Why Chicago lost the Olympic vote

We wuz robbed. Chicago was quickly bounced out of the running for the 2016 Olympics. Here are our top 10 theories about why the International Olympic Committee members voted against the Windy City:

    10. Michael Jordan didn't come through with those free Air Jordans.

    9. Voters from goat-eating nations feared that Cubs Billy Goat jinx thing.

    8. Ticked off when Oprah kept moving through the Copenhagen buffet line too slowly.

    7. Knew that learning to samba would be easier than the Bears' Super Bowl Shuffle.

    6. Decided it was time to wipe that smug look off Bob Costas' face.

    5. Before he retires, wanted to inspire one more base-kicking tantrum from Lou Piniella.

    4. Several members once got stuck in an elevator with Mike Ditka, and they've never slept well since.

    3. Female voters were way jealous of how Michelle Obama makes that sleeveless look work.

    2. Compared Brazil's beaches to the Lake Michigan shoreline and could think of only one word: Topless!

And the No. 1 reason Chicago got hosed by IOC voters . . .

    1. Tired of hearing chants of "USA, USA" every time America wins another gold.

The real Number One Reason why Chicago didn't win the Olympic Games:

It's an unpleasant, crime ridden, corrupt armpit of a city, that shouldn't host a potato sack race.

Holding the Olympics there would only have disgraced the US before the whole world. I thought Obama was making a mistake by going to make a pitch before the IOC, but assumed he had inside knowledge beforehand that the US had a good chance. Instead, a serious misjudgment and misstep on his part.

This coming from a guy who's from one of those trashy, dumpy "Fort" cities in Florida. HA!

It is a corrupt city, yes, but get a perspective maybe? Chicago has more culture in a block than the entire fetid swamp that is Florida, save maybe Miami and one other place. Maybe.

I'm gonna have to say the reason they lost is because after you get past the pretty skyline on the lake, its a disgusting shell of a city that reminds me of how rent portrays the new york of the eighties

I think Rio deserves it more, plain and simple. Brazil is a developing country, just like China, who hosted the Olympics last year, and no South American city has ever been chosen to host the games. The US has already hosted two in the last 20 years. Give someone else a chance!

And for the record I've only ever heard nice things about Chicago and really want to visit someday. icon_smile.gif But I still think Rio was the better choice.

I think this thread is beginning to only show that snobby fruits who do little exploring outside of Boystown shouldn't be allowed in Chicago.

Go waste away your lives in some soulless, cookie-cutter resort town and leave us who live in a place of worth alone. Thanks.

Oh, and by the way: you're trashy.

Yeah, people can get a little bit Old Testament here at times. Whatever anyone says, I feel this is a fantastic city. I'm sure Rio deserved to win just as much as we did, but don't use the argument that it's because of Chicago's crime and corruption. Rio has all that and then some.icon_lol.gif

If crime and corruption were the IOC's deciding factor than Rio would'nt have won -- actually I doubt corruption has ever figured into to the IOC's calculations for awarding the games. Chicago's bid was week in the money and support department.

But really it's hard to compete with Rio in the looks department, and that like China that got 2008 there's a sense that Brazil has arrived on the international scene.

But then again this thread is from someone who's under the delusion that San Francisco should host the Olympics -- love the city, but logistically it's not cut out for it.

Have you ever been to a favela in Rio? The crime there blows Chicago out of the water! Watch Cidade de Deus (or City of God) (much of it was filmed in the favelas of Rio).

Here's a brief read to catch you up:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/olympics/09/19/rio.2016.crime.ap/index.html

Rio de Janeiro is beautiful, but it is definitely more dangerous than Chicago.

Obama didn't misstep. He made an effort to bring the Olympics to the US, because he knows it is a huge financial and political boon. Can't blame the guy for trying.

people seemed to be forgetting the disgrace caused by atlanta and salt lake in the eyes of the ioc. atlanta was considered a poorly run joke marred with violence, and salt lake was only chosen because of a series of underhanded bribes that were later exposed... the ioc has never really forgiven america for that.

    a) The Atlanta bombings are not the fault of the US (cough... Munich... cough)
    b) The IOC were the ones taking the bribes from Salt Lake

I'm sure it has more to do with giving other countries an equal opportunity. I wouldn't expect the US to host again for a few, if not several, more Olympics. It's just logical.

I can understand why Rio won. It's a beautiful city with great sporting facilities and is populated by beautiful Brazilians in speedos and bikinis! The other countries didn't stand a chance.

    Mmmm, Brazilians...

Okay, so Illinois sucks and Chicago is not the greatest place on earth....I however was disappointed that the city was not selected.

Never been to Rio de Janeiro, but it does appear quite beautiful.

    WHO CARES?

People grossly exaggerate the meaning of a city hosting the Olympics.

The reason is because the IOC is racist, don't you guys know by now that anyone who doesn't bow down to Pres Obama is a racist?

:::scratches head::: I am not sure where you are going with this since the IOC obviously did not "bow down to Pres Obama."

Do they really? So you argue the economic and political effect of hosting the Olympics is trite? Interesting. How exactly did you come to this conclusion?

LOL ... having lived there for many years I tend to agree with you
But that doesn't negate the things that Red said

The real reason that Chicago lost was that The IOC was swayed by the political issue that South America never hosted a game before
