Would you stop using condoms if there was a cure for HIV/AIDS?

I have often imagined that if and when there is a cure for HIV/AIDS, gay men would be swinging from the chandeliers, butt-naked, shouting "Hallelujah!!!... No more rubbers!!! Let's FUCK!!!" Of course, we would all be relieved and happy that HIV would finally be behind us---for gays and straights alike---but there would still be other annoying, incurable and even deadly STDS to be avoided. Straight men would still need to wear protection to avoid unwanted pregnancies aside from STDS while gay men could be a bit more liberal. Personally, I would still wear condoms. My thought is that unless I'm trying to make a baby, condoms will always be a part of my life whether there is a cure for HIV or not. As gay men, there's no concern of unwanted pregnancies, but there are still other sexually transmitted diseases and the issue of anal health.

So, if there was a cure for HIV---and only HIV---would you start barebacking?

I still have this thing I can't shake about getting smootz all over my dick. Even if a guy is completely clean and all, there is still the lube and whatever else that creates a groovy feeling I just don't like.

No! - There could always be another disease coming around.

Also, remember there is still Hepatitis - no cure for Hepatitis C.

You'd have to be a complete idiot not to use protection.

Among other things (like Hep-C) it can lead to urinary tract infections. Bad idea.

While a huge relief at that point not to worry about HIV/AIDS, there is still Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Hep A, B and C (No cure for C), and many other things to worry about. Also, as mentioned above, there is urinary tract infections too.

The side effects of most of those can be painful, some even deadly without proper treatment. Still some scary stuff out there.

Would I be more liberal? I would have to be honest and say yes. But still very mindful.

I would even because there isn't one. I'm one who's pretty retentive about getting myself and my lover tested ... that and I only would have sex again if I am deeply - but mutually - invested with one man. so, yes, I would bareback.

One piece of info that is currently suppressed is the affect of HIV drugs on the human body. It not like taking an aspirin .. Hiv drugs totally and permanently changes the chemistry of your body. Nobody knows what the long term affects really are.

Absolutely not. AIDS is just one STD. Just because there may be "a cure" is no reason to throw caution to the wind. Not wise behavior.

To be honest, I would probably bareback if I was in a monogamous relationship. However, there are other scary bugs out there that are more common and more contagious than HIV, and if not treated timeously may kill you quicker than HIV.

Mr Condom is a true friend: It may not be pleasant to have him around when we're horny and want to get off with a stranger, but he will prevent us from harming ourselves. So this is a no brainer - it is safer not to bareback. It feels good, but it can smell awful! Uuuugh!!! (Here I do like my portuguese grandmother and spit three times over my left shoulder to push that disgusting thought away...Amen!)

Considering I don't ask people to sneeze in my face because there may be a cure for the cold I certainly wouldn't stop using a condom. Like others have pointed out HIV/AIDS isn't the only reason to use a condom. icon_neutral.gif Big duh.

No, I would not. Why not use them? Are they really that much of an inconvenience?

I think this is the best answer here. Imagine how much less of an impact HIV/AIDS would have been had gay folk been using condoms before it hit. We are, however, a species of bounded rationality and could not have seen that one coming, nor can we necessarily see a future bug just as or more devastating coming. I'll continue to use condoms (though probably not freak out so much if I slip up) because of that reason.

Now, if the question were "will gays as a whole vastly reduce their condom usage" I think the obvious answer is going to be yes. Again, bounded rationality and all that.

Great topic...I think I would only if I was in a relationship with someone I trusted. After testings.

No... to many other things going around. Besides, in this day of HIV and AIDS, I'm more interested in being part of the solution.
