Why do gay men groom themselves in ways that they would find unattractive in other men?

Now I realize this is a big generalization but hear me out.

The latest "batch" of eye brow plucking, beard and chest hair coloring, shaved chest, etc threads and responses got me thinking.

Most guys seem to prefer men that are more "natural" in many grooming ways, but yet, they groom or over-groom themselves thinking that this is....more attractive?

    Doesn't make sense to me.

    Any thoughts here?

Eye brow plucking and chest hair coloring doesn't sound too palatable
But living in the modern world and esp in the dog eat gay dog world we live in gay men esp have to put their best foot forward and that usually means

    Working out in the gym
    wearing the right clothes
knowing what haircut works the best for you
and body maintenance which can be called manscaping in certain circles

Why do chubby bears want smooth twinks?
Why do younger men want older men?
Why does a man want a woman?

There is no rhyme or reason to what we find attractive and we all don't want to be the man we want to fuck.

You're assuming that guys are only attracted to their own "type".

It's the "natural" guys, they want someone to get dolled up and make an effort. They like that.

My parents taught me that being well-groomed was a gentleman's trait, not a gay one. I never did too much of it when I was younger, and in the Army, but to my dismay my older body has become much higher maintenance all around, especially in the area of body hair.

My goal in grooming is to look not overly groomed, and not draw attention to myself. It's when I would stop that I'd really stand out, looking unkempt and unruly, that grizzled old man look you see in homeless shelters. icon_razz.gif

some people choose to express themselves in ways that aren't necessarily calculated on attracting other men.

Wow to a few of the above posts. I can see a lot of respect in your sweet sentiments.

I don't see why the trend either, SF. I've always thought that you should strive to be the type of guy you want to be with one day.

If only it were that simple, ha ha...

Is it me or does anyone else picture Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs, whenever someone says "I'd f*ck me"?

lack of perception of what it means to be a real man
some guys maybe feel internally not conventionally masculine
so strive to perfect the external signs of masculinity be it muscles/beards/whatever. Trouble is the best of nature is
    imperfect.
