clothes do make the man but if many are shirtless it is usually only for pics that will be seen on places like this...when guys go out in public they dress according to where they are going and if too a beach or just a drive then shirtless is great...do that myself and do not feel bad about it..

I have to say you look rather fine without. I can't imagine you with, I don't think I want to...

"Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence in society."
    --- Oscar Wilde.

Too bad Wilde never lived to see this site.

Clothes make the man? I call bullshit on that. Their actions and values do, surely.

No offense intended but I find your comment no less superficial then the shirtless guys who thinks what makes them a man is their physical appearance! what makes a man a man is his character and his own sense of values! demeaning someone for his looks is superficial and not sexy at all!

    The three primal needs are:
    1. Food.
    2. Shelter.
    3. Sex (to keep the species alive.)

Physical attraction is burned into our brains at the very most primal level.

    Entry level pysch.

Clothing is part of shelter, and in later years, through false belief systems, naked is taboo, and body is taboo, etc.

Fashion is marketing, and preying upon the conformance of humans, and their pack behavior. Some folks attach a higher value to clothing than others. I wasn't raised that way, but, some folks were / are.

Saying that appearance, and physical attraction doesn't matter is bullshit.

While other personality traits are important, and a, say, lack of integrity, will trump appearance, a true couple's relationship needs some level of physical attraction. Mental attraction sometimes overcomes that, I understand.

So an image on a website makes a man, shirtless or otherwise?

Personally, I like men with a bit more substance.

Get a grip! It's the Facebook profile that makes a man.

    ;-)

Haha...of course not. It's actually what the sensible guys above said.

Mad Men ad slogans tried to make the man . . . but far earlier and more primal methods win out . . . what is the Arrow Man's arrow?

I don't believe that "clothes make the man".
You can wrap a turd in gold leaf, but it's still a turd.

Yep, a fat ass, or a skinny, whiney, person is still what they are, no matter what the wrapper.

Most of the neatest folks I've met have had little in terms of material possession.

"Clothes make the man" was coined by the fashion industry to make folks feel insecure and to driving purchasing of stupid clothes, compensatory to that lack of self esteem.
