Fellow gardners...need your advice. It seems this year ants are EVERYWHERE on our bleeding property!! We have some acreage. Five are developed/landscaped and the remaining 15 are woods.
Everywhere I turn....there are ants. Big black ones, big red ones, little brown ones, even ants so tiny that I didn't think it possible!!! BLOODY ANTS EVERYWHERE!!!! icon_confused.gif

There have not been any in the house, but they are on sidewalks, the 3 patios and 3 decks, and the garages. What can I do?
I would rather not kill them. Is there a natural deterent? I called pest control and they wanted to spray posion.
I had heard somewhere that cinnamon works. Is this true?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Keith

I like ants. icon_sad.gif I had lots of ant farms (well... ant farm experiments anyway... ) growing up.

Why do you have to kill them? They help keep actual pests from your plants. Unless you have leafcutter ants or those aphid-herding ants. In which case, they're definitely bad for your plants.

Try annoying them. Pour water on their nests (If you know where they are) like every day or something. They'll be too busy rebuilding their tunnels to be out much. And sooner or later part of the colony will want to relocate and bring the rest of the colony with them, and you better hope it's not inside the house. It's really quite impossible to avoid killing some if not all of them. It'd actually be more merciful to just buy those granule pesticide 'baits' and just kill them quickly rather than 'waterboarding' them to submission.

No, no. I DON'T want to kill them. That's my point.
    But thanks for the input.

I hear ants don't like spicy stuff. Sprinkle some chili flakes/powder around the perimeter of your garage, house, etc.

wisegeek has a good article about it

http://www.wisegeek.com/how-can-i-keep-ants-out-of-my-house.htm Ants will crawl away from cinnamon, mint, red chili powder, and black pepper. All of them can be sprinkled on countertops or cupboards, as they're not poisonous and highly effective. Planting mint and cloves in windowsills or outdoor gardens around the home will also help keep ants out of your house. Bay leaves, especially when dipped into mint mouthwash and placed around the food pantry, are another helpful option.

Creating a ring of Vaseline or chalk around windows and doors also helps, as ants will not cross lines draw with any of these products. While this may not help you get rid of the ants already present in your home, it will certainly discourage other ones to join the invasion. Baby powder is another great ant repellent. Sprinkling some on doors will keep ants out of your house.

Ants also hate vinegar. For an easy solution, just mix equal parts of vinegar and water and then sprinkle on counters and other food storage and preparation areas. If there are no small children or pets in the house, you can also use glass cleaner to spray areas in other rooms outside of the kitchen.

Thanks for the advice you bloody arsehole. At least you are consistently an idiot. The gardner/landscaper wants to kill them. I would like to divert them.

How's the sex in public going for you degenerate? I hear you are heading up to Fire Island. Been there many times. There are many areas there that you will fit right into. icon_wink.gif

    Wow....

Anywho.... try planting peonies at a distance from your garden. Ants flock to those things, it should keep them preoccupied and out of your way, you'll just have some pretty, ant-covered flowers.

Honestly ants have never really bothered me much. I've always heard if you have ants, you probably don't have termites (since they are natural enemies).
I did notice an ant hill built on the edge of my annual area.. like the day after I planted some Liliums and some Zinnia seeds. I just left em. They aren't a problem to me.

However I did have "Carpenter ants" at home (where I grew up). That was a little bit on an issue. We were always having issues like that. I remember my Dad having to call out the pest control folks because some bees were trying to get into our house from the outside. It was ridiculous...

Can't give you much input on how to get rid of them.
I would assume sprays, but you said you didn't want to go that route.

Mistic_man was just adding some black humour, Musclequest.

Do you have Peonies planted anywhere? They attract ants with the sticky coating on the Peony buds. Mom planted Peonies far from the house and it drew them away.

Magus_iii provided a good link and advice. You can put vinegar in a plant sprayer which makes application easier, so frequent use is not labor intensive.

(but you may get a hankering for fish and chips!)

No, there was no humour involved.

But thanks about the Peonies. There would need to be a whole field of them to make these ants happy! LOL

That's rich coming from you. You caught me? You are so full of it. You are the one who bragged about having sex in public like the degenerate you are. Not me. Now you deny it. So you were either lying then, or you are lying now. Make up your mind.

As for you trying to "make a funny?" Why would you think it would be funny? Last time you and I argued I actually tried to make peace with you. But you proved yourself to be the lewd mean spirted degenerate that I have come to loath.
You started this one you bloody dolt. So we can either go back and forth or leave each other alone. The choice is yours. But seeing how you like to be the star of the show, I'm sure you'll be attempting to make yourself appear better by your usual feckless nonsense and vulgarity.

The guys on here have got it almost right. And since we are both in Virginia, I can tell you what to do.

The ants you are concerned with come in two types: sweet-loving and grease-loving. One likes sweet sugary food; the other likes food with a high fat content.

You can test for whichever you have by putting a small sample of sugar water and a sample bit of peanut butter and see which the ants to go to feed.

If they are sweet-loving ants, use a bait of sugar water with boric acid dissolved in it. The sugar with lure them; the boric acid will mess up their basic PH digestive tracts and kill them. It will take several days for this to work. But that is a good thing. Because the scout ants will fill up on the sugar water boric acid solution and take it back to the nest, feed it to the others and that will kill the whole nest...queen included. A good brand of bait for these is Terro Ant traps http://www.terro.com/products.php?product=liquid_ant_bait

For grease-loving ants, buy those little plastic traps that have poison-laced peanut butter bait. You can find this kind of bait everywhere.

But dont confuse ordinary ants with the Red Velvet Ant, aka Cow Killer. This is really a wingless wasp and will sting the bejesus out of you ... http://entomology.uark.edu/museum/cowkil.html .. but these are solitary and you wont see a swarm or trail of them.
