This is a trailer from a Scandinavian tv series. Very funny, but probably all acting.

The uniforms are wrong if those are supposed to be US Drill Instructors, and a lot of other discrepancies. Not sure if the idea is that those are former DIs and this is a simulation of the US military or what, maybe they brought US sergeants over there to create this.

In any case, I would have the "recruits" all stood against a wall and shot.

I've seen the first season, and yeah... the guys are too crazy to be real. It's all blatantly set up.

Why? Stand up against a wall and get shots, maybe, but shot, really?

It was rhetorical, because they were such over-the-top, stereotypical caricatures. How about we just shoot the show's producers, instead?

I suppose, but sometimes I long for my former days in the military, the firing squads at dawn, the laying waste of whole regions... SIGH

Yeah, that's the only reason why anyone should bother to watch a certain television show, it's the deal breaker. icon_wink.gif

SD_92101 saidWhen people still believe President Obama isn't an American... all we need is stupid shit like this show (someone's hope of a cash cow) to be on the air to embolden the prudes into keeping Don't Ask Don't Tell...

As a gay combat veteran of the Marine Corps, I'm disgusted at this... they should have had real gay veterans do this show... at least then we can demonstrate our true worth and silence the critics for good!

When will our community realize it!

A good opportunity gone to waste is what this show is!

Yes, I know its Scandinavian but where is it airing? With those Marines as the show's drill instructors... it will carry water for the prudes here in the US and yes those drill instructors are real Marines whom I've met them before, in uniform.

I agree. Once again, perputuating stereotypes.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that its extremely orchestrated.

When I was in training we had some hard core flamers. People who even our drill sargents knew were gay and occasionally would get caught talking about it.

And I'll tell you what, though they switched while they walked and though some talked with a lisp, they got the job done.

Nothing hard about basic training anymore. Anyone could make it in as long as they aren't suffering from an extreme injury or obesity.

One of the gayest guys in my AIT class had some of the highest PT scores and selected to go directly into airborne training.

SD_92101 saidwell it doenst have to be "basic training" just do some missions or something... pit us against the straights in competition and see how well we do

Yes! I excelled when I went through US Army Basic Training in 1969. One of only 3 in my company of 250 who both "maxed" the PT test and scored "Expert" with the M-14. It earned me an immediate promotion to E-2 at 2 months, and a 3-day pass.

A month later I made E-3, which I held for 3 weeks before a promotion to E-4. At that point I was offered an officer's commission, which I declined, not thinking I wanted to get so committed to the military. I went over a year as an E-4, thinking I had gotten bogged down, before I made E-5 at 20 months total duty time. Those who have served know how unusual that was.

I was a Holy Terror in uniform, despite being gay. I finally took a commission, and finished a Colonel, only retiring when my health forced me. Veterans here also know how uncommon going from buck Private to Colonel is. It remains one of my greatest life regrets that I had to leave when I was near to General Officer rank.

I say this not for myself, truly, but rather to illustrate the foolish notion that gays cannot serve in uniform every bit as well as straights can. We have a number of successful military careerists here who are serving honorably right now.

And so, yeah, this Swedish thing may be amusing on some levels, but also insulting to an awful lot of us who ran circles around our straight counterparts in uniform, Drill Instructors included. A good giggle for us as an inside joke, but nothing I'm proud as an image the rest of the world may get of us.

Uh, this is new to anybody? I first saw this clip on YouTube years ago. And yeah, it is pretty ridiculous but isn't all so-called "reality" TV stupid and contrived and exploitative of small-minded stereotypes? I don't find a bunch of Scandinavian sissies in basic training that much more egregious than 16 catty bitches battling over some dickhead in a Big Brother-esque mansion or for that matter coverage by "legitimate" news media of 'professional eating' contests. Modern Big Entertainment doesn't invest much in substance or intellect or honesty-- it keeps people tuned in by stimulating our kluge brains, and it's much more economical to put ridiculous or revolting people in contrived situations for us to gawk at than to developing mentally and socially engaging media or to pay script writers and build sets.and hire trained actors to produce 'good' drama. Our brains aren't great at rationally sorting out the kind of stimulation that elevates us from the kind that denigrates us, hence (among other things) addictions and disgust/offensiveness-as-entertainment.
