So I've decided to buck the trend once again when it comes to what is fashionable among men, especially gay men, and grow my hair out to a length of more than ten inches.

Once it reaches past that ten inch mark, i will braid it up, hack it off, fill out a form and send the hair to Lock Of Love (not Locks For Love like the title says... sorry). Once they recieve the hair they will then use it to create part of a wig for a child who is being treated for cancer.

The only real reason that i am putting this in a forum post is to get it in writing, put it out into the universe, and as a way to make a public contract with myself.

    Thanx for reading icon_smile.gif

I think "Locks" is a great idea and only had admiration for Ann Curry ("Today Show") when she had her hair cut a year or two ago for that program.
It really does help people who have had cancer and have enough of an issue just dealing with their physical illness.

I expect that Rocco will put a picture of himself in his profile to show the look.. prior to the "whacking" for the charity.........icon_smile.gif

OH yeah... i will be posting regular pics of the hair as it grows, and no doubt frustrates me, makes me super hot (temp wise), is in all these "inbetween" phases that can't be styled... etc etc etc

I can't wait to see the looks on guys faces when they ask me why my hair is long. Long hair on guys is not popular in these parts of the gay world. Oh well!

    Now Rocco.....

I would expect you to be a trend setter... make it "fashionable" to wear your hair longer (and to add to public awareness in the gay community with any gay publications there in Ohio)...

I'll be disappointed if you don't....

    That's great RS,

I did that myself one year it took me two years to do it. I was prompted to do it after loosing a young cousin of mine and the wig that they gay her to wear was just awful!

At the time they did not really have wig for kids or growns-up for people of color.

Nothing racist about it they just did not have it.
So I'm not jumping on that band wagon just staing a fact.

Who knew a couple of years later it would be falling out on it's own...LOL!

It's a wonderful thing that you are doing and it is a very worthy cause...man!icon_smile.gif

    Thanks guys!!!!

    1. my hair grows MUTANT fast... and it's at 4 1/12 inches now on top.

    2. I've actually already been asked if it will effect my stripping and stuff cause guys don't like it. I figure not so much because i will certainly tell everyone about it! I am always one for educating people, like when i do benefit shows or donate tips and things, i make sure everyone knows. Same thing with my tattoos in honor of those who live with cystic fibrosis etc etc etc

My best friend is ALSO going to do it now! She is the director of Step Up 4 A Cure www.myspace.com/stepup4acure and we are planning on going for the chop at the end of next years concert!!!!!

Lock of Love is not a good organization. There are hidden fees that no one hears about. My neighboor is a hair stylist, who specializes in in working with people who have lost hair, so she makes many wigs and hair extentions from real hair.
After she found out about Lock of Love, she start Hope Hairloss, a completely free oganization that provides wigs to children with cancer. I would just say, research Lock of Love and other organizations that are similar before you donate.

I'm not one to jump into anything lightly. When i get it in my head to do something i do a HUGE amount of research. So much that people sometimes think i become completely obsessed with the idea.

When it comes to the charity work i do and work with i take that a step further. In this instance i have actually spoken with individuals who have worked with them, as well as another charity called Adventures For Wish Kids (of which several volunteer families have donated to Locks... and some Adventures families have recieved wigs and such from Locks).

The fiscal information is reported on the Locks website, and juishe, you are the first to say anything negative about the charity. Even watch groups praise them.

Grow it closer to 12", just to be sure. I had a friend do this and he cut it off slightly shorter than they required. They couldn't accept it. All that work for nothing!

Yeah i'm gonna grow it to a foot. They actually just changed there stance on length and will accept shorter lengths now. These they sell to offset administrative costs and such.

Man I want to commend you for doing something so amazing.

My daughter doesn't have cancer but she has a disease called allopecia. At the age of 11 she lost all of her hair and has been bald ever since. You can only imagine the ridicule that she has been through from her peers. Good wigs are very expensive and they really don't last that long.

Everytime you start to get a little tired of growing your hair out and it is driving you nuts, just try and remember how lucky most of us are to be able to grow hair.

Your unselfishness means a lot to so many people. Good for you! This is the type of thing that truly makes a man sexy!

    Peace

I've seen a few more guys here (gay ones) growing out their hair, so more power to you.

At least you have hair to grow on your head. icon_biggrin.gif

As an uncle of a girl with leukaemia, and knowing how upset she was losing her hair, I think what you are doing is just great. Well done Rocco.

I think what you are doing is great, and it is even better that you are doing the research. I have not done the research, I was just letting you know what I was told about them. If they check out than that is great.

So... my hair is LONG now... and starting to get on my nerves, but hey... it's very worth it...

ON TOP OF THAT... It's time for me to begin my fundraising blitz for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Great Strides charity walk! Last year I managed to raise over $1,000 for the event and could not have been more proud! Further more I was able to cross the finish line with the incomparable Jeri Dickey, who is the mother of 2 CF kids, and a woman I call my best friend! I certainly hope to exceed that goal this year and make an even stronger showing, arm in arm with Mrs. Dickey one more time… but… I need your help!

Please visit http://www.cff.org/Great_Strides/AlexanderChang and help make Great Strides to a better quality of life, and a cure, for the kids and families and friend affected by cystic Fibrosis!

Thanx for taking a moment to read this, and even if you are just a little touched, or take a moment to learn about the condition of cystic fibrosis, you've become a better you, and helped me become a better me!

"CF sucks... the air right outta your lungs!"

Me too, that's exactly what I'm doing. Of course I'm trying to make it tasteful and look good while it's still at length that flatters my facial structure, but after that I'm with you: pony tails, braids and maybe a Japanese Samurai bun, LOL. After that, It's all going, but maybe after after 14 inches. Just incase I want more to work with after all is said, donated and done. You rock StripperRocco!
