Bellies are Back!

Article in The New York Times:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/13/fashion/13POTBELLY.html?_r=2&partner=rss&emc=rss

    Key Quote:
“I sort of think the six-pack abs obsession got so prissy it stopped being masculine,” is how Aaron Hicklin, the editor of Out, explains the emergence of the Ralph Kramden. What once seemed young and hot, for gay and straight men alike, now seems passé. Like manscaping, spray-on tans and other metrosexual affectations, having a belly one can bounce quarters off suggests that you may have too much time on your hands.

“It’s not cool to be seen spending so much time fussing around about your body,” Mr. Hicklin said.

Having 6 pack abs or a trim body doesn't mean you have too much time on your hands. It means you might choose exercise over watching "Desparate Housewives".

There are millions of men out there who aren't prissy and who are in great shape and loving every minute of it. They scheduale time into their busy lives to keep fit, play sports and release those beneficial endorphins that make them feel happy. That's being fussy?

Men come in all shapes and sizes. So does masculinity.

Yeah, we've all seen the muscle queens who place way to much importance on a 6 pack, and it DOES look like they have to much time on their hands, but they are the minority.

As I get older, it may be harder to keep trim, but I would rather try than just giving up and getting overweight and conveniently labeling myself a "bear".

It's one man's opinion. I don't care if someone has a six pack or not. There are people out there called athletes, and we can't expect them to be running around with bellies because Aaron Hicklin from "Out" says it's too metro to have your abdominal muscles showing.

Well..it kinda depends on the guy the abs are attached to really. I belly on a guy working long hours and not getting time to hit the gym as often as he'd like is understandable....on the other hand, 6-pack abs on a gym-rat who has nothing better to do than work out and stare at himself in the mirror is well....bleh.

Whats hot is a successful guy who has a life, is financially secure and level headed and takes time to look after himself physically. But then, those guys don't really need "6-pack abs" to be considered a catch now...do they.

That being said...with no information on hand about a person, one's eyes usually gravitate to Mr. 6-pack abs first.

I love me some hairy men...and I love me some muscle bears!! but I dont think 6 packs will ever go out of "style" as they say. they are the true definition of someone being in shape...the envy of everyone around them.

Just because it seems the obesity rate is climbing and we might see less of it doesn't mean its out of style....this is the stupidest thing I have ever heard....

sounds like this guy has too much time on his hands and making excuses for himself...

    Hey

let fat rule the nation so we can have an implemented health care program. Fat is what causes most heart conditions and that is the number one killer and issue now. I work out less than 2 hours a day and watch zero TV.

I do not go to a gym!

I so agree...guts are not a turn on for me regardless of the personality they are attached too...I work hard at my job and find the time to work hard in the gym to keep myself healthy and the abs flat! Thats what I like...

    Right?

Why the hell should I or anyone care that an "expert" thinks a trend is going out of style. If/when I do something, I do it because I think it's cool, not because someone told me it was trendy. icon_rolleyes.gif

It's silly to be concerned with what's "back" according to media businesses which have to produce a certain amount of copy regularly in order to have an excuse to sell your eyeballs to advertisers.

That being said, bellies never "went", as far as I'm concerned. Due mainly to genetics but also a love of exercise I've always had a flat stomach, but I've rarely been attracted to men who don't have at least a little pudge going on. I can look at a guy and recognize or abstractly admire the effort and dedication it took him to get a 6-pack, but the look of the ripples themselves is actually a bit of a turn-off -- thought not the kind of thing that would be prohibitive.

Yeah...I dunno about the 'pot-belly' look - I mean, I've got a bit of a buddha belly but....it doesn't protrude past my chest.

I could understand the re-emergance of the 'barrel-chested man' - that implies he's muscular, relatively fit, and not a fat-ass - but a pot-belly is basically JUST fat.

I work out because it makes me feel good, not prissy. In fact I do not have too much time on my hands, thus why I get up at 4am to be to the gym by 5...I make the time, because my body and health are worth it.

It is a lifestyle choice...I choose to be in shape, and at 42 get mistaken for 32 thank you very much...and personally I don't want to die at the age of 51 like my father of pancreatic cancer. He did not take care of himself, and look where it got him.

So...this article in the NYT is insane...do we live in a body conscious world? Of course we do...but does that mean I'm going to get a belly so I can risk diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, or any other host of things that can happen from not taking care of yourself (obesity) because some dipshit said it's okay?

What percentage of Americans are obese? of that percentage how many are grossly, or morbidly? And he thinks me prissy because I want to stay in shape...well, f**k him and the horse that rode in on him! I'll take my eight pack any day over a belly kegger!

And I'll toss flowers on his coffin when he dies of a heat attack!
