Fess up RJ golfers: let's come out of the closet
iguanaSF Posts: 1222

Noticing that a recent entry to my embarrassingly large hot list was a golfer, I was reminded of the looks I get from so many gay guys when I mention that I golf, and... heaven forbid, even own my own clubs. The look on these guys' faces makes me think I had one of my frequent psychotic breaks and confessed that I often grind up kittens in a blender to pass the time.

So in the tradition of Harvey Milk, I'm calling on all you gay golfers out there in RJ land: stand up and be proud! Only when we're all out of the closet will all gay guys know that every one of them knows a friend... a lover... a hair dresser... even a flight attendant, who is a golfer and who is proud of it.

I'm saying, right here, right now, that I'm a gay golfer and I'm proud.

And that I own my own golf clubs. Yeah, that's right -- I have golf clubs in my closet! Callaways even. And I'm not afraid to say it!

Who's next?
Jul 18, 2009 1:03 PM GMT
I do! I just bought my first set of clubs and am actively practicing my swing and technique at a driving range. It's great fun and I don't understand why more guys don't try it.

Perhaps it's the sports associations with "elitism" and "classism" that make gays so averse to it. Who knows. I think it's awesome though.

Yeah, the elitism thing was a big reason, but Tiger changed a lot of that years ago, bless his amazingly talented (and hot, and cute, and smart, and uh... superhuman) soul.

It's also sometimes the price. In some locations (here in Northern Cali), the greens fees, even at municipal courses, can be pretty steep.

My fav thing about it is it makes at least 75% of the people who play it become absolutely mental! Half the fun, for me, is watching other golfers go thru 4 or 5 emotional breakdowns during over the course of 18 holes.

<-- Gay Golfer and proud too. I <3 golf on TV too.

i don't think it has anything to do with elitism at all. For me- I just don't think it's a sport.

It's a game that only old men and lazy people play from what I can see.

You should see an eye doctor then or turn on your TV and see who is actually playing.

Ugh. I was hoping this thread wouldn't get sidetracked into this dead horse. Silly me. I said the magic word: "golf."

Can anyone who wants to bitch on this (* cough *) "topic" please use one of the previous threads on it? For example: http://www.realjock.com/gayforums/366734/

Kthanx.

Back to the topic at hand: a positive thread for gay golfers to come out -- yay!

It was the biggest rush watching Tiger on the last three holes yesterday almost make the cut. I was screaming and then got really angry on 18.

He single-handedly ruined a shit ton of Americans weekends. Like watching Watson is fun? I have a two cases of beer that I refuse to drink because Tiger isn't in the Open.

eh, arnold palmer -90 years or not too far from
vijay singh - i know they say he's born in 63, but he looks as though it's 2 decades prior
ballesteros - isn't he like 70 years now

the only young ones tiger woods and that guy from spain. And tiger woods is the only one in shape. the others are all fat and out of shape. as chukles would say they are all lard asses... or would he say fat asses

no can do. unless you can rump around it in and drop sweat like you are in a sauna, it's not a sport. doesn't work for me.

but you are right - to each his own

Been golfing for about 20 years. Worked at a golf course for three summers during college. It was nice because we could play for 25 cents when we weren't working.

Watched quite a bit of golf too during college. My favorite golfer will always be Freddie Couples.

Tom Watson's run is great. This is the first time I am watching golf in years.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that despite playing for many years, I still suck at golf.

Oh wow I'm here trembling in my boots. that's the sort of stuff that someone who plays golf would do. So from what I can see true to form.

Sorry, I'm the OP. I control the vertical. I control the horizontal. I declare putt putt as a valid form of golf for the purposes of this coming out thread.

Golfer here and proud of it. I love it! At times very serene and peaceful, other time frustrating as hell. What I like about it is I don't have to rely an anyone else. It's just me and the course and what stands in the way of shooting a great score is me.

For anyone who says it is not a sport I dare them to throw 50+lbs on your back and walk 5 miles, not always on flat terrain. Depending on the weather, you'll be sweating your ass off and huffing and puffing too boot. I know because I do it every week.

And for those who only mention Arnold Palmer and Seve Ballesteros, I'm sorry but you are really showing your age. Camilo Villegas was named "the most ripped player on Tour" by Golf Digest and People magazine voted him one of the hottest bachelors.

