Staying in great shape for older guys

    Hey lads. I notice heaps of older guys here who are still hot and haven't "gone to seed" as they say.
    What I'm wondering is if I keep dedicated to my workout and fitness in general, will I stay in good shape or do I need to increase my efforts the older I get?

    cronk- the only reason i started working out in 1983 was because, as a gay man, I knew that my middle ages would be "the end times" in the gay culture, and I was determined to stay buff and built into my 40's and 50's. Fortunetly I loved lifting and cardio so it hasnt been any sort of sacrifice and my disciplined regime came easily because my favorite time of every day is when Im hooked up to my IPOD and in my own world lifting heavy.
    It hasnt gotten tougher as I have gotten older. maybe losing a few extra fat pounds over the years has gotten to be a slower process but Ive kept my metabolism high and Im never far off of where I want to be physique and weight-wise. The only tough part comes if you realize at the age of 35 or older that you suddenly might need to start going to the gym and you have no routine or gym habits in place. Its tougher to get them in place and going well the older you get. The actual exercising has actually gotten easier for me.
    IN `1983 I was 24 yrs old, 155 lbs @ 15% bodyfat. Now at 48 Im 209 lbs @10% bodyfat.All my dietary and nutritional routines and habits have been in place for yesrs so "Moderation" has been my life for a long time now- no crazy excessive diets for me and if I miss the gym more than a few times a month I start to lose my mind a little.All the tough parts of staying in shape and looking good are based in the habits you estabilsh early on. The working out part is the easy part. So for me, NO, it hasnt gotten tougher over the years. Just the opposite as a matter of fact. And I look pretty much the way I was hoping to look in my 40's after these past 24 yrs of working out.Starting early is the key.

    I really never put any effort into it until, at 39, I found myself single again after a 7.5 year relationship. Since then I have dropped 30 pounds, changed my eating habits and integrated fitness into my life. I hyave never felt better and I look better naked than I have in yers, maybe ever! It is now a way of life. The best thing I ever did was hire a trainer for 5 weeks to show me how to workout properly; the second best thing I did was buy inline skates - escellent cardio!

    Maintenance is much easier than improvement, Cronk, and judging from how you look now, if you don't veer too far from the great shape you're in you won't have a problem. I was fat at 39 and never entered a gym until the day after my 40th b-day, so I'm here to say one can make improvements at anytime, but I wish I'd don't it when I had more natural growth hormone circulating in my system. The secret is just varying your workouts enough to keep your muscles shocked and the boredom at bay.

    Just keep at it. I have had a committment to fitness since the mid 1970s. Thus, it's easy to maintain it.

    I had so many "counter-examples" of guys of my age (mostly straight, by the way) that look far older than me, because they let themselves get overweight, have had a history of smoking, don't groom themselves, don't take care of their skin.

    In terms of body shape, one of the reasons that I have, since 2000, taken up weight training, and still keep running a lot, was to maintain tone, and strength in my upper body...and it's worked.

    I'll never look 30...but I still fool people who have the "counter-examples" all around them.

    By the way,it's easy to do. As mentioned on another Forum thread...it's addictive...and fun...even if it is work.

    Hey Cronk, I agree with Svengali, that maintenance is the easy part... I have been lifting on and off for almost 35 years, there have been times of heavy lifting and real intense training, then times of slacking off... sometimes life just gets in the way... but once you have established the nerve pathways of exercise, and your muscle adapt to training, it is always easier to "get back" after a lapse... also, probably the most important aspect of "lifting for life" and being healthy is to avoid doing stupid things and getting injured. Listen to your body, respect the pain barrier, and tend to your injuries... usually "rest is best" At this point, I have two bad shoulders, torn rotator cuffs and did not attend to them when i was younger.... 20 years later, I tore them bad, they haunt me everyday, had one repaired, the surgery was great, the recovery was awful, and then I tore it again a year later...never had the second one done and now both torn again... too much scare tissue... respect your shoulders.... the most important part of your body if you want to be a built guy and work out!

    lol, are you calling us old guys lads? "Steady as (s)he goes." I think if you make fitness a life-time goal you won't have anything to worry about. Monitor yourself .. everyone is different. You may have to compensate in some ways as you age, but you don't "get old" overnight.

    Oh, I have been at it 20 years. In 10 years you will hear me say I have been at it 30 years barring any major health problems .. like death! lol

    I actually lift less weight, more frequently....and I think I am staying in good shape :)

    I'm starting to see alot of men my age giving up and like you say "going to seed"
    ...It kind of makes me sad in a way
    that they aren't taking care of themselves

    we only have one go around on this earth here
    might as well make it the best we can

    Google on anti-aging.

