OK well tomorrow is the 4th July so I thought that a favorite version of the Star Spangled Banner thread might be fun.

Don´t embed as the thread tends to collapse after about 10 of them and many of us can´t then read it.

I can't find the video. But Tyrese's adaptation was just plain wrong. And everyone ripped him a new one. I'm glad he learned his lesson. icon_lol.gif

    1. Whitney Houston in 1991 at the SUPERBOWL - It's just incomparable! She combines great singing and stellar delivery. She looks gorgeous and patriotic, and you can tell she's having the time of her life. What more could ask from a diva?

    2. TAKE 6 - The best group version (for my tastes). Exquisite harmony, faultless execution.

i just don't understand why they chose that difficult ass song as the the national anthem.

heck you need at least a freaking 3 octave set of pipes to be able to sing the freaking thing!!!!!!!!!!!

I never could stomach Whitney Houston's air raid siren style of singing, but I have to agree that her version of the national anthem is right up there at the top.

Reba McEntire does it proud, too.

The song--as written--covers an octave and a 5th. So, technically, one should be able to sing it with a range that wide. However, to do it justice, I think one needs at least a 2 octave range since the notes at either end of one's range aren't usually the best notes.

I've performed several times. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have to work it out in my head and at the piano before singing it. Now I'm sure some awesome singers could do it effortlessly. I'm not awesome icon_cry.gif.

Mariah Carey in 2001 or 2002 and I think it was at a NASCAR race. I can't remember the circumstances, but I was blown away and felt at the moment that it was better than Whitney Houston's 1991 Superbowl version.

I've always hated that song. Every time someone butchers it on TV, I get these psychotic flashbacks to my college band director screaming about the EXACTLY CORRECT WAY to play each note. I'd be very curious to hear the way they really used to sing it at the Anacreontic Society in London.

Esthetically, I really wish that we'd go with "America The Beautiful" instead. However morally, I seem to prefer a tavern tune to a hymn.

The trick is to start the song with one of the lowest notes you've got.

    Oh yes, yes, yes!

When female singers attempt it, the word "say," which is the lowest, is barely audible. They hit it 4 times and then they're gone--ascended into the heavens. LOL
