The ads are now incredibly intrusive on this site

I sent a note to the site owners to let them know that they have gone overboard on the ads. I have no problem with them making money and using ads and subscriptions to do it. But there is acceptable and then there is overwhelming. The funny thing about building a community is that the people who move in begin to feel ownership. I like this site. I like the guys I have met on here. I would like to see this site continue and have the owners make money. They can do it by focusing their energy on the premium sponsors (where all the money really is) and by removing the AdSense ads (where <1% of the money is if they're doing a good job of finding and selling to premium sponsors.)

    What does everybody else think?

Bandwidth, hosting, and technical talent costs money. Someone has to pay the bill. There IS no free ride.

It's really funny that these guys work their asses off, going out of their way to create a free quality community, and that's still not enough. :)

Let them have their ads... the ONLY way they can make money with this site. They obviously care a lot, and are working hard on a redesign.

I do not care about the ads. But what is the worst is the porn ones that pop up play crappy music. Other then them it is alright.

maybe I don't get it...but other than the PREMIUM SPONSOR ads on the right column of the site, I don't see any pop up ads...

...I have pop up blocker and also IM turned off so maybe that's why...

...and I agree with what has been said before...would you give up the concept of this site as FREE to provide an ad-free website?...

...if you can find a way to have it all...then perhaps there is room for another competitive website just like this one!...

I just fired up Internet Explorer and clicked around the site. The only ads I saw were the ones along the right side of the page and the ones inserted into forum topics. There were no popup ads. The ones along the right were easy enough for me to ignore, but I found the ones inside forum topics a bit distracting. Of course, the Adblock extension in Firefox kills them all.

yeah i use firefox too and haven't noticed any popups and they only ads i see are the ones on the right hand side and they don't bother me. the only thing i don't like is that the page scrolls down a long way before you see the bottom and it's all blank, doesn't seem to have a purpose at all.

Sounds like Swiftjock has a compromised computer from here.

Time for Ad Aware, and Spybot Search and Destroy.

I've NEVER experienced a popup on this site...EVER, other than the little chat thingy which really dings CPU with all its chattiness.

I have also not had any pop ups. Even with the blocker turned off. Just the usual ads down the right-hand column. Sounds like it's time for Adaware...

I wasn't talking about pop-ups. Just the fact that the real estate is overwhelmed with ads.

Chuckystud, JonnyFreestyle, and dfrourke, I wasn't suggesting that this site be free AND have no ads.

Simply that if the site owners had their own in-house sales people, that they could go for real premium sponsorships and get rid of the Google Ad sense which provides little return but takes up a lot of space.

I work in this industry and advise clients on this all day long. Premium sponsors are worth 1000x more (literally) than AdSense.

So by removing AdSense, and putting ONLY Premium sponsors, we get the best of all worlds - a free site, advertisers that our community connects with, and highest profit for the team building the site.

No idea what the problem was back then, but today's stubborn, new pop up ad is very helpful -- Helpful in encouraging me to sign off of RJ and get something done.

This morning after I signed on, I get a gray screen that just takes over and I have to keep closing it. Very annoying.

Just had the grey screen with windoze. Works normal in Chrome, however.

    Thank you. Well said.
Was beginning to wonder if I was the only one with this annoying pop up.
I've had to close the ad EVERY TIME I've changed pages in RJ....even opening or replying to an Email.

    And I'm using Chrome. Ugh.

The news sites are worse - like a fricken pinball machine with all the animated ads, and the text keeps reformatting and jumping around as new ones pop in. It becomes impossible to read. Much less click on any link.

Plus, ever since I bought something from "Andrew Christian," I get these banner videos of naked gogo boys dancing and rubbing oil on themselves, popping up in the middle of stories about massacres and epidemics. Adds a bit of cognitive dissonance icon_neutral.gif

And it makes me wonder if everybody else using my guest network is also getting served those ads?

Nah, it's all cookie/javascript based. You can change your cookie setting to deny all cookies except the sites that actually matter to you.

lol - True. I use AdBlock, but in the current pop-up ad arms race, the news sites seem to find increasingly innovative (bloody annoying) workarounds.
