    From BBC News

US abortion doctor is shot dead

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8076253.stm

"George Tiller had been demonised by some anti-abortionists
Prominent abortion doctor George Tiller has been shot dead at his church in Wichita, Kansas, city officials say.
The 67-year-old doctor was killed just after 1000 local time (1500 GMT) on Sunday morning at the Reformation Lutheran Church.
Dr Tiller one of the few US doctors who perform late-term abortions, had been demonised by some abortion opponents.
His clinic has often been the site of demonstrations, and he was shot and wounded by an assailant 16 years ago.
    _45849269_007418754-1.jpg_45849383_007418789-1.jpg

The shooting happened on Sunday morning
Police and city officials are quoted as saying Dr Tiller was shot in the lobby of the church.
They say the attacker, a white man, then fled in a car.
The shooting comes two weeks after President Barack Obama made a major speech on abortion at one of the main Catholic universities in the US.
Correspondents say the president is attempting to defuse the abortion issue - a highly emotive subject in US public life - by arguing that while it should remain legal, the government should do all it can to limit the number of unwanted pregnancies.
But members of the anti-abortion movement have been angered by the president's reversal of restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research and for family-planning groups which carry out or facilitate abortions outside the US."

As American right-wing extremist come to terms with their loss of power in Washington, I really hope they won't be continuing to resort to this type of violence. They're no different from terrorist in other countries who claim what they do is their mission from God. How do you try to reason with murderers when they are proud of what they do?

It makes me concerned for American LGBT activists, because these are the same people fighting against same sex marriage.
    Just a horrific act.

aurevoir saidHave you ever been attacked/harassed because of the sticker, or any other displays on your car?

I have only had a couple of notes put under my window shield wipers criticizing them very mildly. But I have had lots of positive comments and chuckles over them all.

I refer to my stickers as "proselytizing ...one stop light at a time." icon_lol.gif

Onward Christian Soldiers ... 'cept didn't nobody tell these dolts there's the Sixth commandment that might have a problem with what they're doin'

But let's not confuse them with anything truthful
Here is a link to an interview that was done before Paul Hill was killed by lethal injection for killing a Doctor who was standing at his kitchen window
I will not post the video on here because it is reprehensible
These evil men ... and that is the only word I can use because they are looking to this man as a martyr for a cause instead of the cowardly snivelling murderer he actually is
We hear from these people the loudest when Islam has members doing heinous things ... but when the American public is subjected to their terrorism no one says a word
    Welcome to the American Taliban

I read this this afternoon and felt sick to my stomach. Please, donate some money to Planned Parenthood.

When anti-abortion dickwads damage property, disrupt services, and murder doctors it puts that much more of a strain on an organization that is often the only one giving STI screenings, safe sex education and outreach, and famly planning services to communities. And they get almost no money from the government for these vital services.

A bit about the work he did
LA TimesDr. George R. Tiller specializes in terminating late-term pregnancies after the fetus has been diagnosed with a birth defect: a deformed heart, missing kidneys, Down's syndrome, anencephaly.

He calls his work a "reproductive ministry," and he offers his patients many of the same services as the hospice. Tiller encourages parents to hold, dress and photograph their aborted children, whom he delivers stillborn but intact. His staff takes ink-prints of tiny feet and hands; he brings in a chaplain for baptisms. Letters from grateful patients line the clinic's walls.

Sometimes the best way to get your point across is with humor....kinda like a Trojan horse...the idea gets in before they can close their minds ... icon_lol.gif

To be fair to conservatives, one crazy is not a reflection on all of them. Sure there are extremists who do awful things like this, but the vast majority of conservatives aren't seeking to inflict a wound on someone, and they do not condone such a thing. It's like judging liberals because of those extremist environmentalist who plant firebombs in people's car and houses. Wrong is wrong regardless of your political spectrum stance, and I believe most people are human enough to disagree with another without wanting to hurt them.

What a touching story about the things Doctor Tiller the Baby Killer does with the late-term babies he removes and kills... icon_rolleyes.gif

I have a feeling that if (more of a matter of "when") scientists find a "gay gene" or find something in our DNA or developed brain that makes us who we are (or, as unborn babies, who we will become), a lot of the people here who support abortion for so-called "compassionate" reasons will change their tune. Can you imagine how many mothers (or couples) would choose to have their babies aborted in this country if science had a test showing the baby would eventually be gay? What an awful and horrible thought. One I am sure none of the abortion supporters in this forum would find acceptable.

    You SEE .....

THAT isn't reported in our "national" media (meaning news broadcasts)
This man wasn't a raving lunatic with a bloody scapel in his hand
He was a Doctor who was trying to help his patients and for that he was murdered in cold blood

It's their incendiary rhetoric that inspires acts like these. Do right-wingers get to wash their hands of the acts committed at their encouragement? Their fingers may not have been on the trigger, but their lips were whispering in the ear. There is such a charge as incitement to commit a crime.

Really until more is known about the shooter no judgment should be made about what side he's on for all we know he could've shot him becuase of a very personal reason.

I'm surprised the thing was quoted from the "BBC News"....

We all heard about it after it happened. The right had been after him for years... they had protests at Tiller's abortion clinic.. I've been by there many times. The idiot former right wing attorney general was trying get him.
I'm not surprised this happened... I find it appauling.. horrible..pathetic.

And to think it happened right here in my hometown.

You have yourself a logical quandary here.

Imagine, the "libs" typically don't care if their children are gay and would not be compelled to abort such a baby. The people who most would want to avoid gay children and would wish they could abort them would be the religious right wingers who would be forced to carry them full term according to their stated beliefs .. what torment that would be for them. I wonder if they would try to pray the baby away? Of course they would then have to wait until the child commits a homosexual act to stone him.

As sad as this is, I would be hesitant to call it a mobilization of an organized right wing plan when one lone, deranged man acts on his misguided religious fundamentalism.

From KSNW (our local NBC affiliate's website):

    Tiller family issues statement

    Last Update: 7:15 pm

Print Story | Share this Story

Dan Monnat and Lee Thompson, Dr. George Tiller’s attorneys, issued the following statement today at the request of Mrs. Jeanne Tiller, the Tiller’s four children and ten grandchildren:

"Today we mourn the loss of our husband, father and grandfather. Today’s event is an unspeakable tragedy for all of us and for George’s friends and patients. This is particularly heart wrenching because George was shot down in his house of worship, a place of peace.

We would like to express the family’s thanks for the many messages of sympathy from our friends and from all across the nation. We also want to thank the law enforcement officers who are investigating this crime.

Our loss is also a loss for the City of Wichita and women across America. George dedicated his life to providing women with high-quality heath care despite frequent threats and violence. We ask that he be remembered as a good husband, father and grandfather and a dedicated servant on behalf of the rights of women everywhere

There is also the First Amendment. It is not to be applied expediently.
