Spirited TV pitchman Billy Mays was found dead at his Tampa home earlier this morning, police said.
Mays, 50, lent his trademark booming voice to infomercials for products like OxiClean and Orange Glo.
His wife, Deborah Mays, found him at their home Sunday morning, the Associated Press reported. Tampa police said there were no signs of a break in or foul play.
An autopsy will be done by Monday afternoon to determine the cause of death.
"Although Billy lived a public life, we don't anticipate making any public statements over the next couple of days," Deborah Mays said in a statement. "Our family asks that you respect our privacy during these difficult times."
Mays, who got his start peddling products to passersby on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, has plugged Mighty Putty, the Ding King dent repair kit, and, most recently, the website ESPN360.com
"With every product you see me on TV with, I've turned down 100, 150 more," Mays told the News earlier this month, while in New York for a look alike contest. "I've been on TV for 11 years, and all I have is my good name."
"I compare myself to a big-league slugger, a quarterback, the doctor who delivers the baby," he said. "I'm not an inventor, but I'll take your product to the next level."

You can't be serious. All mentions I saw of him on gay sites were full of mockery and laughter. It was only gullible straight bubbas who bought any of the crap he was pitching. To associate him with gays is a distinct insult to us.

Good.... I could NEVER stand that yelling, whiny, in-your-face voice! Everytime he came on a commercial, I turned the channel....

Well, I certainly didn't want him dead, and his family must be devastated. But I did always mute the TV sound when his commercials ran, the most obnoxious there were, along with the Sham WOW guy. But that creep disappeared after beating up a prostitute or something, so for now the airwaves may be at peace.

While I respectfully sympathize with his family - I'm glad I'll never again have to hurry to find the remote - or run for the set - to turn this clown's horrible, insulting ads off. How he decided that any thinking person would go out an buy things after being hollered at - is beyond me. May he rest in peace - and thankfully - we will all now have peace as well.

Well, so did the Gotti Mafia crime family, the Osbornes, Kardasians, etc, I hardly find that a commendable accomplishment.

LOL. the point is they obviously had high enough ratings to make some pretty good money from selling advertisements during his show. so its not really about it being a commendable accomplishment.

my post was trying to point to the fact that even though a lot of you thought he was annoying, he made people money, and that's all that really matters. icon_biggrin.gif

Point. Continued exposure on US TV is based on what works and what sells. Which in turn is a frightening commentary on US consumers and TV viewers. As has been said before, you'll never go broke by underestimating the US public.