    If you're over 28, keeping your DHEA, GH, testosterone, and estrogen levels at normal to high normal can greatly influence the aging process, your sense of well being and happiness, your fitness level, and protect you against aging diseases.

    Don't believe anti-androgen / anti-gh propaganda. It's a big business, with great results, which medical community is going to milk it for what they can, but, any geriatric doctor can give you a long list of benefits of anti-aging therapy.

    I was recently having lunch w/ my best gal-pal and we were talking with excitement about 40, and I stated that 40 was going to have to be the new 30, and then she one up'd me and stated:
    " NO, 40 is going to be the new 20 !". I'm stickin' to that.
    My own personal motto is : THINGS ALWAYS GET BETTER.
    I apply that to EVERYTHING.

    I have to agree with GunnerMuscle,
    I know I have kept physically fit in some way or other all my adult life - more accurately, since my teens, with a couple of blips scattered in there somewhere...
    I've observed older guys in their 40's/50's just venturing into exercise and really feel for them - it's much harder to regain than maintain...
    Personally, I do regular workouts - 5/6 days per week, but only work out for an hour/hour and 1/4 maybe...as I'm not into huge bulk, I go for the more toned muscular look so my weights get to a certain point and then it's maintenance...I think I work smarter in the gym now, rather than harder...by reading and observing who looks good and what they do to achieve their goal...
    The scene is on looks, at first, I understand that, but I also exercise for myself - to feel good and as a buffer for work related issues - and when you're feeling good about yourself, the sex is great!

    Thanks lads (and yes, I still think of us as lads!)

    I have enjoyed sports and working out and keeping in good shape, mainly for my own health and well being and happiness, not for others.

    I will look into those anti-aging things mentioned. Thanks for all the advice.

    I feel much better about how I look and feel now than I did in my 20s. I've seen pics of me from back then and *I* wouldn't do me... icon_biggrin.gif

    Just about says it!

    At 60, I'm still training because I like the things I do and the way I feel. It's not harder (though recovery takes a bit longer after a hard workout), but it is a bit slower. And without competition, I find the distractions are distractinger...

    But you train or workout because you love it - t's good to have a sport or activity that gives you pleasure, because that makes it something you look forward to and enjoy. The benefits simply follow along.

    I can only speak for myself, but I think it's actually easier staying in shape now because I made a commitment to health & fitness in my life at an early age (maybe 19/20 years old) and the shape I am in today represents 30 years of staying on a routine. Now it's just basically maintenance, and I can get by working out less as long as I do at least something physical -- cardio, weights, biking, spin class, racquetball, hiking, etc -- 4 or 5 times a week. There really is no way to stay fit and in shape without putting in the time and commitment to an exercise and proper diet regimen, but the payoff is health & fitness well into your 50's, 60's and beyond. It's never too late to start, but you can't expect immediate results. It takes time and commitment.

    That's interesting, and exactly what two of the top Swedes in cross-country told me: that after a certain point they'd done all the ground work, and to stay on top was really not much more than maintenance.

    Glad we got those habits young!

    I can go two months without weight training and basically look the same. I think it is because of the "routine" I have been on since I was in my 20's. I keep a pretty good diet.

    Although I agree with most of what's been said, I have to disagree in part.

    Yes, if you have been in shape your whole life, it doesn't get any harder as you get older. It may even get easier, because you are conditioned, you have a routine, and you are smarter and more experienced. In other words, you know your body better as you get older.

    And yes, you can improve at any age, whatever your condition. I may not be one of the hotter guys here, but I get ever-so-slightly better every year.

    By contrast, if you didn't take care of yourself when you were younger, everything starts to fall apart the day you turn 30. You will put on ten pounds of body fat overnight, start to experience aches and pains, and have to work much harder to stay the same.

    Seriously, I found it easy dropping 60 lbs and getting in serious shape fast when I was about 40, but when I had to do it again at about 50 it was much, much harder because I didn't heal from injuries as quickly, the skin around my midsection wasn't as resilient, I didn't have the stamina to train lift mornings and swim evenings with intensity anymore and losing that last ten pounds took that much more effort. The end result has been fantastic in that I'm in the best shape of my life now and keep getting better, but I'll never look or feel 22 again, even from the neck down like a lot of guys in their fifties who've trained consistently for years do, as I did at 40. I'm assuming that maintaining will be harder now than then as well, but I haven't crossed that bridge yet - still improving.
