After some recent trolling etc on RJ it occurred to me that some people aren´t very good with dealing with beasties in the cyber jungle, so I decided to waste time writing this. All of this is just common sense and experience, but it might be helpful for some people. Please add to it. I´m just writing this as I have breakfast.

    Trolls

    What is a troll?

Here are some Urban Dictionary definitions:

Act of appearing on internet forums and boards with malicious intent. Trolling includes:
-batting people to flame at you
-putting the forum down and encouraging people to leave.
    -flaming
    -spamming
-using several identities on a board to support your own arguments / stage pretend arguments
-generally being a dick on a power trip.
Some trolls claim they actions benefit others. These trolls are also twats

    Or more informally:

Being a prick on the internet because you can. Typically unleashing one or more cynical or sarcastic remarks on an innocent by-stander, because it's the internet and, hey, you can. *

    How to spot a troll

Trolls often will instigate flame wars, be provocatively contrarian or insulting. Their posts are often very repetitive and formulaic. After a while you get an instinct to what is trolling and what is not.

Some people are just very outspoken and some have argumentative personalities without being trolls. E.g. Chuckystud is not a troll: even when I don´t agree with him I get the impression that 100% of what he says he is genuine about. He is outspoken, but is trying to help. Trolls just say stuff to get a rise.

How to deal with a troll

On RJ it´s easy: ignore and report. Trolls enjoy the chaos they create. Silence hurts them.

    DON´T FEED THE TROLLS

The RJ staff are very good at dealing with them. When you report them (which you do by going to their page and clicking “report abuse”, it saves time if you can copy the location of the trolls trolling).

    Abusive emails

Easy. Ignore, block the sender and report to admin. There is no reason why anyone should have to suffer with these. Just don´t do a Bonquiqui and call sucurity on everyone who is not 100% in agreement with you

    Fake profiles

Fake profiles are sad because the people who make them are not happy with who they are.

How to spot a fake profile
Often fake profiles have only one picture, or a few “studio” pictures which they probably lifted from a web site. Some people steal whole sets of other people´s pics which makes them a bit harder to spot. People are not likely to steal pictures of someone who they don´t consider attractive, and so the hotter the pics the more likely they are to have been stolen. HOWEVER, on RJ there are a lot of very good looking and hot guys, including many professional models and porn models, so you can´t just dismiss everyone who is hot. DancerJack is 100% real, even if you may have seen his pics somewhere else. icon_rolleyes.gif Ways of spotting real pics include: multiple pics, pics with the person with others, informal pics (the classic cell phone in the mirror). Verification is good because it makes it harder to fake a profile, which is why people here prefer you to get verified, and the truth is, the hotter you are the more you need to get verified. Often the fake profile is not filled in and the location is just USA.

What to do about a fake profile
I always report people: stealing another person´s identity is not OK.

    Happy RJing

*he doesn´t actually mean "cynical", but so few people use the word correctly, like "ironic".

P.S. There's another kind of troll. Who starts a very provocative thread with a link to a site/blog he is promoting. He usually is pictureless and only has 1 post and leaves after posting never to return.

I call them the Royal Tailors.
