I've been reading some articles on conservative Christian news sites (worldnetdaily, culturaldefense.org) and this promotion is certainly causing a stir.

Do you guys think its appropriate to offer discounts based on sexuality? On that note, what does sexuality have to do with air travel?

Marketing is not about what is "appropriate" it is about what sells.

The LGBT travelers market is a powerful one, and so naturally agencies, airlines, hotels are tapping into this newly discovered buyers market.

I also do believe it is "appropriate" there are different concerns that LGBT travelers face that are unique from heteros.

-If you are a gay family will you and your loved ones be accepted, is the environment safe?

-Perhaps you want to go to an inclusive resort or cruise.

So I think there are issues that are unique to gays with regards to travel and why not choose an airline, hotel, or agency that makes it easier to address your needs and have a safe happy time.

I think its interesting how a lot of the news sites that I've seen are presenting Alaska Air's gay discount as a 'surcharge to heterosexuals'.

http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=58929Alaska is basically imposing a 10 percent surcharge for these destinations on travelers who are sexually normal. It's certainly odd to see such blatant discrimination against heterosexuals from a company that claims to be all about equal treatment for everyone,"

I am sure those same people are in favor of surcharges to non-Christians in the name of a couple of bucks donated to Jesus Camp.

Airlines offer similar promotional discounts to pretty much any group. For example every convention of significant size will have airline discount codes available. (Usually, it's still not the best possible fare.) I'm sure they offer promotions to religious groups and events as well.

Still... I'd like to see them make someone drop to their knees at the ticket counter to prove they deserve the discount!

    Ted Haggard concurs.

I'm sure that they won't be checking gay cards when someone uses this promotion.. I think just the fact that Alaska Airlines is advertising it on www.alaskaairlines.com/gaytravel (and no where else) is what's causing the ruckus.
