    Now Is The Time!

Make sure to add this event to your calendar. Does anyone know of any good places to stay in DC?

I think that I might make my first trip to the East Coast this year....

Perfect place and time for a Real Jock meet as well. A meeting of the minds for equality!

I would prerfer a 4 or 5 star hotel (I need my sleep) next to where the march will be, which I'm guessing would be the mall. Any ideas? I have never been to the East Coast before.

Hmmm....I guess I also need to figure out how to make signs that will fit on a plane. Maybe I can have them printed and shipped to the hotel.

What is the weather like in October in DC? I hope it is not cold. I don't know how to do cold.

It's not clear to me that this is a done deal. Apparently, the National Parks Service has already reserved these dates for other organizations. Without that kind of permit, the March won't be able to happen.

If it does, you'll want to stay in Dupont Circle (the gay part of town). October in DC is nice. It can be anywhere from 50 - 70 degrees and, at times, windy.

Thanks for the information. I hope they confirm the date soon, I would really like to be a part of this. And some of my friends expressed interest as well. I even have (straight) neighbors that told me that they already have plans to be in DC for a government class that her daughter is taking and they want to march as well. I'm sure my gay neighbors will be interested as well. icon_smile.gif

To Christian73... what would be the point of staying in the gay area?
I don't mean to start a serious debate over this, but gay people are already for gay equality.

We need to place our marches/protests in areas where we DON'T have support, or where those we can convince are.

Then they shouldn't be meeting in DC. They should be marching in Arkansas or Oklahoma or southern California. The march will be here in DC for the benefit of the politicians from around the country, not for the benefit of DC citizens.

Two of DC's thirteen city council members are openly gay. The Council voted 12-1 to approve a measure to recognize same sex marriages from other states. They are also expected to approve a measure allowing same sex marriages in DC.

I believe Christian73 was just letting the OP know that there is a larger concentration of gay bars and clubs in the Dupont area. There are others in different parts of the city but Dupont has the widest variety. Its like someone from San Francisco suggesting visitors stay in the Castro.

Yeah. I was really pointing to accommodations where they would be at the epicenter of gay life in DC, though having been there for the '93 and 2000 marches - little activist that I am - it probably won't matter since the whole city will be gay.

Marked my calendar and it did not escape me that it is planned around National Coming Out day which is always October 11th. I wonder if the Real Jock gods would also come and be a part? A great big Real Jock banner with 100's of us marching behind it: Can't you just see it now?

We ought to co-op the Statue of Liberty as a gay symbol....like we did the word "gay." Then have a replica of the statue at the head of the parade.

Do these things actually do anything? So much money and energy and planning and we get 5 minutes on CNN. Would it not be cheaper to buy 5 minutes on CNN? Another Million Man March on Washington, D.C.? Wow. How unique and how boring. We are gay people. We are creative. Is another boring March on DC the best we can do? I am not saying we should not, but I think it will be pointless. It will be a boon to hotels and such.

We are gay people. We have the best and most creative minds available. Is another March on Washington really the best we can come up with? Can't we come up with something more original and creative?

What happened to all the old ActUp guys from the "80's and 90's? Those guys knew how to create a disturbance. Those guys knew how to disrupt. Those guys were cutting edge.

Any old ActUp guys around? Where did ya go?

I like the idea. Stand up and be counted! Do it for yourself if no one else! TOO MANY gay people spend their lives in a closet. It is time to stand up for yourselves. If we can stand for ourselves, who will?

I have been told that the dates have been confirmed and they have the permits to march for October 10-11.

So are people going to actually be marching for 2 days? How does that work? I have never been to one of these.

I would imagine the actual March would happen on the 11th since that is National Coming Out day. The 10th would most likely be for hotel check-in, meet-n-greet parties, line ups for the march (meaning we need to have a real jock contingent-I would love a group from every state carrying an RJ banner with the state flag, US flag and pride flags and if from out of the country, carry that country's flag as well). Let's stay up to date on this. October will be here before we know it!! I'm excited!icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

I'll be there marching in the Veteran's Contingent organized by Daniel Choi. All RJ Veterans should join with us!
