Is the economy hitting your gym?

It appears my gym is trying to economize.

I noticed some while ago, that the TVs in the locker room disappeared. I figured that was to save on the electric bill. No big deal. Those damn things were annoying. And who watched them anyway.

Then I noticed the fans out in the workout area werent always turned on. But if a fan was off, they would turn it on with no problem if you requested it.

Now they are restricting sweat towels. Starting sometime in August, we will be rationed to one sweat towel. I was kind of surprised when I joined this gym that they didnt have full towel service. I have have take my own bath towels for the sauna and showers. I would just help myself to several sweat towels to make up for any drying I needed to do that my bath towels didnt take care of.

But even an hour on the elliptical usually takes two sweat towels. I mean we are only talking handkerchief sized towels with the texture of sandpaper.

Do I have some vague recollection that this is the video where George Bush was shown among the "baddies" but Madonna had to remove him because of protests from the rabid right wing? Or did I just imagine that? He certainly deserves to be there.

i haven't noticed anything like that at my gym. employees at the gym do go around turning off the TVs on the treadmills and ellipticals, but that's more i think a matter of not wasting energy no matter what the economy.

my gym is pretty 'upscale' -- doctors, lawyers, law and med students, at least one city council man -- so maybe it isn't as affected by the economy. (i am none of the above - i joined when it opened so i got a great deal. and i have the cheapest membership available.) But i wonder if people are taking fewer one-on-one training sessions and instead going for the free group classes. i have noticed that there are not as many printouts of class schedules, business cards, promos for new classes, their in-house newsletter, etc available to take with you, so they may be cutting back on printing costs there. and they have a few treadmills that really need to be professionally repaired that haven't been.

They did announce, though, earlier this year they would not be raising the rates this year because that would be tough on some members.

My gym is 24 hours monday to friday, so i wonder if they might cut back the hours to save some $$.

    Very interesting topic question though.

    YES!

I was just thinking of starting a similar thread a few days ago

My gym have cut back on their staffing, made cut backs in their renovations, cut some of their satellite TV subscriptions and....

I asked last week I asked why there was no liquid soap in the dispensers and one of the maintenance guys told me they weren't supposed to tell members but they had cut back on filling them up icon_neutral.gif

Significantly upscale gym($100+ a month for adults, $70 for me as a student, plus $500 joining fee, although that's negotiable and they only use that on either stupid people or people that leave and come back) that let itself go in recent years and was planning major renovations to bring it up now that competitors are biting at their heals, but they delayed it and now they are suffering and loosing a lot of members

Although the fact that it's a lot emptier...kind of makes up for it

OK, the visual from the topic title was too good.

How's the economy looking now that it's hitting your gym? Is it getting better abs n triceps...hopefully looking a little healthier? Is it just admiring itself in the mirrors, or giving you furtive glances when you're not looking?

Hopefully it's not going there for hook-ups...icon_lol.gif

    No, that was American Life

Here is the uncensored version where SHE DOES throw a grenade at GWB...
Keep in mind that the imagery would have had to have been released right on top of 9/11 and I think she pulled it because it was disturbing at that point. In retrospect, it was pretty damn good LOL

That $40,000,000 SECOND home on the Upper East Side she just bought to compliment the one(s) she has on the Upper West Side of Manhattan probably has cotton towels that are probably really soft.

No but I'm glad I joined 8 yrs ago. Rates went up again. They just re-did the men's locker room. Marble tile, wooden lockers, dry steam sauna, new showers!!

My gym is Equinox. The brand is luxury, so the only thing I have noticed is little green colored signs above the sinks that say "Remember, every drop counts!"

They still charge me $173 a month and provide unlimited refrigerated aromatherapy scented towels (I think it is mint) for wiping sweat and having a cooling feeling that has a similar effect of warm towels in a japanese restaurant.

Sometimes, the staff even walks around handing them out with a smile icon_smile.gif

Not much at my gym. I go to Crunch and I see no real signs of it here in NYC

Although I must admit that I was able to negotiate quite a good deal when it came time for my renewal in May

Mine is 24 hours, but they are cheating too much with the thermostat after staff hours. Gets pretty hot in there if you go at night. I think it has less to do with the economy since it has gone on as long as it's been open. It's more a cheap owner.

My usual gym is kinda dumpy. It's an old 24 Hour that desperately needs to be renovated. So I haven't noticed any cut backs.

Sometimes I go to a different 24 Hour location that is much newer/nicer. No cut backs there either. In fact, they recently replaced all the old CRT TV sets with brand new LCD flat panels.

I have noticed less people at the gym now. Not sure if people are discontinuing their membership, or maybe they're all on vacation.

Well, membership still seems strong, but they have yet to fix a bunch of the aerobic machines, the general a/c, and replace some of the weights.

It's been the best ever for my gym. It's a uni gym, so it's benefitted from nearly $1million in stimulus payments.

They built a dojo, bought all new weights, machines, treadmills and bikes. It's pretty bloody nice now. Thanks greedy American banks!

TheGuyNextDoor saidDamn straight they are having a hard time all over,,, EVEN Equinox.
Expensive gym memberships, manicures and dinner out is the first thing that gets cut in a bad economy. My previous gym gave us a 2 week notice that it was closing earlier this month. So much for paying for a full year at a time...

I'm interested, what are they cutting at your Equinox in Dallas?

My gym is Gold's and I have found out that this sweat towel discontinuance is a corporate decision and the sweat towels will be discontinued in the Gold's Gyms on the east coast.
