Sudan's Lubna Hussein Convicted for Wearing Trousers

Brief: Lubna Hussein was charged, along with thirteen other women, of wearing pants. She faced a $200 fine and forty lashes, but stood up to the regime and is now choosing prison rather than paying the fine with which she was eventually sentenced. She also rejected the regime's attempts at brushing her case under the carpet by offering her a pardon.

    ***
Please, can we, as a species, get rid of fucking stupid laws like this?

Sentenced under Shar'ia for wearing pants? Where the fuck does the Islamic deity / Allah condemn pants-wearing women and why do the people governing give a shit to something so inane?

*grumbles over the foolishness of the species of which he is himself a part*

I have been to a few countries, I have lived under conditions like that, and i know what the cause is. The God disease. That is it.

PS: I like your John Lenon pick better. The one with the purple T. That would make a better main pic.

If that were the crime, her prosecutor / judge / and executor would have been a fashion designer or guru (preferably Tim Gunn), the lashes would be with a feathered boa, and the fine would be in Wintouropoly money.

Alas, hers was not a crime of fashion, but an actual crime according to Sudanese law.

I look forward to when Sudanese culture catches up to the pantsuit craze.

I am a believer who is constantly pissed off when I see faith taken by the most extreme voices of any faith and bastardized. On the other hand, I can no more tell a sovereign country how to run themselves anymore than I could force a country to speak my language when I am visiting there. When I saw this on the new, I just shook my head because while this may be the only item we have seen on the news, it is not the only time this has happened. There will always be the small minded that are always the loudest voices who fight a culture's evolution kicking and screaming. The real shame is that people will have to die and be discriminated against before a culture advances itself.

"Before a culture advances"... That is an oxymoron. Culture is a barrier to enhancement. Culture is limiting. Culture = A repetitious and predictable way of life. Religion is enveloped in culture and within them lay the problem. I refer to the struggle between the fear of the unknown and the need to discover. Culture is assuring, since it is structured, it is a routine. On the other hand discovery with all its uncertainties is the only way forward.

Religion is a choice! She could always become a Mormon, and then her dress has to go below her knees. If I had my way women everywhere would be band from wearing male attire.

Oh please, even in places like Saudi Arabia, women wear not only pants but shorts! Sure they might not be allowed to drive cars there but apparently they can drive airplanes (as there is a famous SA female pilot who does). Such laws go way beyond religion and any misguided sense of security it offers to citizens. They give off the notion of being backward and that evolution is not welcomed into the society when, by religion, advancement should be favored.

A simple example would be the fact that men are allowed to wear eye liner and have long hair (as was done in the past) in Islam but due to the inaccurate implications attached to that nowadays many men choose not to.

I would say that this law is more culturally inclined than religiously.

Jeans or any sort of trousers are kind of revealing as they say. There are people in the US that mind wearing any sort of trousers as well. The guy who said that women wear shorts in Saudi' Arabia is right but they could only do that indoors or in their private compounds.

As seaSon just said that it's coming soon to an European country near you is absolutely right. I think the first country will be France. I don't know what Europeans are thinking when inviting such barbaric people into their country and giving out their citizenship. I personally know many shameful Muslims who were born in France and have a great life there but still curse at their own country for their lifestyle and culture etc.. They don't see as what luxury and comfort their nation has given to them.

Cant believe Europeans didn't learn anything from what happened to Lebanon some time ago.

The God Disease, good one. I can guarun-damn-tee you that the fundie "Christians" in America would have all women running around in public dressed like the Amish if they thought they could get away with it. Also not allow them to work, stone gays in the street, and other delightful Old Testament goodies...

Weelll... I don’t know about the comfort and luxury in Europe. Yes they live better lives than they would in their own courtiers but most of the Muslims that happen to be a problem in France and England are somehow related to small pockets of minorities that live in poverty.

You do have some Muslims in the USA that maybe a unhappy, but they are a very small group and are never going to be a problem like they are in Europe. Majority of Muslims in America are thriving, flourishing and have just too much to lose. Infect the larger part of the Muslim groups in USA are nationalists.

When people have money, they will be less religious, less desperate, less violent.

Another major difference is the great American propaganda. There is no getting away with that. Muslims, mainly middle easterners that come to the USA lose control of their siblings in no time. This country makes ppl American. Before you know it their children don’t pray, can speak their mother tongue, start to think their own culture is weird, and want to chase the American dream.

This is all possible thanks to Hollywood, TV, Video games, Rock and roll, product placements, commercials, etc.

Bottom line: give people toys, homes, cars, guns, money, sex and you have a happy family.

What a cry baby. If you don't like what someone says grow some balls and debate him. Call him out. If you really can't stand someone - ignore him.

jusTom> islam is a religion, its a religion that 99 % of the terrorists in the world belong to

sxydrkhair> If 99% of Muslims are terrorists....

jusTom> you totaly misunderstood me dont be a demagog

sxydrkhair> So "its"... you are referring to "Islam" my dear.

Which, of course, misses the point.

There is, of course, a tremendous logical difference between saying:

    99% of terrorists are Muslim
    and
    99% of Muslims are terrorists

To conflate one for the other is either a sign that someone is a demagog (who thrives on attacking straw men) or that they have cognitive disabilities.

SinnernSaint> YOU WILL BE REPORTED FOR YOUR IGNORANT STATEMENTS

The validity of the statement (which is a figure of speech that needn't be taken literally) is open to debate, but to "report" someone for making such a statement (even IF, as alleged, it is "ignorant") is silly. One could argue that it is ignorant to report someone for such and thus that you should be reported (as should be the person reporting you....). I'm sure the people running RJ have better things to do than babysit ("mommy, Tommy said something I think is ignorant. Can you punish him so I can 'win' without having to debate him?").
