    Thoughts? Comments?

I think its great. I know she will get a lot of slack for not really singing every note like it is the last note she will ever sing. Although I think the song fits perfectly into todays landscape.

I have to give it to her, even though there is a lack of powerful Mariah singing, her lyrics are sick.

    "You are a mom and pop, I'm a corporation. I'm a press conference, you're a conversation."

It's a very lackluster way to re-enter the scene again KNOWING that Whitney is coming back and dropping her album like within days of Mariah's. She doesn't challenge he voice at all on this song and lyrically it's pretty simple and I find it amusing that the lyrics are said to be aimed at Eminem, now THAT'S funny!
It's very typical RnB Mariah, but she needs another "We Belong Together" track as well as starting to venture in to more mature music and lyrics. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Mariah and I'll bump the HELL out of "Obsessed" and the album "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" however she is 39 and it's time to let the Amerie's and the younger up and coming chicks do the sexy and cutsey songs!

I love the new single. I wasn't as impressed with her last album but I'm hoping for a proper followup to Emancipation of Mimi. Of course her older stuff is amazing, but it's hard to compare the two. Her old stuff is classic pop, her newer stuff has more of a R&B flavor to it.

Good for her! Em has always been such a hater.
Sad thing is you know he's gonna slam her right back and be way rude about it. O well, he's a total crackhead anyway...

I know I'm in the minority, but ever since she started, Mariah's voice has always been like fingernails on a chalk board to me. Time hasn't changed that impression.

I'll always give Mariah her "props" as she is one of the few artists around that has ALWAYS written and produced most of her music. It's one thing to sing it, but when the artist is singing something that they put together that is a true artist to me.

It is hard to compare the new stuff with the old one! her first albums were great, from the 1st to the last track. After she divorced, she turned into this sexy diva.... I guess it is due to many young stars coming to the scene in the past few years.... Anyway, I don't think it would be possible to equal the success obtained with the Emancipation Album... it was definitely awesome! E=MC2 was good, but not enough. This new song sounds cool, but I expected more of her.... let's wait until the whole album is released and then, we will see if it is a good one. By the way, Whitney doesn't pose as a threat to Mimi... never will!

"Free your mind... the rest will follow."

Listen to someone else. Mariah Carey is mass-produced crap at this point. New shit= bad shit. There's fresh talent out there--- and people who write their own songs, by themselves. In America, we're trained to follow the top 40 like sheep.

    Blech.

    That makes absolutely no sense.

You are basically saying if you are not new and fresh then you are mass produced and not worth listenting to? Who cares whether its on the top 40 or not. I don't think anyone should be judged on past work. I am totally with a lot of guys who think early Mariah was amazing. I do think her new stuff is a complete 180, but there isn't anything wrong with that.

I am def excited to see what she has to offer us on the entire album.

Not totally in agreement w/ joe cool. When whitney Belts you hear an old school soul church background that a lot of new R&B artist don't posses! Mariah has a 7 octive range but as far as the soul.....just aint got it! However, I will say like me she's from Long Island new york so I got my grls back and she's THE SHIT!

i don't understand... is this the next single from the same album she just put out only like a year ago with "touch my body" on it, or is she ALREADY putting out yet another album? i couldn't understand most of what she was singing, and that damn t-pain slithery electronic voice effect is just about to kill me... ENOUGH with the t-pain inflected tildes/slurs/slips/blips/warbles...

Mariah does soul, r&b and hip hop equally well in my opinion. Maybe she doesn't get as deep / churchy as Aretha or Patti but range is what kills it. That whistle note is orgasmic. Her voice is very distinctive, with a unwavering quality to it. Her live work like Beyonce's is just as good or better than what she puts out from the studio.

I consider the Obsessed track a bit of an experiment / repeat of the recipe that made Migrate popular on the airwaves. Mariah can belt out a ballad with the best of them if she chooses to. The younger audiences, which she and Def Jam are targeting want something with some bump / pop to it.

Twenty years from now I'm sure we'll still be praising her vocal abilities even if she doesn't wear the same outifts anymore. As for Whitney, nothing but love for her, hope her comeback is successful.

There's plenty of room for talent out there. Despite the media beef between Whitney and Mariah, I doubt the career of either is headed for the toilet. Even older artists like Diana Ross, Chaka Khan and Anita Baker are still putting out albums with decent sales. Buyers are more discerning of quality vs quantity, or at least I like to think so. Then again... icon_smile.gif

You missed the point. I am saying that when Mariah came about years ago, she was something new. And she has a great voice still. But her music is mass-produced bullshit. Have you ever heard of say... Bach? or Radiohead? Listen to something artistically intelligent-- that's my point. Mariah Carey is another clone at this point... it's pop-culture, not music.
