We had a game tonight that went to 36 before the team I was subbing on won. I forgot what day it was after awhile.

Oh, I also took a ball to the side of the face, a stray bump from a newbie. He's cute, though.

We cap ours at 27! As for the ball in the face yeah I have been there. My team has 3 newbies and my captain is about 80 lbs. overweight! The best player does not show up much anymore. The only saving grace is that some nights we have only 6 or 7 players so I get to play a lot. I go as much for the social activity as the volleyball. I think we are in the bottom 10% of the standings. Oh well maybe the new year will be better (they change the teams).

ah yes, one of those nights! i played in a local open gym last night, they still play old-school rules for some reason. we were stuck at 12-7 for what seemed like an hour. sideout after sideout after sideout.

but my team was great =0), there's 4 of us who gel really well

We play rally points and unless the clock runs out of time, you have to win by two points. Neither team could manage to get that accomplished, though.

We won the gold medal tonight (mind you in the bottom division but who cares!). All the players showed up tonight, we won 5 out of 6. Everybody was excited at the end of the night. Now onto the christmas party Saturday to get our medals and celebrate.

Thanks, that is what I love about sports, you never know. I had quite an eclectic team. A retired stockbroker, a workaholic corporate lawyer who does mergers and acquisitions (and drives a Porsche), and at least 3 teachers. We got along very well which is nice. I will be on a new team in January. That season ends in May sometime.

It sounds like all the posters are in some kind of very organized League.
I play at the open gyms where we usually have a point cap of 23 and nearly all the gyms play rally scoring.
In our club, we have open gym play but limit the players to the first 24 so we make 4 teams of 6 players each, games are 17 points rally with a cap at 19.

Yeah, I have hit in the face with a hard driven ball and was blind in one eye for a day.... also had a tooth cap knocked off at a tournament.... I have hit a few guys in the face as well.... it's part of the game.

I played with my new Rec. team last night for the winter season. What a relief that this team seems pretty good. The captain is thin and wiry so he can move (my captain last year was at least 60 ibs. overweight), and there are only 2 weak players, one who has never played volleyball before, but at least he is young so he can move. I feel pretty good about our team's chances of doing well icon_smile.gif

Best of luck. We have a few on our team that are still fairly new and I've been trying to help. They are improving, especially with passing.

Thanks Timberoo, I usually try and help new players but it looks like there are others that can do that this year and I don't want to overwhelm the newbies with too many people telling them what to do.

The problem my team is going to have, and it is a problem for a lot of new teams, we do not call the ball enough. I am a shy person but on the volleyball I am very vocal about yelling "mine" or "help". Last night three players let the ball fall between them. I somewhat good-naturedly said "What game were you guys playing, football and you were having a huddle?" icon_wink.gif

I try to just be encouraging while we are in play and save the tips for before or after the game. If they go for it an mess up, I still say "good try, way to be there".

We just played in a NAGVA tournament in Irvine, CA last weekend and on Sunday during Double Eliminations, nearly all but the first match went to 3 games.... in the third game where there is no point cap it seemed to go on forever, but in the end, we triumphed! (Gold medal)

You must be good playing in a NAGVA tournament, congrats on the gold medal! I am a back-up for my partner this weekend in a Toronto tournament, I am getting to the point in my life where spending all weekend playing volleyball is too much. In my 30's it was no problem, but I am now nearing 50 and I want my weekends free!

    Thank you, jbedwards.

Before starting volleyball and age 47, I had been playing tennis since early childhood and I took college classes to learn volleyball which paid off. icon_smile.gif

Toronto is a favorite North American city to me and many of my Television shows I shoot (TV Cameraman/dp) are from Toronto based clients like" Holmes on Homes"

Wow that is pretty amazing starting volleyball at 47. Tennis would be a great help especially with the hand eye co-ordination. I play tennis but I am better at volleyball!

    Take care
