Confessions of a Gym Fashionista

Okay, so we've all seen them. I'm talking about those guys at the gym who make working out seem like a fashion show. Although we might tell ourselves that the gym is just a place to sweat, or that it shouldn’t matter what we look like when we're really there to pump iron; we've all secretly found our eyes gazing over to the hot guy in the corner who makes a pair of colorful boardshorts and Sanuk's somehow seem gym-appropriate. Not everyone can carry it off either. A good sense of style comes from within; it's a reflection of self-confidence and courage.

Well, I've recently come to terms with the fact that I'm one of them. With an entire section of my closet devoted to workout gear, it's time I admit it... I'm a gym fashionista. The gym is my second home and since I like to look snazzy on the street and in the office, what's wrong with carrying that same sense of flair into the gym? Of course, like anything, one can get carried away. So I have to pull back now and then, remind myself that it's okay if my tank doesn't match perfectly with that yellow stripe in my shoes. But, at the end of the day, I'm just as passionate about my workouts as I am with how I look working out.

So I'm interested in hearing from the rest of you "gym fashionistas" out there. What are the latest trends you're seeing at your gym? What are the must-have gym accessories of the moment? Where do you shop for those eye-popping sneakers, shorts and tank tops?

    Fess up.

If what you wear at the gym mentally helps you exercise better, then more power to you.

But for me, it would interfere with my concentration if I had to think about that.

Reminds me of one time when I spent, I have no idea how long with an ex, looking for a pair of red running shoes that would go with his red shirt.

Of course he wanted it to match dry and wet.

Felt like giving him a really good slap.

I like the color yellow. My iPod happens to match the yellow trim on my Nike Free 3.0 running shoes just because I like buying things in/with yellow...not because of some obsessive need to match my clothes. It also doesn't help that I workout with some of my hold high school PE shirts that have yellow emblems on the front. >_>

I always wear black shorts, synthetic material.

Because if you wear cotton shorts that are anything other than black, your ass sweat can be pretty noticeable. Not very attractive. icon_lol.gif

I hadn't heard of lululemon before, but I checked them out online and their stuff looks great! Not the most inexpensive, but definitely smart-looking and practical designs. Thanks for the tip!!!

    Keep it simple!

Work-out pants, shorts, simple T-shirt or sweatshirt, and the shoes. Why the f*&k would anyone want to go around the gym flaunting labels, colors-n-patterns, etc., as if they were going out to a bar or club? Sure, looking nice and snazzy is great -- I'm onboard there. But at the gym where you're gonna get sweaty and wet from a solid work-out?? I get annoyed enough by the prostitute-looking women conversing more with men while holding up valuable machines than working-out, let alone seeing some dude prancing around like the clothes he wears is more valuable than his weekly paycheck. Thankfully, I go to the gym to work-out to gain results, not make some "Gurrrl *SNAP*, check me out!" statement.

Just make sure they're clean and washed.

You can always spot gay men at the gym cos their kit all matches down to the Nike swish.

I too Say I'm not a fashionista at the gym
but living here in Miami icon_cool.gif
You go to the gym in a plain pair of shorts
and a no name tee shirt you're gonna get looks .... and not for a good reason
For better or worse I've succumb to gay pressure once more icon_neutral.gif

Depends on the gym but, yeah, I've had that experience down there, too. Odd, considering what those queens choose to wear as workout gear, but I ignore them. If only they'd show me the same courtesy.

I tend to wear out my t-shirts and shorts fairly quickly, so why bother spending so much $ on them? I do spend a lot on UnderArmour compression shorts, but that's the exception ... nobody ever sees those.

I pretty much throw whatever I have clean on and go but I understand the reason why some want to look good while working out.

Here is what you do. SMile sweetly and say "you have to look good out of your kit before you look good IN it. (pause, wistful look of sadness and pity).... and you don´t".

If you can really work the wistful look and inflection of your voice then you don´t need to add "and you don´t" as it will be clear.

    Ask me any time.

Anything clean and black or navy is what i wear to the gym. And the look of serious determination to outdo myself from my last workout should do it.
For y'all label queens out there, i wear Hugo Boss (convenient for me since i work there and i get the employee discounts, hehe).

I like wearing cotton shirts, especially when I do my cardio, so that I have a feeling of accomplishment when it's drenched in sweat and I need to peel it off.

Since I'm going to the gym to workout and nothing more (not socialize, cruise, gawk, or strut) I wear one of two pairs of gym shorts (4-5 years old ) and one of 2 shirts (1-3 years old). One set on me, one set in the laundry. All are nondescript.

Personally, I don't really care what people think of my attire. I've no intention of drawing attention to myself since it's a distraction during a workout.

Granted there are guys that look fantastic at the gym, but they'd look good wearing a burlap-sack tunic. On the other hand, there are also guys that look ridiculous too and it's impossible to not notice them. Nevertheless, it's still irrelevant to me.
