THE ODD EVENING AT THE YMCA: Any "odd" stories you care to share?

Now let me say most of my workouts at the YMCA in Wichita are pretty
typical. People are friendly, I wave and nod to a few as a walk in, change in the locker room and head in to do my workout. You chat, briefly, with one or two during the workout, exchange comments and laugh with some others.. and go about your business. I exit via the locker room after a successful walk on the track.

But sometimes their are oddities.. a week ago Sunday, being ushered out after a false fire alarm went off..... and having a guy I didn't recognize come up and talk to me about the "interesting" conversation we had on line 2 years previously. I don't remember anything about it.

But last night was kind of weird to say the least. I was only there for a brief workout, but there was a series of things. First there was the lack of towels up front and the staff member who offered to bring me a towel when they had some clean... and his offer to wipe down the machines for me if I wanted it. I said, "what"? He doesn't even remotely seem gay. Then there was the older gentleman, wandering around the weight room, talking on his cell phone.. AND trying to work out on the machines...then wandering around and plopping down on a machine I wanted to use.. LOL and gabbing away.

As I went back into the locker room, there was a guy in there, standing in front of the mirror, totally naked, rubbing lotion on himself.... and he looked at me as I walked around him to head back to the bathroom. He was still doing that as others came in. I just thought it was odd behavior......
Finally I'm leaving and here comes a woman with a yellow lab puppy (who was SOOOO cute) walking down the hallway. Of course you had to stop and pet the little guy. What was he doing in the gym, I didn't think pets were allowed........

Well at least it isn't boring! Any you care to share?

scratchart saidHe was so casual about it it was hilarious. It was a position you fully expect to see someone in at work - propping up a leg while on a lengthy call. But the nudity and the low hangers made it surreal.

I can imagine. But a word in defense of those old guys who have a long history at the Y, from an earlier era I experienced for a brief time when younger myself, before the US Ys became "Family Centers" with female members.

We used to swim together in the nude, and nakedness meant nothing. It was a male prerogative to be naked in each other's company, and indeed, to be shy was ironically considered to be a queer sign. Real men didn't give male social nudity a second thought. We were taught to be totally casual & blasé about it, like the old guy you saw on the phone.

The only reason we wore swim suits and were modest was for the benefit of women. In their absence all need for clothing in private environments disappeared. We all showered naked together before swimming, so why would we need suits in the pool, if no women saw us? And need clothing in the locker room? We peed next to each other into broad open troughs, and even used toilets without stalls; where's the privacy in that?

Even in the Army barracks & gyms I knew decades ago, guys shaved at the sinks naked, and didn't bother with clothes until they were completely dry and ready to leave. Even a towel around the waist often wasn't used.

In that innocent age, it was simply assumed that all men were only sexually interested in women. The naked male body couldn't hold any titillating interest for other men. And as was often said to me: "Don't by shy; we all have the same equipment!" Shyness was judged a female trait, to which masculine men would never admit.

So I think it's possible that's where this guy was coming from, a different era now gone. I certainly wouldn't assume he was an exhibitionist, or some other kind of pervert or weirdo, just a product of his generation.

That was then, this is now. I find it disturbing when older guys sit around the locker room butt naked as if they are the only ones there. Put a towel on dammit! I wouldn't like it if it were younger guys either. Nothing against nakedness, but gyms have towels for a reason. Be naked in the shower, be naked while changing, but to just wonder around the locker room or sit around on chairs and benches naked is kind of tacky and a little gross. Cover up.
