i just read some disappointing news. My fav superhero is going to be portrayed using..Ryan Reynolds..Further more the Green Lantern i grew up seeing and reading about was African American. Why couldn't Hollywood just stick to that image? To even make the role for a female would be better than giving it to mr Reynolds. As the current Green lantern has been black since 1971 and hes portrayed as black on the current Justice League on cartoon network. If your going to make a movie focusing on a hero millions of kids in this era/Century know of especially one that is known to be of a specific race..you make the movie using that knowledge to target the audience. Dont make it a character that only my grandfather would relate and know about. .Im sure there are countless unknown black actors out there that could have played the role and i might say much better than Reynolds as hes not that type of actor unless its going to be a comedy. Hes a comedian. Also by reading his response to a question i could tell he did not know a thing about Green Lantern. And yes he was shitty in Xmen. Just eye candy....If they could find an unknown actor for superman..why not go the same route for Green Lantern? It would def make the role more interesting to see a new ethnic face getting into the lime light...As a matter of fact there are a few black actors that could play the role.

I never was big into comic books like my brothers and even those days were long ago, but I dont remember Green Lantern being african-american. I dont remember any super heroes being african-american. Did they change him over the decades since the '50s?

The Green Lantern they are doing is Hal Jordan, the Silver Age reboot of the character. The original, Golden Age Green Lantern was Alan Scott, who is also white.

Guy Gardner was also a Green Lantern from Earth, also white. John Stewart, the African American you are talking about, was chosen when Guy was injured and in a coma. His status as a Green Lantern has fluctuated for years and he's currently one of the four Earth men serving in the Green Lantern Corps.

I agree....the Green Lantern, should be an African American to keep continuity in the franchise, from cartoon to the "big screen". I am not as negative about Mr. Reynolds, as you are, but he is not the best choice for this role....I would certainly appreciate any of the actors you showed and suggested. The Green Lantern would be a serious hottie with any of these actors! Very HANDSOME! ...BUT, I wouldn't kick Reynolds out of bed either....he deffinitely has the body for it! icon_cool.gif

Apparently there was never even a thought of casting an African American in the role.........too bad........

Ryan Reynolds cast as "Green Lantern"

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - After an intense months-long search, Warner Bros. has chosen Ryan Reynolds to play the title character in "Green Lantern," the studio's live-action movie based on the DC Comics hero. Reynolds and his representatives entered negotiations for the part Friday, after the studio held two rounds of screen tests for the actor, Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. Justin Timberlake also did a screen test.

I agree with you. And isn't Ryan Reynolds supposed to be Deadpool? I could have sworn that they were making his origin movie. But it doesn't matter because he is known as Deadpool.

And Ryan Reynolds is not that good an actor, Brandon, and you are saying that because he is hot. He is a step above Paul Walker. He is good-looking, but let's be real.

It would be nice to have a black Green Lantern. It sucks that Hollywood marginalizes the young black kids that are willing to pay money to see a comic book hero that looks like them.

The Green Lantern isn't actually one person. There was a series of Green Lanterns, the ring is the only continuity.

But yes, it does make sense that since the latest Green Lantern is black, he should be black.

Makes me think of the way they hollywoodized and whitewashed Avatar.

    P.S. I would've voted Lance Gross.

Hm really? icon_razz.gif I saw two such fakes. Thundercats was an obvious one. Zelda the movie was a more devious one.

Hm... yes that trailer totally looks fake. I saw a scene from The Fountain, a scene for The Mummy I think, and a several scenes from Fantastic Four.

The latest Green Lantern isn't black, he's white. The only used John Stewart in the Justice League cartoon because everyone else in the league was white and they wanted to show some diversity. The movie is the origin story of the first Green Lantern from Earth, and he's white.

Even if it weren't for the fact that most of the shots of the Green Lantern in the "trailer" weren't of Ryan Reynold, but Nathan Fillion (whom many of you are likely to remember from either Firefly or Desperate Housewives), there's the fact that IMDB's listing for Ryan Reynolds doesn't contain any mention of a Green Lantern movie. Given that they list information for "Announced" and "pre-production" films, as well as post-production and actually shown ones, a complete lack of an entry is a good indication that he's not in any movie where there would be trailers already.

Ahk. The Green Lantern were not exactly part of my usual comic fare as a kid. I've actually only encountered him once (more accurately - them, they were a bunch of men and women in green costumes with the green lantern sign and various weapons all glowing green and all with a ring, different races, different builds, I forgot where they appeared... probably an issue of Wonder Woman or Super Man) Explains why it's Reynolds then. And DC plots were worse than soap operas. LOL.

This is on the homepage of SYFY.com right now...

"A day after The Hollywood Reporter said that three actors were vying for the coveted title role in The Green Lantern, it reports that one has prevailed: Ryan Reynolds, whom Warner Brothers has settled on as its choice to play Hal Jordan. The film is being directed by Martin Campbell and produced by Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti.

Here's what the trade paper reported Friday night:

Reynolds and his camp entered negotiations for the part Friday, after the studio held two rounds of screen tests, along with actors Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. Justin Timberlake also did a screen test.
The studio had holding options on the actors, but, except for Reynolds, those expired Monday. Reynolds' option would have expired end of day Friday.

The trade paper goes on to observe that Reynolds will be the only one of the few actors to have played characters in both Marvel and DC films: He recently appeared as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and the character is in development for a spinoff movie. Fans of the Blade franchise also recall Reynolds role as Hannibal King.

Reynolds was also attached at one time to a Flash movie from writer/director David Goyer, but nothing ever came of that."

I don't really care if they make The Green Lantern African American or not, I just don't like Ryan Reynolds. He is good in comedies but he sucks in action flicks. I wish they use Bradley Cooper.

Like Timberoo has stated, depending on what "Green Lantern" this movie is about would make the claim.

The Green Lantern gets is power from the ring but there have been many. There is no "fail" in their pic if their story revolves around the other white ones. If there are sequels that follow the comic, then yes a black man would be best.

I have to agree that Ryan Reynolds would be a poor choice for Green Lantern. I heard he was in line for The Flash in a justice League movie which would be better fitting for his comedy skills.

As for GL myth........There are several Laterns who have protected the earth through out the characters history......But the original was white and more than likely they will go with the Hal Jordan character since that is who most people who a movie like this will be made for will I dentify with. He is also the current one for Earth in the comic book.

Damn.....I am such a geek. I need to get laid. icon_mad.gif

I think he's a great choice to play Hal Jordan for the origin movie. Hal was cocky - think Tom Cruise in Top Gun.

The two green lanterns I grew up with were Alan Scott (from reprints) and Hal Jordan. Maybe there can be a follow up Green Lantern Corps that features more of the Green Lanterns:
