ok i was over my exs apartment yesterday and i saw he had the DVD of the movie "Showgirls"---with Elizabeth Berkley....this woman is soo good at acting. Like i thought the movie was exceptional so im wondering why did it fail at the box offices? And after doing my internet research ...i realized that they sorta blamed her for the bombed movie.. In all honesty..she really did excellent work in this film....and i dont see why she hasn't done more bigscreen movies..(was she blacklisted?)....so why isnt she labeled as A-list?? After checking out her pictures...i no longer saw saved by the bell...and also wondered why was Angelina Jolie called the hottest woman in Hollywood?--check out the pictures

I wonder if you are being serious.
I mean, most of the people watching the fim get that the whole film was supposed to be kitschy and a joke but nobody told her that. And she said she was humiliated at the premier because she did not realize what had happened until she saw it herself.

It's a campy film. I guess it's sort of the Mommie Dearest of the 90's, so bad it's good sort of thing.

Yeah, I thought it was awesomely bad too. The acting and story were pretty awful. But I thought it was entertaining, in general.

I've never seen Showgirls. Is it worth it in that bad movie that's hilarious sort of way?

Ha. Classy dialogue. I know the same writer wrote Basic Instinct, which I just saw last year and found to be a terrible movie. I will have to watch for Showgirls the next time it's on basic cable.

I'm going to see it at Peaches Christ Midnight Mass in SF this Friday night.

A room full of drag queens is going to recreate the volcano scene.

    I can't wait!!

The acting was terrible and the movie was supposed to be a joke. Eliz is said to still be bitter about to this day.

Great acting? Umm... maybe you shouldn't sit so close to the TV. This movie was awful in just about every way, and Angelina doesn't look anorexic like this woman does.

Ah well, the joys of Showgirls, where to begin???...

-Could it be Berkley's ability to go from 1 to 100 emotionally over fries ("Different places!")

-Or perhaps this lovely bit of dialogue:
CRYSTAL: You should piss me off darlin' now that we're friends.
NOMI: No, you shouldn't get pissed off...it makes you look older.

-OR this fabulous line: "We could've brought anyone in the show, LaToya, Susan, Paula Abdul, but we chose Nomi!"

-Or at the strip club (called "The Cheetah"!) as the boss says to a naive stripper whose insisted upon being called by her real name, Penny (hehe!): "They don't want to fuck a Penny, dum-dum, the want to fuck a Heather, or a Hope."

    -"I can't, I just got my period...check."

OMFG, yes its trashy, yes its campy, yes its kitchy to the max, but my god, its such a fucking spectacle I LOVE IT!

I thought Showgirls worked exactly in the way it was intended - as an exploitation movie. The cinematography, the costumes, the art direction are all top-notch. Paul Verhoeven is a great filmmaker. I think this movie is underrated.

Her acting has improved though in recent years...

Here on Without A Trace she plays an everyday average girl who goes on a TV show (American Goddess) to have an extreme plastic surgery makeover.

I like Angelina Jolie - she's the hottest/most famous woman in Hollywood because let's see - she got Brad Pitt from Jennifer Aniston, she rocks in Action Movies, she adopted babies from 3rd world countries and she's healing the world through her Humanitarian efforts/charities. (and let not go to her history of blood-vial wearing and making out with her brother at the Oscar bad girl image). She basically changed her image into a loving caring woman ever since she adopted Maddox, the Cambodian boy in 2002. People love to see that and she probably got a lot of respect from her peers.

I don't really believe that Elizabeth was blacklisted - she was simply bad at the role - many people believed that I guess - I saw the movie - she was okay, not like an Oscar-worthy or that memorable of a performance but she was okay (a 7 out of 10 stars).

As for why the movie failed (commercially), topics were about Lesbianism, interracial love, stabbing people back to get on the top, the underworld of showgirl business in Vegas - maybe people weren't ready or as open-minded with these subjects in 1995. And to see this gorgeous girl from save by the bell to become a showgirl in this dark movie - people just didn't like the sudden image-change from the girl next door to the almost whore in Showgirls. Imagine - think about if "Julia Roberts" suddenly took a role about "I am going to be a Lesbian in Vegas and became a top showgirl - and screw multiple guys to get there" - I'd think that her star image power would fall pretty fast, too. In the end, it's pretty much about role choices that either break or make your acting career in Hollywood. I mean - who doesn't remember her as the "Pretty Woman" back in the '90s.

Julia Roberts played a total whore in that movie getting paid for sex remember, not a good example to cite.

    Whatever happened to Zack?

    Showgirls = awesome

I think the fact EB cant act ended her career.

Yeah I know but - it's a cute/sweet/romantic movie, she's the whore with a heart of gold (it wasn't her choice to do it - remember the scene with her and Richard Gere in bed) - it's very PG 13 comparing to Showgirls which is like almost NC 17 rating. I mean - Roberts' character is more cute/lovable than Nomi (imo) - basically everyone rooted for her in the end when she got together with Richard Gere. icon_biggrin.gif The movie was a huge success - total worldwide gross $465 million to a $15 million budget. And Roberts can act, too - look at her roles/career after Pretty Woman.
