Saskatchewan holds talks on 'Corner Gas' site

Updated Tue. Jul. 14 2009 5:56 PM ET

    The Canadian Press

REGINA -- The Saskatchewan government is wading into the discussion over the future of the set of the hit TV show "Corner Gas."

Tourism Minister Dustin Duncan says a meeting is to be held next Tuesday to talk about the potential development of the site in Rouleau, Sask. -- the town that stood in for the fictional community of Dog River.

Rouleau officials say the exterior set for the show's filling station is falling into disrepair [DISREPAIR, IT SAYS! DISREPAIR!!! OH THE IGNOMINI OF IT ALL] since production ended last fall and tourists are disgusted.

But the show's producers say the filling station was designed as a set, not as a tourist destination, and it would be expensive to renovate.

Duncan, who visited the "Corner Gas" set as a tourist, says there's a lot of interest in the site and pride in the show.

The minister says it's early, but he hopes a compromise can be reached that would satisfy the community, the production company and Tourism Saskatchewan.

Now that's crappy. They were able to do good by Gibson's Landing's restaurant Molly's Reach which is now, ta-dah, an actual and very busy restaurant.

Why not make it into a real gas station? I think they're planning on filming some more, whereas Molly's Reach would have been torn down as the series had ended completely.

Are there going to be no more 'Corner Gas' episodes?

We'll phone the Sask gov't tomorrow if you like, citing the BC experience. Anything else we should say? Or would an email be better?

I grew up in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, the town the show is based on. Brent was two grades ahead of me. I played keyboards at his comic book launch in the gym one year.

    I confess, I've never watched a full episode. icon_neutral.gif

I love the show, but it is over. I don't see that the production company has any obligation to do anything with the site unless it is becoming a danger. I am sure they would sell it to someone who wanted to spend the money to buy and renovate it, but why should they be expected to either give it away or maintain it themselves?

Philistine (when spelled correctly): a person who is lacking in or hostile or smugly indifferent to cultural values, intellectual pursuits, aesthetic refinement, etc., or is contentedly commonplace in ideas and tastes.

Rumours are that the producers of "Corner Gas" are looking to do a feature film version of the show.

They won't need the old gas station set, as the new gas station will be CGI.

They may do a total reboot using younger actors to replace the original cast.

OK here goes...What we're sending to Dustin Duncan - Ministry of Tourism etc

    minister.tpcs@gov.sk.ca

    To the Honourable Dustin Duncan
    Dear Sir,

On behalf of many avid fans, which include many in the US as well, we'd like to request the preserving of Corner Gas sets no longer required by the show. As an example, please explore the concept of Molly's Reach here in BC on the Sunshine Coast.
This restaurant set from the series 'The Beachcombers' was renovated into a real structure and now operates as a tourist attraction/actual restaurant and has been wildly successful over the years as it (the show) gained enormous numbers of Canadian and international fans that make a point of dining there when visiting BC.

"The series was filmed on location in Gibsons, British Columbia and surrounding area. The café featured in the show, Molly's Reach, still survives today and is a local attraction in Gibsons. Molly's Reach became, however, a café only after the series had ended — it was a private film set, not a restaurant, while the series was being shot. After the series was cancelled, the building sat vacant for a time, with its future uncertain. Eventually private investors converted it into a functioning restaurant, which thrives as a centrepiece of the community."

    from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beachcombers

In your case , a public/private partnership could accomplish the same success quite easily and make the town into a tourist destination; a good thing for the local economy!

Looking forward to your kind response,

    Doug ---------- and Bill -----------

We'll also call them on the phone (how quaintly 20th century, eh?) lol

LOL! Well, I (Doug) just got off the phone from them...spoke with Bob who's in the Minister's office. He was sufficiently enthused and when I told him of the show's US following etc he became more enthused. We talked at some length about Molly's Reach and it appears they've been doing some investigating of that already.

They have scheduled meetings with interested private parties and I suggested the gov't consider a private/public(gov't) venture with a tourism grant to offset costs in start-up.

He said he'd open our email and use it at meetings.

So there ya go Caslon, and we'll post any reply we get. You do realize that if this goes ahead they'll need paying customers at the cafe...which could mean a trip to Canada! icon_wink.gif

And the surveillence bush! ...the surveillence bush needs to be preserved ....it's the only vegetation around .... icon_lol.gif

The "surveillance bush" that Karen (Tara Spencer-Nairn) hides behind in her car in episode 1.1 "Ruby Reborn" doesn't actually exist, it was simply held up there by a crew member who was lying flat in the ditch."
