What are your favorite things to add to a protein shake?

I'm looking for little add-ins to put into my shake to make it more protein-dense or just plain tastier. What do you like to put in?

Bonus points if it goes with Cookies 'n Cream, which is what i have.

Try buying some Kefir. It's basically liquid yogurt and has a lot of good probiotics in it. Not only can you get some great flavors but this is one of the healthiest things you can do for your stomach.

All sorts of flavors, coconut (my fav), strawberry/banana, coffee, vanilla, apricot and a few others.

Raw eggs are not a good idea.

It's best to get those pasteurized eggs in cartons. I add about a cup of that into my protein drink. A cup gives me about 24g of egg protein and is fat free.

It depends when I drink the protein shake. I have a 30gram protein shake during the first 30 minutes after a work out. I add brown, unrefined sugar to this so that I get about 100 grams of carbs which gives a post work out carb :protein ratio of 3:1.

Flax seeds are great. I buy them whole and use a coffee grinder to pulverize them and I used them in my protein drinks. They give a nutty flavor to the protein drink and one TBSP is 9 whopping grams of fiber.

yes I LOVE flax seeds, but I have made the mistake of adding 3-4 whopping TBSP in my protein shake......boy did I learn my lesson

Perhaps a naive question, but has anyone here tried building lean muscle using protein derived from their diet and without additional supplements or protein bars / shakes?

And if so, has anyone had any particular success?

This is not naive question at all. There is a view that if you need to take protein supplements you are not training at a high enough intensity. However, the reality is that in order to put on lean muscle and keep % body fat down you need 1.5 - 2 grams of protein /kg body weight/24 hours. Many guys (myself included) find it really difficult to get this from day to day food intake. It is a lot of chicken tuna, salmon, etc. So it is often necessary to supplement with a additional protein from a shake or a bar. 30 grams a day from such a source is usually all that is needed. The only other supplement which has proven benefits is creatin as this enables you to lift heavier weights and train more intensively. However, it is contraindicated over the age of 55 as kidney function starts to decline thereafter as part of the normal ageing process and kidney failure has been reported in older guys who use creatin.

I use Milo or Strawberry Quik... Sure, a wee bit of sugar, but you only need a little bit... 20g and 12g respectively.

I've also used coconut essence (Meh), imitation low kJ Maple Syrup (Alright) and coffee (Then started taking creatine so ditched the coffee).

I prefer to eat food so the protein powder is just for added protein... So it's 100% whey isolate, no flavours and I can add all kinds of things. Now, if only I liked chocolate I'd be golden...

I donīt use supplements, but I love cooking and make 3 cooked meals a day (lunch, merienda and cena) as well as breakfast and several sandwiches. That said Iīd not say Iīm a resounding success.

The strongmen of the past had no supplements as such

This is Eugen Sandow and his main dietary advice (that I have read up to now) was to eat cheaper cuts of meat and fish and not waste money on lobster.
