Albania's government to legalise gay marriage
Jessica Geen of PinkNewsThe government of Albania has proposed to legalise gay marriage.
    ...
Although the government has admitted the move is controversial, it is thought the law is likely to pass, as [Prime Minister Sali] Berisha's Democrats have a majority of 74 out of 140 members of parliament.

Albania is enacting gay marriage while Albany is fumbling it.

Remember when New York was the ultra liberal state that would set Republicans on fire if they stepped near it? Well, they became Democrats and forgot to change their policy accordingly.

That would be amazing. The old Albania was a closed, xenophobic and repressive society following WWII. What does that say about the US? icon_razz.gif

Good god. That is just depressing. Here, they can't even decide if gays deserve a non-discrimination law...

That would make it the first primarily Islamic country to have gay marriage. Awesome! icon_eek.gif

And a gigantic step from even Turkey and Indonesia's mere tolerance.

Only because you need pride parades to champion the cause of gay rights etc, other more advanced nations, soon to be including Albania, already have gay rights.

....so...a third world country is granted same sex right laws before "the greatest country on Earth"?

    how funny!

but I'm curious how the civilians feel about this

New York has been like this for a long time. Lots of Republicans upstate, and upstate is big. New York's elected lots of Republican governors (though they've usually been liberal Republicans) and even the city's elected lots of Republican mayors.

And the state legislature has been notorious for being unable to get things done for a very long time. So much so that back in 1969 in the musical 1776 there was a joke (that probably brought down the house at every performance on Broadway) about the state legislature being unable to reach a decision on anything way back in 1776.

I'm glad that third world countries are taking action and progressing in human right issues.

    1. Nepal

    2. India, Delhi

    3. Albania

It's still backward, and non progressive on a number of levels. Homosexuality is one of them.

You can change a law, but It still doesn't change the mindset. That can be a positive too.

When you consider how big the US is and it's population, how would you expect such a diverse country to legalize gay marriage? It's far bigger, which I think makes it more difficult to move forward as fast. It's hard to convince 300 million people the same thing when they are so spread out too. That's like having most of Europe legalize gay marriage at the same time. I'd like to see a country with even half of the US's 300 million population legalize gay rights. The UK only has 60 million. And it didn't legalize gay marriage. Just legalize civil unions for gays.

Try holding your boyfriends hand on the street in Tirana and see how long you live. My guess is roughly 30 seconds.

The Albanian "government" can pass any law it wants, because it is irrelevant. The country is about as lawless as it gets and totally infused with rule by competing clans.

No, there's plenty wrong with human rights in America but Albania is no more of an exemplar than Somalia.

Hence my quotations (sarcasm). And yes Canada has granted same-sex marriages, however, my point was that how can an Eastern European country (practically a third world country) could pass a law that we've been debating about for say....since the late 80's.

sxydrkhair saidI am surprise... Albanians are majority Muslims and other percentage are Orthodox Christians.

When you consider of the people who are religious yes. But according to the whole picture, 70% of the population is atheist/agnostic. That probably is more of the reason why this passed.
