass that the King of French Open tennis has been dethroned. On any given day, any given player can be beaten. I saw the match when it was 1 set all and in the 3rd set. I couldn't really believe what I was seeing, but to the Swede's credit, he looked unstoppable. And he showed class by leaving the court first so that the crowd could appreciate Nadal.

Venus is also out and the Williams sisters are also out in women's doubles. Andy and Serena are the lone Americans still in it. But with Nadal's departure, I am going out on a limb and pick Murray. The sportscasters all say the departure of Nadal helps Federer primarily. I think it helps everyone else and Murray, I think, has a great shot at taking it all. And my dark horse, Fernando Verdasco, is out now.

I'm gonna go with Serena on the women's side and I would love to see a Williams vs Sharapova final, if possible.

Defending champs out before the quarters... that's shocking...
I really want fedz to finally take this title, he deserves it.

As for the women... No one is playing better than Safina... But hopefully Azarenka can take her out.

And how's Sharapova for you! Quarters baby! woo! She's such a fighter even if her matches were quite ugly lol.
