I won't post to THAT forum because...

I've had discussions recently with different member's here. It occurred to me that I've stopped posting to certain forums based on different reasons. I'm interested in knowing if others use similar discretion in their choices for posting comments.

    For me:
    Guy above/below you forums.
I don't post to these because they seem either geared towards insulting (what's wrong with the guy above you) because I don't believe in giving constructive criticism that's not requested. Secondly is those that are geared towards self gratification (what's the hottest thing about the guy above you) because while you may be sincere in your comments about the guy above you, you're also asking for compliment merely by posting.

    Political or religious forums.
Most of these are name calling fests. There are those whose ideologies are so rigid that they hear/read nothing that conflicts with their views. They don't consider alternate viewpoints, weaknesses in logic or even diversity of belief systems. They blindly follow the leader without questioning them and they won't have anyone else questioning that authority. You cannot have a discussion with someone who's not listening to you.
There are forums with civil and considered discussions that are occasionally co-opted by a few belligerent members.

Justifications for bigotry forums. This is obvious to those who see the bigotry (race, religion, sex, orientation, gender identity) but seems to be too obscure for the bigot who seems to start every idea with something on the order of: "I'm not a [bigot, racist, etc.], it's just that I...."

Questions about how to do/acquire illegal substances, commit crimes or perform highly unethical tasks. This should need no further explanations.

Forums about being 'holier than thou.' While this very post may seem to be of this type, I could not nor would not ever claim to be better than anyone on this site. I'll be glad to share my 'how I screwed up' stories to help someone else avoid the same pain, but I'm not a better person than someone else for having overcome them.

I'm not saying that these threads have no right to be here, I just choose not to join them for the above reasons. I will admit to having posted to some of these in the past and I learned my lesson.

I do find it funny when someone posts a response that's obviously intended as humor and the respondent misses the humor entirely.

    What do you think?

A forum is exactly that - a place for discussion.
I have taken quite a share of rap because of my Creationist beliefs in opposition to evolutionists.
I have more respect for members who respond than those who click the Ignore feature.
Let's be clear here. Bigcat's attitude as seen in his OP is one of sheer cowardice - and he is certainly not alone. There are some odd ones on this site, quacks included, who are shit-scared in tapping at their computer keyboard lest there is that chance their fingers just might get burnt.
True enough, I avoid the Guy Above You threads, because I think they are sheer crap. I prefer a proper discussion. But avoiding the risk of getting your fingers burnt...well then, why are you a member of Real Jock?

There are plenty of forums I still post in including the ones that I mentioned. I just don't post when it's nothing but a bunch of screaming fights between deaf opponents.

I still enjoy the good snarky remark every now and then. I'm starting to see some here already, but there's not enough momentum (or fodder) yet for a real snarkfest.

bgcat57, I am sure you have participated in a lot the same forums you complain about seeing that you have 1612 posts.
Don't worry newer guys will pick up the slack icon_wink.gif

Yeah, these are something of a turn-off. I read some and post to some, but you can avoid a lot of the nastiness if you just look at, for example, the various bodybuilding forums.

yeah to be honest, I tend to just scroll through the pages and skip all the "best thing...would you....blah blah blah stupid bullshit threads."

    i mean.....they've all been made.

do a fucking search, we don't need twenty threads asking if you'd kiss the guy above you.

I totally would by the way.

Totally agree with bgcat57. Life is too short to worry about things on line that are a waste of your time and positive energy. There used to be a lot more personal story sharing, and guys wouldn't get shouted down for it. I've come to the point that I don't bother with posts that are a negative drain on my person energy.

I've got somewhere around 1100 posts, but that's over 3+ years. There are also people on here that I don't bother responding to, because of the hubris they've shown. Nothing I would say would change their minds, so why bother? As a friend used to say "Don't bother trying to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig."

That's ridiculous. There's a big difference between feeling that certain forums are not worth your time/energy, and being a coward for not posting to them. He explained, in the original post on this thread, why he doesn't post in each type of forum he doesn't post in. None of those are examples of cowardice.

I don't post to forums much either, but mostly because my forum ignore list is 200+ and counting, so they are all a little disjointed.

But I still like to post on forums that are just pictures of cute kittens or puppies.

    ...

Usually I say something like, "personally, I think kittens and puppies are disgusting, and people should keep their animals to themselves. I come to RJ looking for a place to meet masculine manly man's men who are All Man. All these gays with their puppies and kittens are the reason we're not accepted by the rest of society. If everyone would just man up and kill their puppies and kittens, I'd be able to come out to my straight buds. But hey, whatever floats your boat, ya pansy asses."

    That kinda thing.

For an RJ member whose high intelligence I admire and posts I always read -
Ok, BioNerd, I take your point. I did go over the top there.
Not for nothing is my title "Krakatoa" on my profile. Emotion above reason...and all that...

A great deal of people on here are just one-minded and don't even consider having an open mind about things then in which turns the forum into a who can insult the other one better which I believe causes a lot of people not to even consider posting there opinion.

I will no longer post to anything political in nature. Apparently, I am not allowed to have an opinion even when I don't disrespect someone else's opinion. Now I just read them and laugh. I must admit it took me awhile to not get a little angry when i saw such closed minded, judgmental posts on here.

jprichva said This is like how Republicans in Congress behave.

It's also how Dems behave. Remember their former mantras: Dissent is Patriotic! Question Authority!
Not anymore. Nancy Pelosi finds dissent so vexing.

    It's simple.

Agree with me = smart, open minded. icon_biggrin.gif

Disagree with me = stupid, closed minded, idiot, sheep, etc. icon_rolleyes.gif
