I took the time yesterday to go to the Sedgwick County Zoo (Wichita's Zoo)
along with my bf who really enjoys that kind of thing.

Now let me say, if you haven't been to a really good Zoo, you are missing out. Wichita's zoo is way past most (for even larger cities). Will was comparing it with the Denver zoo, but thinks the Zoo here probably beats it out.

I don't like the whole "captivity" idea, but good zoo's make it more an "experience in the native habitat" and spend millions in quality surroundings, education, facilities. In the 3 years since he and I had gone to the zoo, they had finished the huge Gorilla exhibit (I was totally stunned.. it was like going back in the wilds of Asia or Africa), the new penguin
exhibit (which had received a myrid of positive remarks) and the new Slawson Tiger Exhibit.. which was amazing.. more because of the small details than some of the larger facilities.

I liked the "Guyana trading post" and lucked out seeing both a Gorilla and
the bears at close range..... and took some awesome pics.
The videos below are from Youtube.. are aren't the best.. certainly doesn't show that amazing efforts made, the waterfalls, landscaping, etc.

No doubt we will be regular members and "adopt a zoo buddy" as well.
What are your facilities like in your area???

I haven't been to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo (Syracuse) in a long time. About 5 or 6 years ago I was at the Toronto Zoo. That was pretty cool.

I haven't been to the zoo in ages. But I really wish they didn't close Lion Country Safari here. I remember going there for a class field trip back in grade school. It was pretty awesome.

The Manila Zoo, when I was around 7. Don't actually remember much of it. There are still pictures of me and my brother in front of elephants, giraffes, and whatnot though.

I think the giraffes and other animals were later released into a massive wildlife preserve in the Palawan island.

I've since been to private collections though. My favorite was from a local rancher here who had a collection of different species of pheasants.

The Buffalo Zoo is pretty awesome for a fading city. But, here is an awesome photo of a few of our lions.

I just think the snow, the vine covered wall, and the tire make it look like two lions scouring the urban wastes for homeless people to eat. Which is exactly what you would expect from Buffalo even though the facility is great.

Went to Omahas zoo last September on vacation. Kinda cheesy with the lack of animals in the viewing area. Felt bad for the big cats cause they make em take turns in the glass room and they are PISSED. Black Panther was worth the admission fee. Awesome animal. Gorrillas/silverbacks were frigging incredible. Most powerful looking creature I have ever seen in person. Not a fan of monkeys, etc but these changed my mind. They let you sit in these bubble windows so you can be "out there" with em. Would hate to come across one of those bad boys. They must get the good juice from Europe. Felt bad for them cause they look like they know where they are and always have this depressed look. Shoudnt cage animals that are somewhat intelligent. Rhinos were getting it on. haha.

I went to the National Zoo twice last year and it was enjoyable. It had been years since I had been there. While I did like it, nothing really blew me away.

But I believe in 2011 the Elephant Trails exhibit will be completed. That exhibit will definitely help boost the zoo's appeal.

I think I took over 200 hundred pictures.

Last summer to the Bronx zoo, which is rated as second best behind the San Diego zoo. You could already see the effects of the down turn in the economy, as none of the large cats were there. Great disappointment as this is always a popular draw.

Admittedly, I did go on the free day. hmmmm perhaps they hid them since it was free admittance that day icon_razz.gif

Aruba rattlesnake. She's much prettier in real life. The camera doesn't
capture the subtle variations of pastel pinks and grays through the glass
as well as the naked eye can.
