I'm moving to Sydney soon. Planning on living somewhere in the Eastern Suburbs. Any tips on anything / everything? Suburbs, specific streets, gyms, groups to join, ways to make friends, places to eat, etc. etc.? Thanks in advance!

    Hi mate

You have made a great choice to live somewhere in the eastern suburbs, some good suburbs are Randwick, Clovelly, Bronte and of course Bondi. Oh and there are plenty of good places to eat in Sydney.

Of course, that all depends on what you're into...

Cute bars, great restaurants and cafes can be found in/around Darlinghurst, Surry Hills, and Potts Point (which collectively = one of the main gaybourhoods of Sydney). They are both also very close (walking distance) to the CBD, beautiful Sydney harbour, royal botanic gardens - and a short drive from Bondi and Bronte beaches.

However, depending on your budget, the cost of housing in these suburbs can be quite high. Alternatively, the harbour-side suburbs of Rushcutters Bay, Edgecliff and Double Bay (neighbouring the above areas) are more affordable and still awesome (good public transport, good cafes..and beautiful parks/surrounds).

For the low down on rad places to eat, drink and have fun see: www.twothousand.com.au (though not specifically 'gay' I'd say most listings are queer friendly...also a good place to find out about cultural/arts events). Also check www.superfuture.com

As for gyms, there are a few good independent ones around the inner east (see city gym in Darlinghurst - though quite pricey or Hiscoes in Surry Hills - which is less expensive and a bit more relaxed in atmosphere) and of course, there are millions of fitness first clubs...

    Good luck with the move!

Oh and as for specific streets...

Oxford st = the once 'golden' gay mile, though a little worn out and seedy looking these days...full of nightclubs, sex shops and pubs. Fun for a trashy night out every now and then.

Crown and Bourke streets in Darlinghurst/Surry Hills have the highest concentration of good restaurants/shops/bars/galleries/shops...Stanley st in Darlinghurst is also pretty rad (delightful Italian and Japanese), along with Darlinghurst Rd and Victoria Street (also in Darlinghurst).

Oxford st, William st and the 'five ways' area (Glenmore rd intersection) in Paddington (another suburb east of Darlinghurst) is also cute...good food, cafes and fashion (that takes itself rather seriously..).

i agree if you are going to live in Sydney, the East is the best place to be, Just like Melbourne. There is a reasion you pay more to live in the East compared to the West. I love Rose Bay, and Manly.
