Rep. Patrick Murphy is the lead sponsor of this bill

    Quote:
As momentum builds toward an eventual repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law, Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA), the first Iraq veteran elected to Congress, has now assumed the lead in sponsoring the bill. "It is vital to our national security," Murphy said last week in his first interview since taking over the lead on the so-called Military Readiness Enhancement Act. "We have troops that are fighting in two wars ... and we need every qualified able-bodied individual who is able to serve."

The legislation, which has 150 co-sponsors in the House, would repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which Congress approved in September 1993 and bars the military from discriminating on the basis of a service member's sexual orientation. More than 13,000 military personnel have been discharged for being gay since the law was enacted.
From an email he sent out:

    Quote:
In less than an hour [10:00 AM], we will officially announce that I am taking over as the chief sponsor for The Military Readiness Enhancement Act -- the bill that will finally repeal the policy known as "Don't Ask,Don't Tell." I have been speaking out against for many years against "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" -- first as an ROTC cadet, then as a professor at West Point, and later as a candidate and a congressman. To now take the lead on such an important piece of legislation is an honor and a privilege beyond words.

This is going to be a busy day full of meetings and interviews. We'll even be launching a new website dedicated to this issue: LetThemServe.com. But before it all got started I wanted to thank you for giving me the opportunity to stand up and fight for the values we all believe in. I couldn't do this without you, and I'll never forget that.
It's now time to start writing your congressman and ask them to support this bill.

cosponsors on the bill to repeal DADT. If you don't see your congressman, send them an email asking and telling them why they should sponsor it.

It is a clever way to frame it. By having a veteran introduce it instead of one of the three openly gay members of congress (if we don't include that snake David Dreier) and making it about the military instead of gay rights it really deflates the bull shit talking points against it. Well done.

Oh, and my congressman is a co-sponsor, so there Meta :p

My rep is a co-sponsor. I am on a first name basis with his Gay Issues aide from calling him.. ... icon_lol.gif ... But even if your rep is a sponsor, it is good to contact him/her to voice your support. For example, my rep's aide was not aware of how offensive to my rep's constituents that brief that the DOJ filed was. It helps if they keep getting a reality check from their gay constituents.

And thank you metta8 for continually posting all this information! .. icon_biggrin.gif

Contacted my rep last night. Thanked him for supporting this bill, then urged him to pick up the ball on repealing DOMA.

Repeal of DADT is all good. But, how many plan on joining the military? I think that would be a good thread.

Oh yeah, already did my time.

It's not if I personally want to, but if members of our community (such as zsocerstar) want to.

Not a single rep from Nebraska is supporting this... I think it might be time to have a phone drive here in the cornhusker state.

    It says:

You are in Texas's 10th district and are represented by The Honorable Michael T. McCaul .

I don't really think he's all that honorable since he is not on the list.
