An astronomer in Australia noticed the impact. Its the 2nd in the last few years on Jupiter. If we had that kind of impact on Earth.....we wouldn't be here anymore...

    From CNN:

Amateur astronomer spots new mark on solar system's largest planet

NASA confirms discovery is result of object crashing into Jupiter's atmosphere

Scientists say object could be a block of ice or a wandering comet

Object has left scar the size of Earth in Jupiter's southern polar region

(CNN) -- Jupiter is sporting a new scar after a mystery object hit the gaseous planet this week, NASA scientists say.

This NASA image shows a large impact near Jupiter's southern pole.

1 of 2 An amateur astronomer in Australia noticed the new mark on the planet Sunday and tipped off scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, who then confirmed it was the result of a new impact, NASA said.

It's not clear what the object was that crashed into Jupiter's poisonous atmosphere.

Glenn Orton, a JPL scientist, told the magazine New Scientist that it could have been a block of ice from somewhere in Jupiter's neighborhood, or a wandering comet that was too faint for astronomers to have detected before impact.

"We were extremely lucky to be seeing Jupiter at exactly the right time, the right hour, the right side of Jupiter to witness the event. We couldn't have planned it better," Orton said in a NASA interview.

Scientists also don't know how large the object was, but the impact scar it created is about the same size as Earth, JPL astronomer Leigh Fletcher told the magazine.

It is only the second time scientists have been able to observe such an impact on Jupiter. The first happened 15 years ago, when comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 broke into 21 pieces and hit the planet's atmosphere.

"Given the rarity of these events, it's extremely exciting to be involved in these observations," Fletcher said in a NASA interview.

Researchers also found hints of higher-than-normal amounts of ammonia in the upper atmosphere. The Shoemaker-Levy comet also churned up extra ammonia, the magazine said.

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun and the largest in our solar system.

Its colorful atmosphere is 86 percent hydrogen and 14 percent helium, with tiny amounts of methane, ammonia, phosphine, water, acetylene, ethane, germanium, and carbon monoxide. The chemicals are responsible for producing the different colors of Jupiter's clouds.

The temperature at the top of those clouds is about -145 degrees Celsius (-230 degrees Fahrenheit), but far hotter near the planet's center. There, the core temperature may be about 24,000 degrees Celsius (43,000 degrees Fahrenheit), hotter than the surface of the sun.

The most outstanding feature on Jupiter's surface is the Great Red Spot, a storm of gas that swirls at a speed of about 360 kilometers (225 miles) per hour at its edge. The diameter of the spot is about three times that of Earth

It certainly gives pause for thought.

I was talking to a friend about our university and he spoke of the astronomy students being the most "spaced out" (his pun wasn't intended) as far as things go here on Earth.

Getting an appreciation for the vastness of our universe really makes us pause to think how petty we can be to one another.

its scary to think that it could happen to our planet..i wonder if a more advance race would step in to help our civilization if they detected such an event was going to take place..with regards to our planet.

I wouldn't bet on it. Whats different now vs. 65 million years ago?

Well 65 million years ago they had only the dinasours to judge...
Nice thought.. but I wouldn't bet the planet. I doubt if we would have an outcome like the 3rd season episode from the original "Star Trek" series..

I think a more likely scenario would be something knocking our moon out of orbit, which would totally mess us up.

Odd that astronomers didn't see this coming. They pretty much have every large comet's possible collision course with any planet pegged long in advance.

we are pathetic little ants with absolutely no significant whats so ever, we are almost entirely incapable of even helping each other or our selfs, why would anyone look at us and think we are worth saving..

I would agree.. but of course I doubt if it was a comet, something else.. maybe we will hear about it.

Jupiter is a larger planet with a larger gravitational pull, so it's more likely to pull things in and get smacked around.

This freaked me out a bit since lately I have been having dreams related to the apocalypse which has become consistent and more aggressive with each passing night.

The last of the series included pebbles from all the other planets on which we are all allotted a small piece of all the planets' remnants that we put on our foreheads to determine if we will survive or be saved or not.

