Well my US trip is getting closer and I'm down to 2 decisions as to destinations: Ft Lauderdale or Provincetown.

Looks like Fire Island is already on the list (Woo Hoo) but I still have a couple of days and I need to choose out of the two above destinations.

What I'm interested in is somewhere that has great bars, beaches and friendly atmosphere sop I can literally get up in the morning and go to a cafe and maybe chat with someone or read a paper and mingle maybe?

Nothing too pretentious at all just a relaxed environment that has a fun gay scene.

    Suggestions? Experiences?

UPDATE: Just realised I got the destinations wrong as Provincetown is in Cape Cod!!

Provincetown for sure. You get all the charm of Cape Cod, terrific seafood, great beaches, in particular the notorious gay beach and dunes at Herring Cove. You get the option of whale-watching cruises, as the waters off the Cape are a favorite feeding ground of several whale species. You get the experience of being in a town where gays and lesbians are the majority, maybe for the first and only time in your life. You get a pedestrian-friendly place where you won't need a car -- strolling up and down Commercial St. is a major entertainment. You get lots of gay nightlife. And you get something unique to P'town -- everybody stays in quaint little guesthouses, instead of anonymous hotels, so you meet the other guests who may be from anywhere in the world.
I couldn't imagine a better gay vacation spot. Check out the town's website, Provincetown.com, with links to events and accommodations.

P-town is cool but a little too comercial. Also MANY fat tourists and day trippers out to see gay people. If you go to the Cape go to Wellfleet instead. Much more sophistocated. Better restaurants and art galleries. Great swimming at the ponds.

Fire Island is nice. more "primitive".

Personally I like Ocean Grove NJ. Most old Victorians on East Coast. Nice beaches. Good restaurants especially in Asbury Park.

But there are so many places all long the Atlantic and LI Sound.

    Enjoy.

Please refresh my memory, had you previously discussed this in a thread and had some dates in mind? If you have specific dates that could make a difference with Cape Cod, because its good beach season doesn't go much past September. And the water is always somewhat chilly if you were thinking of swimming.

Fort Lauderdale is the better beach destination for most of the year, very warm water in the summer, plenty of gay clubs, bars & restaurants, but the area's very overdeveloped and crowded, the traffic awful (and you must have a car). With towering high-rises everywhere it has nothing like the quaint charm of Cape Cod, even considering the heavy tourist attraction of P-town.

Fort Lauderdale is a few hours drive from Key West (or via bus), another gay mecca (though becoming more straight), the Miami Beach art deco district is interesting to see, and if you have a few days, Orlando and the big theme parks like DisneyWorld are drivable, too.

The heat & humidity of July & August, even into September, can be difficult for some people not used to it. That's why the hotel rates go up during the winter months when it's more pleasant.

I am a big fan of Provincetown, especially around the July 4th holiday. It's a great good looking crowd, very friendly and lots to do between the beach, galleries, dining, T-Dance, partying, etc.

If you are looking to meet interesting people and traveling alone, you won't have a problem.

Its a very special place, totally gay friendly. I promise you won't regret visiting.

Quite possibly but not my own thread.

    Trip is dated for:
Arr LAX 30/7 4pm then off to Washington to drive on to Rehoboth for a week.

Back to NY on the 8th and off to Fire Island for the day on the 9th of August back on the Monday for shopping and Musical Mondays at Splash.

    Aug 11-13
A choice of San Francisco.... or Costa Rica, Bermuda, Colombia (Bogata!), Boston, Chicago, Provincetown (Gay Cape Cod), New Orleans, Fort Lauderdale, or St Maarten

I've been getting recommendations more for Provincetown and Fort Lauderdale mainly cause I'm after beach, eye candy and friendly atmosphere.

Aug 13 off to Vegas for a night then back to LA for 2 nights before heading home.

    Does that help?

Yes and no, my boyfriend will be with me so a bit of wandering around on my own is not out of the question especially since he's probably already been there. icon_smile.gif

If this was winter I would have said Ft Laud
For obvious reasons but since it's summer or warmer weather
I'll have to say Ptown is the best bet

SoFLA right now is getting very hot and spending any time at the beach or down by the pool isn't the most comfortable thing to do

Both places are very gay and there's plenty of fun to be had in either location but the weather and the temp should be the deciding factor here

Agreed. P'town in July is usually in the 70s and at night it can get cool enough for a sweatshirt. And don't forget the food -- lobster and wonderful New England clams.
For someone from overseas Ft. Lauderdale would seem nice but a little generic, just like any beach resort anywhere. P'town isn't generic, it's quirky and unique.
I love it and go every summer - I'll be there that week in fact.

Yes, a very good time for P-town, getting hot for South Florida. Of course it also means the FtL touristy areas are less crowded, the hotels at their cheapest and easiest to book, including the gay resorts & guest houses near the beach.

In one sense a tough call, but in another not really, because I don't think you'll go seriously wrong either way. It's more what kinds of attractions appeal most to you and your BF.

Since you'll be doing NYC, DC, Vegas & maybe SF, P-town might make for some lower-key balance & contrast. Mostly urban USA could get old, even with the beaches in FtL. I myself could lean to P-town under your circumstances, and you'll never see better weather there (if the fog holds off). BTW I've been to Splash, but not on Mondays. An off-night for a gay bar in most US cities, but good if they have a featured event you'd like.

In any case, if you should come to FtL shoot me an email. I can also advise on places to stay, things to see, etc. And if you don't do FtL this trip, there's always next.

Gotta go with everyone else.... P-TOWN!
I'd be there myself if I didn't have to work.
