Death Note is the best I've seen. Also try Neon Genesis Evangelion and Fullmetal Alchemist. Those would be my top three.

for starters, avoid english-dubbed anime like the plague. there are certain nuances when you hear anime in japanese that just do not translate into english. find a good fansubber group and watch their translations. subtitles are your friend.

    that being said:

naruto and it's continuance, naruto shippuuden are most certainly in my top picks. i love ninjas. i love this series. if i could, i would date it. the video series is based off of the manga paperback series, and so runs behind the storyline in the manga. a fansubber group by the name of dattebayo had been translating this work for years until naruto became licensed in the us a while ago, much to my personal dismay.

bleach is also a long-running series that i'm fond of, fairly over-the-top, but still entertaining. i've always wondered what the lives of death gods were like.

one piece is another long-running series that has a great narrative and an interesting dynamic between its main characters. who doesn't like pirates anyway?

denno coil, a circle of children was a limited series that my nephew got me hooked on. you don't really know what the hell is going on until the 3rd episode, but it just keeps on getting cooler after that; fairly surreal. these kids are just so technological nowadays.

ergo proxy is another limited series that borders on "art flick". the animation and mood were great, but i wasn't too impressed on how the series ended; of course this may be due to the fact that i might not have really understood what the hell was going on in the series. still, the mood was intriguing and radiohead did the ending credits score. you can't go wrong with radiohead.

the prince of tennis was a series that i didn't think i could ever get into, because i'm not a tennis fan and couldn't see how it could be interesting at all. i was wrong. it's actually pretty funny, and who knew you could have such interesting superpowers in a tennis match?

death note is one of the best written limited series i've ever seen, and addresses the ethics of an individual's absolute power over death, and the cat-and-mouse hunt that ensues between two brilliant strategists. DAMMIT! this series is good. i understand that this has also been made into a live-action movie, but i haven't seen it yet.

these are just a few off the top of my head. there are several more that i have archived away, but i haven't looked at them in a while. i'll get back to you when i do look at them. the only ones i still watch on a regular basis are naruto shippuuden, bleach, and one piece. i'm always on the lookout for new anime (and a way where i can add more hours to my day so i can watch them), so if you have any recommendations, send me a message.

    cheers.
    cogitor

I used to be really into anime but i progressively lost interest. Im now only mostly into cinematic animation like 'Ghost in the Shell, Mononoke-Hime, Vampire Hunter D, etc. With anime, things were becoming cliche - female characters with high-pitch voices and bright pink hair started giving me diabetic seizures. lol I like animation thats unique.

A lot of mainstream anime listed here, so I'll say Monster. And yes, I think it's better than Death Note. Or at least more mature.

    Bleach
Death Note is ok i download the whole series but it just drags out after awhile.
    Blood Plus is good
    Tokyo Majin
    Ikki Tousen

Naruto-(all time fav right now) def agree about the english dubs they aren't so good. I've see pretty much every episode and movie. shipuuden is far better, this site has all the shippuden episodes which is when they get older http://naruto.viz.com/. I also read the mangas at onemanga.com which is ahead of the series. They have a ton of other mangas including bleach

Those are just like the mainstream ones i could think of.. Def want to watch the japanese version as it's unedited

    Astro Boy!

Credited with inventing the aesthetic, he's the original and still one of the best.