I am hardly able to sleep 'cos of this and for the first time, the earth has never been filled with busy spirits who aid in taking us to the other side rather peacefully to spare us from the worst mankind could ever experience.

It scares me to keep a blog about it. I tried to post my attempt to map the signs and how heaven looks like and for some strange reason, RJ won't allow it. I attempted it twice. Anyway, it's on my Facebook notes for everyone to see:

What I've shared above is actually Day 3 which is yet to be added on there.

Well Zim, you realize, you must learn to do the "wonder woman" conversion (or at least wonder girl). See the Debra Winger video on your other thread.
So that way you can save us... You will be "WonderZim" (sporting US colors of course).

Mapping Out The Apocalyptic Dream I've Had The Past Two Mornings
    Share
    Saturday, 18 July 2009 at 19:23 | Edit note | Delete

[Note: The streets mentioned are from my hometown in the Philippines. I don't know their relevance, but I'm telling it as it is.]

    Day 1
    • Mum
    • President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo
    • Cult led by the President
    • Big fight with mum for BFF’ng the President, I lost her eventually as she's no longer herself
    • Hills along Miranda Street
    • Deforestation, trees were bleeding in bright crimson colour that blended well with the sunset
    • Stray dogs in the street humping big turtles
    • Big long running vines along Sto. Entierro Street
    • Central Bank evacuated
    • “Rolling out the red carpet for the Anti-Christ”
    • Building the new Noah’s Arks, plural.

    Day 2
    • Portal to hell under a condemned Family Theatre, Henson Street (the whole block, in fact)
    • Big German stage actors – all males dressed as nuns with hanging trays draped in black singing the soprano part; all females dressed as Vikings singing like real tenors.
    • One public hospital I can’t identify
    • Lots of Mister Donuts doughnuts that don’t appeal to me
    • All public bathrooms out of order, the dumped all inflatables on the toilets for no reason, friendly cleaners on guard but with creepy smiles.
    • Emal claiming to see three ghosts in my room (I think I was a confined patient) and called in an exorcist.
    • My hospital room is like a show window where people can see me from outside the street
    • The three ghosts were white lights who seemed to be harmless
    • Modern exorcism summons the ‘evil’ spirits (although I think any spirit) to come out and they get sucked into this tiny rectangular capsule that traps them an gets them enclosed securely to KARAOKE microphone chip that get magnified and then becomes minute then a blueprint appears to seal them for eternity which then becomes a map of some forgettable place in the States where these microphones are manufactured. Apparently the spirits punishment is the hell they get as they are the direct contact with people enjoying bad karaoke
    • Poor street vendors who you accidentally hurt/cut with the hemline of your shorts –they approach you for compensation and won’t leave you alone
    • Ice when it melts it becomes green curry
    • Failed exorcism killing the priest/doctor gave birth to a zombie who the other existing zombies wait for to arrive
    • And these existing zombies are very fit, sun-loving people so we’re screwed
    • Those who know the exits well and rushing to save their lives are the first ones to die as they only end up finding their own traps
    • We don’t bleed stepping on broken glass or nails
    • There were a lot of plywood in the dream
    • In heaven, in my dream, people(?) all look alike. People walk/float on clouds and the sky is green. The amazing thing is the population there wears each others’ faces so they can just be still and communicate to the person they wish to speak to without moving at all (or talking, even! as it was peaceful in there but joyful.). In other words, if heaven had a population of a million, each person had a million faces you can see at the same time, like a pile of transparencies, and all so distinct from one another!! They were all wearing expensive uniform suits. I was just an observer who no one sees.

Jupiter really comes in handy and protects the inner solar system planets by taking in some of these massive space objects from hitting us..

However it only lowers the risk.. We still have a chance of being hit.. We're hit everyday by small rocks.. However ones like the rock that hit us 65 million years ago don't come as often.

They say that our moon was formed when a huge collision with earth in its early stages when it was still lava caused a huge chunk of the planet too break off and cool becoming the moon.
