Not sure if this was already mentioned on RJ, but the movie "Outrage" about outing gay politicians will be airing on HBO in October. Actually it already did on the 5th, but I missed any notice of it.

Next airing will be October 8, twice each that day on both HBOe and HBOw. Not sure about times and availability outside the US & Canada. Check local listings.

Here's also an unsympathetic review of the film from Newsweek. The author seems to gloss over the problem with closeted gay politicians who are anti-gay crusaders. He focuses mainly on the broader notion of politicians having a right to privacy, of gays having a right to remain closeted. Concepts I support, until a politician lies about being something he's not, while hypocritically working publicly against the very same thing he's doing in secret. Anyway, here's the review for consideration & comment:

    Saw it last night actually.
Very interesting stuff, though not necessarily that enlightening and I'm not sure that "outing" people, sells people on supporting your cause - though I understand the frustration/fight.

I saw it last night. He clearly says he's not into outing people it's just hypocrites. Anyone he outed was against gay marriage, gays in the military hiv/aids support, hate crime protection and gay adoption. All of which when having the opportunity to set new laws voted NO. I'm not into outing people either but when you use your seat to stagnate a group of people you ostracize and yet are a part of.....You need to be called OUT for it. Most of these men had Bf, Lovers etc. This program was AMAZING to me as it unfolded for 1 1/2 hrs.

I really wish I had HBO so I could see this.
Not like I NEEDED another reason to get mad at these hypocrites.
I'm never really big on retribution, but I have to admit that "outing" them against their will is almost fitting for the kind of hell they make for us.

It was CHILLING. You hear audio of Larry Craig's arrest. accusations of other men in Washington being accused of being gay and your heart goes out to them. Then, as you watch and see their voting record or speeches of exclusion then you want retribution and shame to defame them. Probably not the most healthy way to feel but it's mind boggling to watch and not come thru it somewhat upset and feeling cheated, That an elected official choose to at times demoralize people and participate in the activities he denounced

Very good film. Those of you in Florida should see it, especially with Charlie Crist running again, he is one of the biggest hypocrites of the film.

Thanks for the tip on the program - I'll have to check it out.

Personally I don't see much, if any, moral ambiguity. If someone is clearly anti-gay in their political philosophy & voting record and even speaks openly against gays, they're fair game. If they're progressive on gay rights then I think their right to privacy is maintained.

Hypocrisy is the grist mill of politics, and privacy rights only go so far in a public context. How many times have we seen pols get in trouble over things such as hiring illegals, no matter what their personal views on immigration might be?

To be sure the collateral damage can be huge in these cases and is somewhat regrettable. But that doesn't mean we should shrink away from the truth.
