SUNGLASSES: What brand do you wear and how often?

With the summer rays bearing down, its a favored time to wear sunglasses.
I wear them frequently. Have several pairs of Maui Jim's... expensive but nice and I take care of them. Have some inexpensive glasses if I'm working outdoors and probably still have some Ray Bans someplace.

I have friends that buy expensive glasses with UV protection, some buy cheap ones since they get busted up or lost. What do you wear... whats the best ones this year?

I still wear my Foster Grants. I used to work at a sunglass shop and I was amazed at the amount of people who would drop any amount of money for the latest fad. Even working there, I still could not believe people would pay over $500 for a pair of sunglasses.

Well HK I am a Ray Bans guy. I have to wear small sunglasses....usually wire rimmed...pretty traditional. The big over sized frames don't work with me (I think that craze is over and not a moment too soon!). I use sunglasses primarily when driving or on the beach, but not walking around or playing tennis.

I tend to lose sunglasses pretty easily so I try not to invest too much and like you I keep some inexpensive pairs around.

I probably should be wearing them more being a Floridian..but I do not.

I dislike sunglasses. There's already enough bullshit to look through to get a clear picture of things. Sunglasses get in my way.

I have some Smiths and Oakleys. Mainly wear them if I am out in the sun. Since I live in Seattle, that translates into "rarely."
Jul 04, 2009 7:35 AM GMT
For Driving I have a nice pair of Armani's-they were a gift. For the beach anything decent with uva uvb protection, because I have a habit of losing, destroying or giving my sunglasses away. I had a nice pair of Revo's but I have no idea what happened to them?
Jul 04, 2009 7:39 AM GMT
I used to buy oakley and rayban but now I just buy the cheap ones...as long as they are polarized. Polarized lenses are great on the water and for driving, nothing beats their glare reduction. I wear them every-time I go outside in sunlight. When my eyes self-corrected to 20/20 my eye doc said to always wear sunglasses. Since I have light-colored blues eyes, she said they were more susceptible to sunlight and retina damage.

I have a pair of Ray Ban aviators. Never thought aviators would suit me, but they do.

Eye care is important to me; Ive had sunglasses since I was about 11. I find glare irritating so I wear mine even on overcast days.

If you lived in Southern California (or anywhere with this much sunlight), you would wear them.

I know they look douchey... but they really are a requirement.

I'm rockin Fossil sunglasses. Got them on clearance for $50. They look similar to military style pilot sunglasses. But they're pretty old now and the lenses are a little scratched up. I think my next pair of sunglasses will be Oakleys.

Ray Ban "Wayfarers" most times. I have a pair of Panama Jack el-cheapos that I wear knocking around the yard when I don't really know what I'm going to get into. Safety-rated glasses whenever I mow, or use power equip. Don't ever trust your eyes to Kmart-type glasses when you are using mowers, saws, leaf-blowers, etc!

BTW: I'm glad to see the large white-frame sunglasses have run their course.
A guy came up to me wearing those & flirting and I almost laughed in his face...those things look what that old lady that used to be in the Old Navy commercials would wear! LOL

I'm eventually going to be getting some prescription sunglasses because regular sunglasses are hard to wear with regular glasses (also the clip-on sunglasses look a little weird).

One thing I didn't know, people with normal store bought sunglasses, can go to an optical shop and get their sunglasses tested to see EXACTLY how well they hold up to UV rays.

From what the previous poster said, I'm chuckling a little bit because I actually like these frames below.

Or maybe frames like these:

I wear Mountain Equipment Co-Op Javelin Sunglasses.

At $32 dollars Canadian they are great and then I can buy different lenses that snap in and out for different conditions. I have clear, the smoke you see here and a rose color (pink) I use for cycling and low-light conditions. The lens sets are $15. I wear them anytime I'm outside the house -- so much so by BF asks me "Why are you wearing those, there's no sun?"
Just protecting my eyes all the time since they are UVA/UVB protection.

