Jeremiah berry's father was very abusive, he was raped by his father and the boy killed him apparently the day his father told him that 'god had told him' that he should have a sex change to become his wife. This boy shot his father then cut him up and put the parts out for coyotes to eat. My god how long was this poor kid abused before he reached such a point? makes you wonder where was his mother, other family members, a neighbor, or anyone else for him to talk to that he could get some help from before it came this? He had a public defender take his case and did a plea deal so his prison sentence was reduced to 3 years in jail and extensive counseling for 10 years after. At first for his defense they plead insanity, but twice was found competent to stand trial, so then plead guilty to second degree murder. See article at Huffington Post jeremiah-raymond-berry-pl_n_301757.html Personally, I question the value of any prison sentence at all, being so abused a prison sentence could finish him off. A grusome crime indeed, but one he was undoubtably driven to since the human mind can only take so much before snapping. What do you think about a jail sentence in such cases?

Based on what I read in your post, I say no jail sentence. That kid needs counseling, not punishment.

And there probably are some people who had a clue as to what was going on with the father. But nobody gave a damn, so nobody did anything.

I know all about abusive parents (though mine weren't nearly this cracked)! This may sound extreme, but my sympathies are totally with the kid.

God bless this kid and this new set of obstacles he faces. His father was a deadbeat.

god said to bless this kid with a sex change so he could become his own stepmother. Not only did he go against god's will, but he also murdered and dismembered god's prophet.

What a horrible story and life for this kid. I would agree, based on the information presented, prison isn't required, but extensive counseling will be.
Its the kind of story leaves you wondering, "how" and "why"....

Oh, I remember this when it was a JT LeRoy anthology.

Oh snap! The main character in that book is also named Jeremiah.

    If you meant:

"his dad thought god said to bless this kid with a sex change so he could become his own stepmother. somewhere there are wackjobs who feel Not only did he go against god's will, but he also murdered and dismembered god's prophet."

I could agree with that amended version, though are some here on RJ who would agree with your original words, which rather confused me, not being able to read between your lines. Thank you for clarifying.

Well it wouldn't be the first time God has asked a profit to sacrifice his son.
