Metatarsal injury - best care? experience?
Jun 23, 2009 11:03 PM GMT
Last week I was walking on some volcanic rocks in Hawaii when one of them broke underneath my step. My right leg/foot went forward. I fell down, sitting on my left foot, injuring the metatarsal (4-5th) region. It's been a few days now, and I think I may have a slight fracture(s), as evidenced by the slight swelling and soreness on the top of the foot, toward the toes. At night I prop it up to let the swelling go down.

Has anyone experienced this and how best to take care of my foot? What's your experience been? Or suggestions?

Ironically enough, contrary to my screen name, the ground was not quite solid. LOL

You need to see a doctor right away. If you don't, and there is a fracture, the bone starts calcify the injury and the abnormality may have to be fixed surgically.

As everyone before me said, you need to check with a physician.
Some metatarsal fractures are so minor that all that is needed is rest and immobilization with stiff- soled shoe. Others require casting. Badly displaced fractures may require surgical fixation.
