    Eros Ramozotti is Italian.

There is also big confusion in US about Latin American people. Latin America is not Spain's dominion anymore, therefore Ricki Martin is Latin American, NOT SPANISH.

With the same weird logic English speaking Americans in USA should call themselves English or British. Do they? NO ! My Spanish friends from Spain got annoyed by the bizarre geographical distortion ! Believe me, they are adamant about it.

Those 2 handsome Mediterrenean men are great. They spent little more time in tanning salon. I know both of them they are way more lighter normally. They're hot with their tan. Some of the hottest & most handsome men on earth are found in Mediterrenean or its enclaves & extensions without any doubt.

If Ricky is Spanish, then the OP is either English or French.

No matter what his heritage, Ricky Martin is as hot as they come - - - even as he pushes closer to 40. With that said however, my taste buds lean toward hot black-Irish men - especially one particular hunk from Connecticut. Now HE is caliente!

trliber saidUnless a Hispanic individual was born in spain and/or a subject of the Spanish Crown then they can't be called "Spanish". All other Hispanics are identified by their country of origin as well (i.e. Shakira is Colombian, not Spanish).

That is interesting to bring up. Yes, Ricki Martin is Puerto Rican. The various groups of people descended from Spanish colonization usually distinguish themselves from each other and many do not like to be referred to as Spanish. It's a matter of national identity but also because some people tend to be mixed racially with perhaps indigenous people.

You may remember in the confirmation of Justice Sotomayor that National Council of La Raza came up. It's name stemmed from a work that described this process of a new people born from many others.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_RazaIn the United States, "La Raza" is sometimes used to denote people of Chicano (i.e. Mexican American) and Mexican descent, as well by Latin American mestizos who share Native American heritage. The term may or may not be inclusive of entirely European or African descended Hispanic peoples.

in his 1925 book, La Raza Cósmica, ("The Cosmic Race"), Mexican writer José Vasconcelos described La Raza Cosmica as the product of gradual racial mixing that was already underway in the Hispanic world. Vasconcelos believed that eventually all of the people within the Spanish Empire would be completely mixed into a new race.

I was just about to post about la raza cosmica! icon_wink.gif

Yeah, basically hispanics from the americas don't like to be called Spanish because they're actually a new "type" of Hispanic. Societies of mixed ethnicities: european, african, asian, indian, etc. This is why Hispanics form the americas aren't concerned at all with knowing their ethnic heritage. They just know they're say Colombian and Hispanic and that's all that matters to them.

Maybe that's true in other parts of the Americas -- but here in New Mexico, USA, many of those of "Spanish" descent (from the Empire days) definitely distinguish themselves from those of Mexican origins or mixed heritage (like Native American/Mexican/some Spanish...) and are quite adamant about it, even somewhat offended at being called anything else. Sense of superiority, some sort of "better" lineage being from Spain soldiers blood in the distant past? icon_rolleyes.gif

Kind of like , as one example, so many French people I've met over time who all seem to have been born in "Paris" and nowhere else in France. Hmmm. icon_wink.gif

Yes, good point and generally true. I guess northern New Mexico is the exception to every rule. Here the descendants of the original Spanish settlers still prefer the term Spanish. I live on an old land grant by the king of Spain somewhere between 1630 and 1680, though all the original documents were destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt.

Yes that is what I was talking about. Different segments of the former Spanish colonies like to distinguish themselves in some way. The Spanish vs. other Latin Americans seems to have elements of classism.

Of course the Chicano movement also included the notion of identity and accomplished much in civil rights.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicano_Movement.

Ironically, I don't know that discrimination of the past really distinguished between Spanish and Mexican for example ..
    nomexicans.jpg

And believe it or not there has actually been a lot of research into the nature of identity among Latin Americans ..

Don't mean to ramble on, I have just been studying this more as a part of my personal research in the past few years. icon_biggrin.gif

I shut up now. And yes Ricky Martin is sexy icon_lol.gif