I have some random $30 pair that I stole from my dad that I wear whenever I'm out in the sun for a prolonged period of time. I think it's silly to spend more than that on a pair of sunglasses when you're just going to misplace them or sit on them anyway. Their cost doesn't determine how well they protect your eyes, and since eye protection is (or should be) the priority, why spend hundreds of dollars?

Speaking of sunglasses whore....

I have mostly Serengeti photochromic (lighten and darken according to light intensity) and polarized -- many different styles and lens colors and all superlative optics! I like the aviators, wraps, and some "Italian" styles. Great for general wear and comfort, outstanding for driving and outdoor recreation. Great glass/polycarbonate, good styling.

Oh, and a favorite, old pair of Porsche Design wire-framed aviators with exchangeable lens sets.

One or two Smith, Bolle' and Oakley, and some designer knock-offs from the mall kiosks 'cause they were cheap, pretty well made and allegedly UV filtered.

Here in the 7000' altitude and brilliant strong sun of northern New Mexico shining 300+ days a year - one needs sunglasses!

I have two pair of Louis Vuitton. Best sunglasses I have ever owned!!

The PM Cup is great for sports and playing with my dog at the park.
The one I wear all year round is the Evasion. It is the most comfortable pair of sunglasses made. You actually forget they are on.
They are a bit overpriced, but well worth it if you are outdoors often.

xuaerb saidI really like sunglasses. I have all kinds...cheap ones that I bought at Walgreen's and expensive ones that I still cannot believe that I bought, but I do favor the aviators and big ones as opposed to small frames.

I once came very close to buying a pair of Cartier, for $850, but I just kept thinking that 2/3 of the world lives on less than $2 a day and I just could not do it. No matter how good they felt and looked.

The truth is sunglasses set a visual tone that I think it hot, and I enjoy the different looks. But I tend to try and buy cheaper ones now

Oh good gosh man!!! Don't deprive yourself of pricey anything because of the unfortunates of this world. Wonderful sentiment, but whether you buy them or not, the poor of the world will still be poor. Buy whatever you want, then donate to some bloody charity.
A good pair of sunglasses makes the outdoors sooo much better. The one pair I have were a bit more then the Cartier. I didn't think twice about it after trying them on. Go buy those Cartiers!!

Keith

I will be the first to admit that I paid a lot for my sunglasses. Unfortunately, I had to as my glasses are perscription. So, since my insurance paid for part of the price, why not get a better frame. I consistently keep them in their case when not worn (a hard plastic case - but in the summer, I wear them regularly as my eyes are quite sensitive to super bright light),

However if I had better vision and didn't have to spend the money, I would not have as in most cases.

In any case, my current glasses are the ones below - Marc Jacobs MJ 015s....I opted for more of a black into smoke tint vs a blackish purple like the ones shown but you get the point...

i refuse to buy or wear anything based on brand or high price. i think it's rather silly. i buy $10-$20 sunglasses. when i get 'em, i look to see if they are uva/b, the visual field acuity, then lastly, appearance. usually small/medium lens with a sporty look. i honestly don't like the look of most $$$ sunglasses and i find that price for some pieces of plastic to be ostentatious.

if someone gave me a pair of $500 name brand sunglasses, i'd probably treat them them the same as a $10 pair.

I once bought a $300 pair of sunglasses at the airport in Atlanta. I sat them down next to me at the pay phone, stood up, turned around to get my suitcase, turn back around and gone. And that isn't even the most expensive thing I have lost in Atlanta.

There is a a real toss up for me depending on what I am doing and where I am. I have three pairs of sunglasses I wear for travel, dress, good, They are Nina Ricci, Giorgio Armani and Valentine

Nw if I am working ambulance I buy very cheep on because they get crushed, thrown, covered with who knows what, and I just cannot war them again. So, after having two pair of good sunglasses distroyed I have leaned to keep it cheep when running EMS

I wear sunglass all the time when the sun is out. I hate the way the sun makes my contacts feel in my eyes.
