Guys be careful out there on the roads. Apparently, they don't give a rat's patootie about us.

This lady was driving under the influence of morphine and barbituates and didn't even wear her glasses. And she gets three years for killing two people!!

    Unbelievable.

    From the article...
Thomas struck and killed the men at S. 26th Street, minutes after leaving the West Colorado Avenue Safeway. Police said she had been shoplifting and banged into a man's car in the parking lot before driving off. The man followed her and saw her hit the bicyclists as she tried to turn left onto Westend Avenue -- without yielding to oncoming traffic -- in her 1986 Ford F-350. Police found her speech slurred and her eyes bloodshot, according to an arrest affidavit.

3 years for killing 2 men - how can that happen?

I'm more disturbed by some of the comments posted on the Gazette that blame the victims.

The email comments to this Colorado Springs story are interesting: about a third of them blame the bicyclists. Basically it's: "They know riding on the roads is a risk, so what did they expect? They took their chances, and they got run over. So what?"

About what I'd expect from Americans after 8 years of Republican brainwashing.

    This is tragic. icon_sad.gif

I see a lot of people in my city riding bikes, with no helmets or anything. And a lot of them ignore traffic signs and signals. Be carefully when you're out there guys. Safety, safety, safety.

Yeah I agree. You know I saw something else bothersome too. On a road where there was work going on a sign said "Hitting or Killing" a highway worker imposes a fine of up to $10,000.00

    Is that it?

I live only 4.5 miles from work, so it makes sense for me to commute via bike.

Quite frankly, the few times I have tried it, it scared the crap out of me. Skydiving was far less frightening.

Without that big metal extension egg crate to carry you around, you quickly realize how easily your yolk could be splattered all over the concrete.

A car is not a simple tool like a hammer or a letter opener; it is a freudian aquarium in which our vain Ego and impulsive Id are allowed to swim freely, while the moderating Superego is locked away in the trunk until we arrive at our destination.

I think one day neurologists will find some kind of similarity in brain activity between a human driver and a stampeding elephant.

The people in this story are just as dead as if the perpetrator had used a shotgun. Murder is murder, and it should be prosecuted as such.

I will just tell you what guys at work tell me, "you have no right to be on the road".
This is a mind set that kills.
Frankly, I think some of them are pissed off because I am not a 240lbs bag of shit like them.

This is disgusting, only three years for killing two cyclists because of failing to yield the right of way. Under the influence of powerful prescription drugs to boot. This woman should be locked up a lot longer than three years and she should never be allowed to own a motor vehicle and possess a drivers license. It is time to start enforcing the laws and compelling some of these pushy, irate motorists that they have to share the roads with bicyclists. It is also time to stop marking many surface arterial roads like they are limited access superhighways ex: eliminate all right hand turn lanes. Start narrowing travel lanes and putting in bike lanes on all major roads and at grade, surface arterials.
