ADOPTING THAT SPECIAL DOG OR CAT

I had an event this week that still is "yanking" at my soul.... that is the adoption of a new beagle.

There had been some discussion between my bf and I about adopting another beagle down the line in several years. I love my beagles, but you know when you shouldn't go overboard. 2 beagles have been enough. Both were given to me.. Buddy, as a very young 1 year old... 7 years ago and then Mia about 2.5 years ago....

I've always known I'd want to adopt another beagle from a shelter or
"rescue" situation where he or she didn't have a home...

Then earlier this week I happened upon "Petfinder" and was just crusing a few of the dogs and cats... then I stopped abruptly...

    http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=14325759

I'm not sure what it was that caught my eye about this little guy... maybe he reminds me of Buddy at that age. I made an inquiry and the little guy had just been brought in the day before from another shelter. Later that day, however, I got this e-mail.....

"Chris - I have a pending local adoption on Skip and should know for sure by the end of the day tomorrow (husband met him and wants him but wants his wife to see him first). If that falls through I would certainly love to consider you for his adoption, since I know whomever you select will have a wonderful life. I will contact you again as soon as I know his status!"

Disappointed, but I realize that there are so many little animals in need of a home, it shouldn't matter what they look like... the important thing is, are you willing to take the responsibility to give them a good, safe home.
I'm sure the little guy I noticed will have one. I'll adopt one eventually.
Would you adopt a needy animal if asked?

OMG, Chris. He is such a little cutie. I'm such a light touch that I nearly didn't visit the link for fear I'd want to adopt him!

For me, I'd like to have multiple dogs. The primary reason we don't have more is that we live in a rental apartment. There is no backyard and we both work full time. We do hope to eventually own a ground floor condo with a backyard and would probably adopt another dog, maybe two. Beyond that, my job is high stress and, at times, long hours, which leaves BF as the primary caretaker for April. So, either I would need a less life-consuming job, or Chris would have to be willing to take on the additional responsibility.

Like you, the thought that there are all these dogs (and other animals) in the world who need homes is upsetting to me. I think if I won the lottery, I'd have a menagerie. I hope Skip finds a good home, if not with you, than with this other couple who are interested in him.

I would love to take in a shelter dog... but my condo association restricts dogs in the building icon_sad.gif

I want to bring home every animal I see, so I know how you feel.

When I was a kid I could have any pets I wanted to own as long as I took care of them. My mother is the world's most anal-retentive housekeeper, so that meant that I really had to lavish a lot of attention on my pets. I had a dog, a cat, some rabbits, some chinchillas, guinea pigs, fresh water fish, salt water fish, lizards, snakes, hamsters, gerbils, canaries, budgies, cockatiels, etc. They weren't exactly all mine because my brothers and sisters would also bring things home, but I was the one who was taking care of them most of the time. A lot of the time we were bringing home pets that our friends weren't taking care of.

At the moment I have two cats, and I've managed to avoid turning my present home into a zoo -- although I was online looking at local bird breeders this morning. I can't even go to the local humane society shelter because I feel horrible for not bringing something home every time I visit.

The only hairy thing I need to bring home at the moment is a boyfriend. Preferably one who can clean his own cage.

I cannot even walk into the shelters or I would have them all at my house. I am such softy when it comes to animals. Everyone of the animals there look so sad and I just want to take them home.

I grew up with 3 cats. They're all old and senile now, but still lovable.

My bf REALLY wants a cat. When we move into an apartment one day, he doesn't know this yet, but I plan on getting him one from a shelter. Possibly 2, if they're litter mates. I can;t wait for that day to come...

TOTALLY AWESOME!!!! Maybe it is meant to be. I also located my current dog through petfinders.com. My best friend was looking for an allergy friendly purebreed and I happened to find a cute little Shi Ztu rugrat on petfinders that he thought was adorable. He picked up the puppy and they lived happily ever after. The woman with K911 where my friend found his dog also let my friend know there would be a Lhasa Apso in the shelter in the next couple of weeks. My friend decided to go meet the Lhasa Apso as well and he brought me along with him. For me it was love at first sight, and she wanted nothing to do with me! I loved all that attitude coming from one spunky little pup so of course I just had to give her a home.

I think petfinders is the best resource out there to adopt a dog, cat, bird, etc. The Humane Society uses this site to place their animals and most well established animal rescue organizations do as well. You can also become a FOSTER PARENT with some of these agencies and care for the animal until it has found a permanent home.

I think you should go for it. I don't think this dog could possibly have a better home.

What a nice post to read about! I love animals and would take in every stray that I had room for. I can't go into the shelters or even the petsmart without spending ample amounts of time looking at all the dogs and cats. If they have puppies and kittens its even harder to get me outta there. The last house I lived in was on 2 acres with a farm behind me. I had all kinds of outdoor cats that I fed and a few dogs that came by too. I have a soft spot in my heart and soul for our furry four legged friends. I hope you get to get your beagle HndsmKansan. From the sounds of your posts he will surely be blessed with lots of love. icon_biggrin.gif

Animal lover here as well - have adopted 3 cats, and had dogs before.
I relate to that feeling, it is difficult to run into a shelter/site and stay indifferent.
    Good luck whatever you decide.

In theory I would do it in a heartbeat (I'm actually really wanting a puppy) but I live in an apartment with no balcony, and three nights a week I don't get home till after 7:30pm and one day a week I'm out all day, so I feel like it would be selfish to get a dog.

I am so happy for you. I am so glad that you listened to me and emailed about him. I am even happier for the little guy because I know he will get a great home and have two friends to play with. icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

I cannot wait to see new dog pictures with your sexy body. Make room on the bed for another bed buddy. Will there be room for me??? icon_wink.gificon_redface.gif

I submitted preliminary paperwork for Skip's adoption. I've never adopted a dog before in this way, but I hope I'll have the opportunity to see him next weekend.