Granted, most of the average joe public is definitely old and lazy but the guys on the PGA Tour is a totally different story. Most of them have the same dedication like any other athlete. Anyone who says it's just a bunch of old lazy guys needs to really turn on the TV before making such a ridiculous statement.

Love the sport and Yes.. it's a sport.
I have gone to The Master's Golf Tournament the last 6 years in a row and am set for 2010 in April again...
I grew up in a golfing family so it's just a staple in my life. Plus, like our SEXY OP... I have always thought golfers were Hot!
Two years ago in 07, I was at a dinner in Augusta, Ga., turned around and Phil Michelson stuck his hand out to introduce himself and his wife Amy.. Now, that's one TALL glass of Yum-Yum. 6'4". Even made me fell short at 6'2".
Practice rounds at the Augusta National are my favorite days as you can get really close to the golfers and take some great photos. The days following, cameras are the Big no-no on the course as are cells, Blackberries and the like.
Golfing is a beautiful thing in my mind. I have a few pics in my profile that were taken during Masters if you sift through all the junk.

I can play golf, gotten a few birdies and shit even got a hole in one on a par 3 which caused everyone including people I didn't know to go completely bonkers about it.. I even got free drinks back at the club house... I thought the best part of the game was the free drinks back at the club house, I just wish we didn't have to finish a dozen more holes before we could go get those free drinks..

I then had to listen to them go on and on and on about that hole in one on a par fucking three..

I've never been make.. bloody irritating..

Chaax: Yes, all the guys on the course I play look like that. It's the course. In. My. Mind.

Jeff: Holy shit. Your friend must be some golfer himself! In Garden City, when I was growing up, it was mainly putt putt, then riding our bikes to King Kone to hang out menacingly.

Growing up in my family you had to play golf. It was just what everyone did. So, I played every week (usually a couple times), had the club league on the weekends, and we all played as a family on vacations. It was actually a fun family activity. I also have a lot of trophies from it too - yeah I was good.

Once I went to college though, i just didn't play all that much. For one, it's an expensive hobby. I actually haven't been in years now and should probably shoot a round or two for practice.

Golf for me is more enjoyable in the early morning or late afternoon without the cart. I much prefer to walk.

I golf once maybe twice a year, whether I want to or not......damn fraternity alumni golf outings! I usually end up with the "hacker award", along with some other really out of place and odd award...like "hole-in-one" or "closest to pin" and of course the high score.....bastards always want me to play for money too! I learned that lesson a long time ago...not on your fucking life! Although I do like to "hold and address my shaft" with a firm grip and play with my balls.....

Timber: well, you can still march in the "friends of gay golfers" pride parade contingent, but no membership card for you.

And yeah, Sporty, there's a lot of homo terminology in golf: balls, holes, shafts. "Bogie" always felt vaguely sexual to me as well, for some reason.

Try walking 18 holes in 90 degree heat. Defintely can't be lazy, and you'll be feeling it the next day.

I don't play much anymore. Too hot most of the year in FL to play, when it is nice all the snowbirds are down here taking up all the tee time. Needless to say, my clubs are collecting dust in my garage.

I love golfing!!! My first job out of college was to write gps software for golf courses, and that got me into golfing. There are some beautiful golf courses here in Southern California, especially Pelican Hill in Newport Beach and Castle Creek in San Diego.

Robbie, that takes the award for the most nerdy way to be introduced to golf. Bravo!

Other annoyed readers: note the oh so subtle way I keep this thread active by the seemingly innocent pattern of congratulating all the golfers who come out of the closet? Brilliant, no?

IguanaSF:

I've been out of the gay golf closet for a while now. I started the south Florida gay golf group over ten years ago, and we've expanded to have games every Wednesday and every Sunday, most Saturdays and frequently on Mondays and Fridays (lower handicappers). We sponsor clinics regularly during the season, November 1 thru April 30, for beginners or experienced players. We've organized three teaching professionals in different parts of South Florida who work with us on clinics and lessons. There are a number of gay golf associations around the country...if you don't have one, it's pretty easy to start. You'll be amazed how many gay folks do play golf!

It was interesting to note that the "Punks come out of the closet" thread got a lot more activity than this one. I wonder if there are any gay Punk golfers?

I'm a golfer and I had the best round of the summer today until the thunderstorm shut things down for awhile. I've golfed all my life and I really enjoy it. My boyfriend said he is going to learn to play so we have another activity that we can do together. Golf is fun, frustrating, challenging, irritating, exciting, plus it's just nice to be outside.
