Same problem with him and others like him up here. We've had some success getting tours canceled etc, but the catch is that these artists claim it's art and not really advocating murder.

However, if a white group came up with lyrics advocating the murder of black people, or a men's group singing that women should be killed....

There actually is a group advocating such a thing. ?Max Resist?
They were featured in a Dateline Special a good while ago. There are many others out there like this one. (I'm assuming.)

i usually can't stand reggae, but i love the song 'wanna be loved'. used to blast it in my car in high school. when i heard about buju's yucky lyrics i was surprised and saddened. but i've been charlie browned a lot; i'm gay.

i say let him get up there and make an ass of himself. the people buying buju tickets/ records should be the ones to condone or condemn his lyrics.

Thanks guys! And you will be happy to hear that it worked.

YEAH!!! We got the rest of the show canceled now!

    Quote:
We did it! Together we canceled the “murder music” tour!

Less than 24 hours after the Center encouraged the public to demand that AEG Live, Goldenvoice and Live Nation cancel their nationwide concert tour by “faggots have to die” singer Buju Banton, including a show at L.A.’s Nokia Club, they complied; you can read more on Variety, Entertainment Weekly and Pollstar's websites.

It’s outrageous that it was even necessary for us to pressure these companies to cancel shows by an artist whose lyrics blatantly promote violent attacks on LGBT people; this is a singer who has recorded such appalling lyrics as, “Anytime Buju Banton come, faggots get up and run … they have to die.” He sings that he will shoot them in the head or “burn them up bad.”

These companies would never have booked a singer whose lyrics glorified the murder of any other group of people, and we joined together to send them a crystal clear message that singers who promote violence against any group should never be given a stage on which to perform!

Hundreds of you sent this message by calling or e-mailing the presidents of the companies, signing our online petition, joining the related Facebook group and encouraged your friends to do the same.

Our quick success is a tribute to the power of the LGBT community to join together and let our voice be heard!

OMG That's so awesome that you all got the show cancelled. I clicked the link and was like "Where do I sign??? =$" Then scrolled down here and saw you guys did it. CONGRATS! That man should be banned from doing any music in front of anyone. Anything that promotes murder or hatred is not what we are on this planet for.

Personally, I love reggae, but unfortunately, this homophobia is rampant in the Caribbean.... I think we should go as far as boycotting Red Stripe beer, and Jamaican tourism.

    [quote]
In response to the appalling Grammy nomination for Buju Banton, a performer whose music promotes the violent murder of LGBT people, L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center Chief Public Affairs Officer Jim Key issued the following statement:

“We’re shocked that Buju Banton, a singer with a long record of performing a song that glorifies the murder of gay people, would be honored with a Grammy nomination, regardless of the artistic merit of any of his work.

Throughout his career, Banton has performed music that promotes a culture of violence against lesbian and gay people; he sings in “Boom, Bye Bye” that “faggots get up and run” when he comes, that “they have to die,” and that he will shoot them in the head or “burn them up bad.” He is completely unrepentant, refuses to stop performing the song, and recently said, “There is no end to the war between me and faggots.”

Banton’s music has helped foster such an anti-gay culture in his home country of Jamaica—where several prominent gay activists and many other LGBT people have been murdered—that Time magazine recently asked, ‘Is Jamaica the most homophobic place on Earth?’ Banton himself was charged with a violent anti-gay hate crime.

It’s an affront to LGBT people, and to all fair-minded people around the world, that Buju Banton was even nominated. We certainly hope the members of the Recording Academy will not bestow the prestigious honor of a Grammy on someone whose music promotes murder.”
