Do you prefer to go to the gym with friends or workout partners or alone?

I always try to avoid going to a gym where too many of my friends or acquaintances go. I find that I end up socializing rather than actually working out. The fact that my old gym had tons of gays didn't help matters either.

But I changed gyms recently, and one of my former coworkers and I have been going to work out together. We're not really on the same page all the time, but we split up maybe about halfway through or on whatever parts we need to. It's the first time I've actually ever had a decent workout partner arrangement with someone.

Do most of you guys find working out with someone else a help or a distraction/hindrance?

I go alone. I use equipment that requires no spotting, so any technical help I need I get from the staff. I prefer to go at my own pace, sometimes slow, sometimes faster, unencumbered by having someone along who has his own workout agenda.

At the same time, sometimes I have enjoyed a friend being around, provided he does his thing and I do mine. Meeting up afterwards in the gang shower and steam room or sauna can be nice, if our timing works out. Then we can have a quiet little chat in the nude, the way men bond best. icon_biggrin.gif

I go to the gym to get out of my house where I do most of my work. I allow myself ample time to socialize, and I guess it's become the center of my social life. I do teach a bunch of fitness classes, too, so I can't go without working out. Still, that means I should be spending one hour there instead of three hours every time I go.

I go alone. I think it's kinda hard to workout with someone, if you're both doing a different routine and working on different body parts. Also, the socializing aspect too. Sometimes it's hard not to have extended conversations.

Overall, I think working out alone has worked for me. I tend to focus better. And I get through my workouts faster. If I ever need a spot, I just ask someone.

A friend and I always workout together. Some days I don't feel like working out , but he drags my ass over there. lol I find that having a friend to wort out with keeps me motivated, otherwise, it would be too easy for me to skip.

I really really would like a workout partner. I've had one before and it just works better that way for me. My old partner was always down to business so that helped. We didn't speak until our routines were over. Having a spotter whenever I needed it really helped me push myself to the max. Plus watching each others growth and progress was a motivating factor. Hopefully I can find another dedicated partner like that in the future.

I have to work out alone. I have my MP3 playlists that I need to listen to in order to work out the best, and I find that if I don't have the headphones on, I can't work out as hard.

I prefer to go alone. If I was with friends, I would probably spend more time socializing, instead of working out. So I just go in solo, put on my ipod and go into my own little world!

alone, get too distracted and/or frustrated when working out with others. But don't mind if i'm taking someone to train them and already had my workout.

RIght now, I'm going alone. When I lived elsewhere, I had a workout partner, and really liked it. I'd like to find one here.

I usually prefer working out alone. The only time I prefer a workout partner is when I need a spotter for bench press.

I agree, the gym is my sanctuary and it's all about me. I used to go to the predominantly gay gyms in my area and it was nice to see my friends and familiar faces, but after a while, I felt like I just couldn't get away from them. None of my friends go to my current gym and it's nice to put on my headphones and do my thing.

I prefer working out alone. Having a workout partner is not my schtick. But watching movies, now I like doing that with a few people.

I like to work out alone, but it would be nice to go with someone and just work out at the same time, just not together. I like doing my own thing you know?

Alone. It's hard working out with someone else when all they're really doing is cruising. I'm there to workout and make personal gains...not to socialize.
