To me, racism is the underlying mode of thought of racial prejudice and discrimination. When you judge individuals, either in positive or negative ways, based on their race before getting to know them as a person and judging them as an individual, that's racist. Being highly prejudicial toward a racial group seems pretty much racist-by-definition to me.
EDIT: I'm not taking a position on whether or not West is racist. I neither know nor care enough to have an informed opinion on that. I'm just trying to understand the terminology being used.

My initial reaction was that first of all, who still watches the VMAs and second, this "scandal" is extremely inconsequential in the context of 2009. I didn't take West's reaction as a racist one (it's odd how some of you are convinced of that but we'll leave it alone) as much as in poor taste. You have to remember, this is the man who wants to be called "The New King of Pop"...he's an egoist who's talented but not so much as he thinks and prone to cheap provocation. (In terms of rappers, he doesn't even come close to the breeze of Jigga or the cool swagger of Missy.) Perhaps due to my more academic approach, I subscribe to a textbook definition of racism, so to speak. "Racism" is really a white phenomenon, since minorities lack the ability to socially, economically, legally, and politically disenfranchise the dominant majority whites based on a belief that they are inferior. Here are some definitions, courtesy of dictionary.com: Racism noun 1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. 2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination. 3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races. Thus, I highly doubt that the majority of blacks who are hostile towards whites are "racist" towards them. It's personal prejudice, perhaps based on their personal encounters with racism from whites, but it is not racism. Now, I am sure there are many blacks/minorities who do deem whites inferior, in which case yes, they would be racist. But I am just not quick to use that word in a situation like Kanye's, since I've never heard him explicitly state, or even allude to, the notion that he is superior to white people. |

In my opinion Beyonce's video was better because that dance is pretty complex and Lady Gaga was a good candidate too. It was very untactful of Kayne to run up on stage and be super awkward but more importantly be very disrespectful to Taylor Swift.

Incidents like this have a way of having a major silver lining at the end of the day. Taylor Swift probably won over lots of fans just by the way she handled the incident with class & grace, while Beyonce´ came off looking like a true class-act by stepping aside during her moment so that Taylor Swift could have hers. Hopefully, Kanye West lost fans but, sadly, what he will get is tons of publicity over this which is probably what he wanted in the first place.

I don't think it was staged . Kanye is just a big ass on a ego trip. Taylor looked really hurt and embarrassed so i don't think that do that to her without her knowing. Then the speech she gave after beyonce let her have a moment did sound genuine.
On the other had MTV could have done more to stop him because it wasn't the first time he's done something like that on a awards show. I think they just went with it like hey more publicity.
