What did Jesus teach that was so offensive that it brought about a demand for his death by the people before the Roman govenor?

The one thing that people hold against Christianity, is the teaching of Jesus that he is the world's only Savior. Many have difficulty stomaching this teaching of Jesus that apart from him, there is no divine forgiveness of sin, no promise of eternal life, and no room in God's heavenly mansion. It is this teaching of Jesus that led the people before the Roman govenor to demand that he be put to death.

It is natural for us to convince ourselves that many paths lead to heaven and that it is not absolutely necessary to know and trust in Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

But when Christians confess that Jesus is this world's only Savior--that without faith in him there is no hope of eternal life--they are not conjuring up that confession out of thin air. Instead, they are simply repeating what Jesus himself taught and confessed. It is Jesus who said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). When Christians proclaim that Jesus is the only way to heaven, they are not being self-congratulatory. Instead, they are simply repeating what Jesus taught and echoing the Spirit-inspired proclamation of the apostle Peter, who boldly declared, "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12) For Christians to believe and confess something other than what Jesus taught would be dishonest at best and eternally destructive at worst.

So why did Jesus claim this distinctive title, Savior of all nations, which brought about a demand for his death by crucifixion? That honor stems from his unique relationship with God. Jesus is God's one and only Son (John 1:14, 18; 3:16) and one with his Father (John 10:30). Christians confess this truth when they confess in the Nicene Creed that Jesus is "God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father." Only Jesus could have honestly said what he did in John chapter 5, declaring himself God's one and only Son.

That's why Christians are mocked and why many would like to see them put to death in the same torturous manner that Jesus was. Many hate Christians because of this confession; they hated Jesus, too. (John 5:1). But it is this very confession by which we are saved now and for eternity! (Romans 10:10-13).

Jesus predicted as much when he told his disciples, "They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me. He who hates me hates my Father as well" (John 15:21,23). Their hatred for Jesus and his message of free forgiveness finally drove them to nail him, God himself, to a cross of shame.

But Jesus rose victorious and "declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection" (Romans 1:4) And that's why Jesus says the only road to heaven passes through him, because he says apart from him, there is no God.

I think Dominic Crossan's Who Killed Jesus? is a fascinating and well researched book on the topic.

You can ask the same thing about gays, innocent women burned as witches, infidels, and heretics to the Christian churches.

    Everything comes full circle, eh?

G_Force is absolutely right in his opening post, and I back him all the way.
Lostboy misses the point here. Yes, the Jews did cry out to Pontius Pilate that
"WE HAVE NO KING BUT CAESAR!" (John 19:12-16)
But were the Jews in that day in love with the Roman Emperor? Definately not, neither were they devoted to the rule of Pilate. In fact Matthew wrote that it was from envy that the Jews delivered Jesus to Pilate - Matt 27:1, not political uprising, although the Jews used that excuse to cover their true feelings.
Matthew himself was disliked by the Jews because he "sucked up" to the Romans, collecting taxes on their behalf. (Matt 9:9-13).
Less than forty years later, these same Jews rebelled against Roman rule, and as a result, the Romans lauched a siege under General Titus, Jerusalem and its Temple destroyed and the Jews themselves were to be dispersed right across the world for the next 1,900 years.
So why did the Jews deliver Jesus to Pilate?
Because he exposed their sin wrapped in religious hypocrisy, and declared himself as their Messiah and declared to everyone who responded to his invitation to come to him will receive eternal life, a statement only the Messiah could make.

Sedative's image of the coiling snake has, perhaps unwittingly, brought out another Biblical truth. All around the world, the snake is an important religious symbol. It has an important place in Shamanism, Witchcraft, Voodoo, Devil worship and the occult in general.
But why a snake? Why not a more attractive animal like a prancing horse, or a sprinting cheetah?
Because Adam and Eve were deceived by Lucifer who spoke to them through a snake. That is still history, despite that it hadn't taken place in our own lives.
    Or has it?
Lucifer's tact was to draw them away from their Creator by offering WISDOM - the knowledge of good and evil, to make them wise and for themselves to become like God.
We see this today in all its glory. It's called Evolution - a branch of the occult.
The Bible is really true after all, and Sedative had just proved it, along with Webster 666 - the Number of the Beast (Antichrist).

He certainly is full of himself, which is the fullness of the deity. You can't be any fuller than that. That's why he was able to raise himself from the dead and will raise all of us from the dead, too, on the Last Day.

Colossians 2:9 "For in Christ all the fullness of the deity lives in bodily form."

I agree, the Romans and Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent of any wrong doing because Pilate publicy came before the Jews and declared, "I find no basis for a charge against him." But Pilate issued the death sentence anyways even though he found him innocent because he was afraid of the riot the Jews may have caused, if he released Jesus and he was afraid he might lose his position as Roman govenor. It was the greatest miscarriage of justice ever in the history of the world, but God used this miscarriage of justice to save the whole world.--"Amazing Grace"
