The Very Republican Governor of South Carolina Mark Sanford went missing for 5 days last week
No One knew where he was .... even the Lieutenant Governor

When he got back he made up a story Ummm ... I went hiking on the Appalachian Trial strange that his disappearance coincided with Naked Hiking Day

I love when republicans get caught up in their own hypocrisy

    Oh and BTW ....
Mark Sanford is very well known for wanting to refuse the Federal Stimulus money but guess where some of that money is to go >>>>>> some of that money was to FIX UP THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL
You cannot make this Sh*t Up icon_wink.gif

BREAKING NEWS: He now says that he made a trip to SOUTH AMERICA! icon_eek.gif He just ups and leaves and didn't even tell his wife! That's very selfish and irresponsible.

Oh, this story has WAY more interesting tid bits than a little known fake holiday. But, to go down this nude hiking trail with you.

Not only did the Lieutenant Governor not know, but his staff and security detail did not know (though they juggled conflicting stories all week). The most juicy, Perez-would-be-pleased nugget is that his wife and family did not know.

    Totally banging trannies in Bangkok.

Experienced hikers rarely go alone. Unless he needed some kind of serious emotional time-out, it's not wise to go solo, even on the well-marked Appalachian Trail.

And on Father's Day? Leaving his kids at home? Some Republican family values!

Now reported "sightings" of him at other locations are surfacing, like airports. Likely spurious, but this is what you encourage with irresponsible and inexplicable stunts like these. At the same time, where are sightings of him on the Trail?

It's actually fairly well-traveled this time of year with schools out, fueling speculation this is a cover story. You either stay at lodging along the way, or at tent campgrounds where you pay a fee. Either way it leaves a record of you being there.

While it is possible to strike off into the woods and camp alone, that's discouraged and even prohibited in some sections, because of unregulated campfires and numerous risks to the campers themselves. As someone who's hiked the Trail, this all sounds very fishy to me.

Seriously? I just made a post explaining why I thought his camping along the Trail was unlikely.

    POLITICO Breaking News:
    -----------------------------------------------------

Returning home, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford tells The State newspaper that he was in South America, not on the Appalachian Trail as his staff had said in official statements.

Sounds kind of odd to me.....

OMG, just heard a reporter on CNN news, who says the Governor admitted he really went to Buenes Aires, Argentina! This guy is nuts!

His new story is that he PLANNED to hike the trail, then changed his mind at the last minute, wanted to "do something exotic." Which did not include updating his staff of his changed plans, letting the Lt. Governor know he'd be out of state, or even telling his family at all!

Frankly, I think he was just running away from home. South Carolina needs to check their state treasury, dontcha think? LMAO!

He said he mostly "drove along the coast" to "clear his head" but wouldn't disclose to the reporter who questioned him where he had stayed in Argentina. He said he cut his trip short & returned home when he heard there was concern about his whereabouts.

Well, yeah! Since he's a serving Governor, and Commander-in-Chief of the South Carolina Army and Air National Guard, who can't act without his authority. And if he came back early, for how long was he planning to stay? Enough panic was caused by just 5 days.

This guy needs to go, but in a Republican state, I doubt there's the political will to remove him, like they did with Democrat Blagojevich in Illinois. Hell, down there, he might even get reelected.

I think we should get off the guys case. He's in a high pressure job and always in the public eye. He just wanted some time alone and were making something out of nothing.

Is anyone else totally getting Brokeback Mountain vibes from this? icon_lol.gif

Mark Sanford: You know I ain't queer.
Unknown Nekkid Hiker Dude: Me neither.

Oh and I googled to see if he actually deserves to be tarred and feathered. He does. He got this award once, when he pulled a gay tourism ad for SC:

That's partly true, and any Governor deserves a break after a period of continuous pressure & work. But THIS way? When you get the job, you get the responsibilities. If you don't want them 24/7, then don't take the job. It really is that simple.

Seems like other Governors manage well enough without having to fly down to Argentina secretly without telling anyone, or deputizing the Lt. Governor, and leaving their state in a panic. Sorry, but that dog don't hunt. icon_razz.gif

my only question: why did his stupid ass bother to come back? the lt. gov. would have been a decided improvement. sanford is not widely liked in south carolina - he was the lesser of two evils (the democrat running was just a republican with the wrong label).

Ya, that is the thing. Having your staff lie to the press for a week is just really bad government. Want to go to Argentina without the wife and kids? Great. Have a good ol' time. But being a gay-hating traditional-family-values guy it is bad form to not let your wife and kids know that you wont be there for father's day.

The real question that comes out of this: is there any potential GOP candidate for President in 2012 who doesn't have the PR skills of a teenager caught masturbating?

I do! "Oh, hi Mom! I was just rubbing in this lotion the doctor gave me for a rash I have down here. Can I have some privacy, please?"

Oh, wait... I'm not a Republican! Nevermind... icon_redface.gif

Thanks, but I wouldn't want to bring the time of day to the homophobic GOP on a tiny, fuel-efficient vehicle, or on anything else. icon_razz.gif

Even if he really went to Argentina - icon_rolleyes.gif - it likely wasn't for hiking. Wifey knows he's a homo and is staying mum to keep her life. Isn't Sullivan Island a rather pricey place to have a second home?
