You don't bring your best game - you go home early.

What does the surface have to do with it?

Um...I don't mind playing on grass or a typical surface court...but on clay I'm all over the place. It totally changes your game. The ball bounces differently, you move differently, etc. Historically many American players have sucked on clay courts because we don't really have them here in the States. I've only seen clay tennis courts in random spots down south. There aren't any here in Cincinnati outside of the private clubs.

nadal was bought up and clay, yet he plays all surfaces well. fed does as well and so did borg

There's no excuse - if you are an elite athlete it's your job to learn to play all surfaces.

Yes, Nadal has typically rocked it out at the French Open. This year, not so much. And while I wouldn't dispute your point about elite athletes - it'd be like TO saying he can only play in the Texas heat but not the Boston snow - even the tv commentators belabor the whole "Americans on clay" point. I remember a few years ago listening to McEnroe talk about it while I was watching the FO on NBC.

    exactly!!!!!
we all have our off time- it is true.but i think it is more than this for american men . it isn't as if they only play on this surface once in their bloody lives. heck go to europe and train on this surface for months, if that's what's needed for you to be a contender.

i try to watch the matches with my tv on mute. commentators tend to say lots of crap that only spoil the matches for me. that americans on clay thing is a form of excuse to make the fact that they suck more palatable.
