"Kingston police have charged the mother, father and brother of three young girls found dead with a caregiver in a car submerged in the Rideau Canal with first degree murder.

The bodies of Zainab Shafia, 19, Sahar Shafia, 17, Geeti Shafia, 13, and Rona Amir Mohammed, 50, were discovered June 30 in a Nissan Sentra under water in the Kingston Mills Locks.

At a press conference Thursday, police said they had charged Mohammad Shafia, the girls' father, Tooba Shafia Yahya, the girls' mother, and the girls' oldest brother with four counts each of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Police also revealed that Ms. Mohammed, previously identified as a female relative, is believed to be Mr. Shafia's first wife.

While police would not confirm that the deaths had been an “honour killing,” as has been suggested in reports by The Kingston Whig-Standard, they said that “the culture issue” may have played a role."

    -The Globe & Mail

This doesn't seem to have gotten much play in the U.S.

Of course not! What significance would this have to American culture? not saying it's rt but why do you think it's received little to no media coverage? Mine might hold some bias but I'm curious to what you might think?

In what culture is it an "honour" to kill 3 young girls?

In Liberia, young rape victims are often shunned because of the "shame" it brings to the family. Exactly why their president is trying to reverse this horrible practice.

Is this Kingston, Jamaica? I can't find the original article.

This did not happen int he country of Jamaica..i repeat..this did not happen in the country of Jamaica. This happened in Canada... as a matter of fact there are countless places in the world with the name kingston and jamaica. The individuals in the case are also from a middle eastern culture which has strict rules concerning women which is suspected for the murders.

i googled "Rideau Canal" and this is what i came up with.

    Andrew Chung
    QUEBEC BUREAU CHIEF

MONTREAL–The mother, father and their eldest son accused of planning and carrying out the killings of four female members of their immediate family will all plead not guilty, their lawyers say.

Mohammad Shafia, 56, his wife Tooba Mohammad Yahya, 39, along with their 18-year-old son Hamed Mohammad Shafia, appeared in court in Kingston on Thursday to face charges of first-degree murder and conspiring to commit the murders.

The bodies of three teenaged sisters as well as a 50-year-old woman police say is Mohammad Shafia's first wife, Rona Amir Mohammed, were found June 30 underwater in the family's Nissan Sentra in the Rideau Canal in Kingston. The three suspects are in custody, and officials say a bail hearing in the Superior Court of Ontario might not occur for at least two weeks.

However, their lawyers said they are ready to enter pleas.

"My client claims he is innocent," said Waice Ferdoussi, one of Canada's only Afghan lawyers who was hired by one of the elder Shafia's relatives to represent him. "He will plead not guilty."

Similarly, Yahya's lawyer Lucie Joncas said she will do the same and fully expects the case to go to trial. Jean-Claude Dubé, lawyer for Hamed Shafia, said it's still very early in the process but that he also expects to be presenting a plea of not guilty.

The deaths have captured international attention as police explore the possibility that the deaths were an "honour" killing. The three deceased sisters are Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13.

The suspects originally told police and reporters that the family had been returning from a trip to Niagara Falls and stopped in Kingston for the night, but that Zainab asked for the car keys. They speculated she took the car to practice driving. They made it clear she was rebellious and had done that before.

But Kingston police call that version of events "false." Though they wouldn't state a motive, Insp. Brian Begbie acknowledged that "cultural issues" were at play, and suggested the behaviour of one or more of the teenaged sisters might have played a role in the deaths.

Neighbours of the family, who lived in the north Montreal borough of Saint-Léonard, have said that last spring Zainab fell in love with a boy, causing a rift with her father, and that she even ran away for two or three weeks. Police sources also said that Hamed was authoritarian with his sisters and Montreal's child protection agency visited the home three times after Zainab called police.

Meanwhile, the sister of Rona Amir Mohammed, Diba Masoomi, who lives in France, wrote to the Kingston police to say her sister and Zainab had been receiving death threats "for social, cultural and family reasons."

I live in Canada and havent seen this. Its not getting much media play because of the "immigrant" background of those involved, (not my personal beliefs, so dont yell racism). If it were a white middle class family, itd be world wide news.

The "honor" killings happened in my hometown. I drive by those locks all the time and it's really difficult to drive into the water by accident.

Yeah, I saw this. The police had taped recorded telephone conversations of the murderers talking about how the daughters and aunt deserved to die what with their shameful adaptation to Western ways.

Hope they get raped daily in jail for the rest of their lives.

Responsible media should never refer to murder as honor killings.

"The deaths have captured international attention as police explore the possibility that the deaths were an "honour" killing."

The proper term which ought to be used is filicide or simply murder. Barbarism veiled in religion or other cultural practice does not imbue it with respectability.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filicide
"A filicide" may refer to the parent who killed his or her child as well as to the criminal act that the parent committed

The father still has all the control over his real estate despite being in the jail. I just read in Mcleans today and the family was prepared to go to the jail. The police search on the son's computer found that he googled - can a person control his real estate while being in the jail. Not only the Shafias planned the killing thoughfully they were well aware of the repurcussions.

Its not the religion so much, maybe read the Koran one day and you'll see. Islam has been hijacked by radicals, much like christianity in some western countries.
No Im not muslim nor christian nor Jew or any of the other pointless religions people spend their lives trying to obey. However I give them all a fair go and research by talking to and visiting their various places of worship before I make dumb fuck responses.

Thats not true.. honour codes hold for non-religious/secular people as well .. it does so in most countries... the koran never gave absolute power to men.. quite the contrary.. stop accusing a book when you dont know the contents.. and no Im not muslim, not even pro-islamic.. not christian, nor pro-christianity.. but I cannot stand by while people make false accusations.... If you make an accusation, make sure you make the proper one.. because until proven guilty.. the book is innocent..

(that said, the book is guilty on many counts, including homophobia.. but it does not make women the property of men.. MEN do that)
